Chapter 633, Section 47: Crispin Wayland
In Night City, 'cyber psychopath' is a title—you have to be qualified to deserve it.
Ordinary lunatics? Those are just pathetic worms with overloaded cybernetic bodies. Even if they smashed their own cerebral cortex, they would at best be walking self-destruct programs. Even gangsters could deal with these kinds of people more easily than clearing jammed cans from a vending machine.
A true cyberpsychopath? That would be a ruthless character capable of shutting down the entire neighborhood, either single-handedly wiping out a gang squad or turning a conversion clinic into a hybrid art installation of flesh and cybernetics—only a disaster of that magnitude would warrant the personal intervention of those cyber lunatics from the Terrorist Mobile Unit.
Of course, they often can't even last a single encounter with the terrorist mobile unit, but what if they face street mercenaries or gang thugs? That's like a meat grinder entering a slaughterhouse.
So when the young black man with short braids took down this "professional mental patient" before the terrorist squad arrived, he had already proven his ability by using the "cyber mental illness" as a stepping stone.
"This guy"
Oliver's gaze first swept over the twisted metallic body on the ground. The cyber-psychotic's six eyes resembled a folded circuit board, his spine exhibiting an unnatural right-angle curvature. Pinkish blood froth mixed with lubricant was gushing from the seams of his prosthetic spine—a typical symptom of a broken neural bridge.
He reflexively began a trauma assessment: the third lumbar vertebra was completely shattered, and at least three hydraulic joints were ruptured. To cause this kind of trauma...
"This requires dodging timing that is accurate to the millimeter level."
Within 0.3 seconds of the opponent's attack, he must complete a full set of movements: dodging, clenching his fingers into a cone shape, and pressing his entire body weight into his two finger bones—each step requiring precision like a machine and explosiveness like thunder.
Even more chilling was that, in Oliver's pupils, the orange catheter on the side of the black youth's arm still glowed with a steady pulsating fluorescence. This meant that the other party hadn't even activated the device that appeared to be connected to the prosthetic body, and had completed this death calculation solely with his original flesh.
This person's skills may be no less than his.
Or rather, in close combat, he might not be a match for him.
Oliver knew he couldn't deliver such a precise strike.
Oliver's skill level is definitely top-tier in Night City right now, and this young black man is at a similar level to Oliver.
When did Night City produce such a capable guy?
While Oliver was still wondering, Carl already knew who the young black man was.
This time, it wasn't through Mr. Johnson's account that Karl accessed the NCPD database, but rather because he had heard of this young man.
"He should be Crispin Wayland."
Carl's words dispelled all of Oliver's doubts.
"Chrispin Weyland, the former ace mercenary of our previous life, the one who specifically served Rogge. The legendary mercenary of the past, the son of Weyland the old snake?"
Who is Vespa? He was a mercenary on par with Morgan Blackhand in the past. In the mercenary world at that time, he, Morgan Blackhand, and Adam Hammer were considered the top three. It's not that other mercenaries weren't qualified, but compared to the three of them, they all seemed to be a bit lacking. Vespa's son, Chrispin Vespa, was quite famous.
Before Karl and his team became famous, Rogge, as the Queen of the Afterlife, naturally had an elite mercenary squad dedicated to serving her. Among them, Crispin Weyland was the star of the show. This young man, who worked as a mercenary like his deceased father, Weyland the Old Serpent, was rumored to be even more skilled than his father. However, despite his fame, Karl's team had never actually encountered him in the Afterlife. If today was indeed him, it would be their first time meeting him.
“I heard he’s been doing some work for Roger in Atlanta for the past two years, and I’ve never even met this awesome mercenary who was already famous before us. I never thought I’d actually meet him today, especially in a place like Twisted Street.” Oliver said with a touch of emotion.
Chrispin Wayland left Night City before Carl and his crew made a name for themselves, helping Roger with work in other parts of America. When he left, Carl hadn't come to Night City yet, Oliver was still hanging around in Santo Domingo, Jack was just an ordinary mercenary, and V was out there running goods in the Badlands. They just missed out.
The Terrorist SWAT team was clearly surprised by how quickly the situation was handled, but they still proceeded with the routine questioning. Carl walked over and waved to the young black man as he was being questioned. As the young man answered the Terrorist SWAT team's questions and looked over, Carl mouthed a question.
'Chrispin Whelan?'
The young Black man gave Carl a somewhat naive smile and nodded. As the Terrorist Mobile Unit stopped recording, he replied, "It's me. This is our first meeting, Carl." Then he looked at Oliver next to Carl and said, "Oliver."
There's a reason why the two groups could greet each other as soon as they met.
The elite mercenary circle at the Rebirth Bar is tiny; everyone at the top knows each other. Even if Chrispin Wayland disappeared for a while, they're still from the same boat, so greeting each other wouldn't be difficult.
Unless someone is a psychopath like Adam Hammer, it's always good to be friendly when you meet someone, especially given your relationship with Rogge. Wellan is an errand boy for the Queen of Night City, and Karl and his crew have a long-standing friendship with Rogge. They even occasionally work for the same employer. If they were to keep a straight face, it would seem unnecessary.
After the Terrorist Squad finished questioning Weyland, they started questioning the trembling passersby to verify the matter. Carl and Oliver moved closer and asked, "What happened? How did a cyber psychiatrist suddenly appear?"
Wei Lan didn't mind talking about it: "I was doing something for Roger and came to pick up some things from Wakako. When I went out, I ran into a guy who was probably obsessed with a celebrity. He thought he was the husband of some idol. This guy insisted that a passerby who bought the collaboration ultra-thin battery stole his 'wife' and then gave a literal account of that person. I happened to see it, so I called the Terrorist Response Unit and stopped him."
It was clear that Wei Lan had switched to Chinese to speak with Karl, perhaps because he was facing Karl, and Karl understood his personal account.
This really resonates with me.
"That really means you've run into an idiot."
Oliver nodded and looked at Wayne: "Nice to meet you. How about we grab a drink? My treat."
He always did this—inviting strangers he had just met for drinks as naturally as inviting an old friend to his own living room.
Faced with his enthusiasm, Wei Lan was clearly taken aback for a moment, but he did not hesitate for long.
“Next Life Bar,” he finally answered, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, “just in time to finish reporting to Roger.”
