Chapter 15: Choices and Decisions
Chapter 15: Choices and Decisions
"I will not take the initiative to sacrifice the people of that village." Sun Hang replied calmly.
"Why?" Yang Qi asked after staring at him for a few seconds.
"No reason." Sun Hang shook his head. "You only asked me to make a choice, but didn't let me explain the reason. I can only tell you what choice I would make in that situation."
"...Very good, congratulations, you have successfully passed the assessment." Yang Qi clapped her hands gently, "Now you are an official monster hunter."
"So, the standard answer to this question is to choose humanity?"
"That's right... As an infected person, hunters have the power to rival monsters, but they themselves will also become an extremely dangerous time bomb. The infection process of the weird virus has a 'threshold'. When your infection process is below the threshold, your dominant consciousness is still human, but when the infection process exceeds the threshold, you will be completely out of control... and even become a new weird." Yang Qi explained, "But this infection process is different from that of ordinary viruses. We have not yet figured out what kind of behavior will cause it to change. All we can do is to help hunters as much as possible and keep our 'humanity'."
"I think I understand." Sun Hang nodded. "You want to use the power of the infected, but you are also afraid that they will get out of control, so you came up with this testing process. But there is one thing I don't quite understand. How will you do it in actual operation?"
"Of course we have to sacrifice the people in that village and eliminate the monsters." Yang Qi said, "If the conditions are really that ideal, we won't hesitate at all."
"Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the test?"
"No, it's not contradictory. This kind of decision is left to the commanders in the rear, not the hunters on the front line." Yang Qi shook his head, "The commander can do whatever it takes to complete the mission, but the hunters can't.
"For hunters, maintaining their humanity and clear self-awareness is always the top priority. This choice of disregarding life will gradually dilute your self-awareness as a human being... If this continues, you will eventually go from being an opponent of the disaster to becoming the disaster itself," said Yang Qi.
Looking at Yang Qi's serious expression, Sun Hang felt calm inside.
There is actually no deeper reason why he chose "human nature", it is simply because this is the "correct answer".
Yang Qi's previous words could no longer be considered hints; they were blatant instructions, clearly intended to guide him to make that "rational" choice.
This means that the other option is most likely the correct option.
What's more, the risks of the two options are not equal.
If Sun Hang chose humanity, and Yang Qi told him that he made the wrong choice, he would at most be considered a weakling.
If he chose rationality and made the wrong choice, he would likely become a person with little humanity in the eyes of the other party, who could lose control and turn into a monster at any time.
The former will at most not be able to become a hunter, but will more or less have a glimmer of hope; and the latter will probably be "dealt with" by them immediately... "By the way, there is one thing I'm curious about." Sun Hang suddenly asked, "Regarding my amnesia, I only remember that my name is Sun Hang, and I don't remember anything else... But how did you know my name?"
Sun Hang clearly remembered that the first words he heard after waking up were from the nurse: "Mr. Sun, you are awake."
"Since you have become a ghost hunter, this thing can naturally be returned to you." Yang Qi said, taking out a plastic-sealed evidence bag from the pocket of his white coat. The label on the evidence bag had been torn off, and a necklace that seemed to be made of stainless steel lay quietly in the bag.
"This was found at the rescue site." Yang Qi said, "To be precise, it was hanging around your neck at that time."
Sun Hang took the bag, opened it, and poured out the necklace. The pendant under the chain was an oval metal plate, which was very similar in style to the identification cards used by the Xiazhou Federation soldiers.
But compared with the detailed information recorded on the military identification plate, this metal nameplate only has two Chinese characters etched with laser - "Sun Hang".
"We have investigated this sign. It does not belong to any military force in any region of the federation, nor does it belong to any organization or group with public registration information. We have also searched the name Sun Hang in the archives of the entire federation. There are many people with the same name, but there is no file that matches yours." Yang Qi said.
Sun Hang turned the nameplate around, then held it up to the light and looked at it from different angles...but no matter what observation methods he tried, he couldn't get more information.
This is just a simple piece of stainless steel, rolled into this shape using a lathe, and then his name is engraved on it...even the edge of the nameplate has not been polished smooth, and it feels very burred to the touch.
"Not only your name, we also entered your DNA data, facial features and other information into the archive, but there is still no such person." Yang Qi said, "Based on my judgment, before you lost your memory, you were most likely engaged in a gray job that was between legal and illegal."
"For example?" Sun Hang looked at her and asked.
"Private military contractors without legal business licenses...also known as mercenaries," said Yang Qi.
"A mercenary's dog tag shouldn't just have a name, it should at least have a blood type," Sun Hang said softly, "It's even possible that this isn't even my real name..."
"The name is just a nickname. You can call yourself Sun Hang or something else." Yang Qi said nonchalantly, "If you don't like this name, you can always change it to one you like... Oh, by the way, if you really want to change your name, it's best to tell me before noon tomorrow, so that I can use the new name when I create a new identity file for you."
"No need, let's go with Sun Hang." Sun Hang said, "Come to think of it, can't we trace its origin through the manufacturing process of the nameplate?"
"We have tried every method you can think of." Yang Qi sighed, "Rather than relying on such a small piece of metal to figure out my past, it is better to hope to restore my memory."
"Okay, let's not talk about this for now." Sun Hang put on the gray uniform jacket issued to temporary investigators and stuffed the metal nameplate into his pocket. "Regarding my debt, the scope of work and salary of a Trickster Hunter, I think it's time to talk about it."
