Chapter 1 Strange Ceiling
Chapter 1 Strange Ceiling
In the darkness, the smell of disinfectant penetrated into his nasal cavity. Stimulated by the smell, the corners of Sun Hang's eyes twitched twice, and he slowly opened his eyes.
The first thing that catches your eye is a rectangular ceiling lamp. The pale, cold-toned light is lifeless, but fortunately, the frosted glass cover makes the light less glaring.
"Where...is...this place? I..." Sun Hang tried to recall what happened before he lost consciousness, but a tingling sensation deep in his brain immediately made him give up thinking.
"Mr. Sun, are you awake?" A young female voice sounded beside him. Sun Hang turned his head and found a young nurse in a pink uniform with a clipboard in her arms. "I have good news for you. Your operation was successful."
Surgery? Successful?
Sun Hang was stunned for a moment, and his right hand under the quilt moved subconsciously between his legs.
Fortunately, everything that should be there is still there.
"Why... am I here? What's wrong with me? What... surgery?" He said with some difficulty, his tone was extremely rough and hoarse, sounding like a man in his fifties or sixties.
Sun Hang realized that he could not remember anything except his name.
"Short-term amnesia is a very normal sequelae. After all, the brain has suffered severe damage." Another male voice came from behind. Sun Hang turned his head to the other side - it was a doctor in a white coat, with a mask covering most of his face, and a pair of large black-framed glasses covering the other half.
"Serious...injury? What...happened to me?"
"In the recent attack by a strange creature, a stray bullet hit your head," said the male doctor. "Luckily, the hard skull deflected the bullet and did not cause a fatal injury. Now the bullet has been removed and you are out of danger. You just need to rest and recuperate. As for the amnesia, it is only temporary. After a period of rest, you will gradually recover your memory."
"A strange creature attack? A stray bullet?" The amount of information contained in the male doctor's brief words could be described as "explosive". Sun Hang only felt that his head seemed to hurt even more.
"Change the dressing for the first time after 48 hours. Always pay attention to possible complications after surgery." The male doctor did not continue to answer Sun Hang's question. Instead, he looked up and said to the nurse across the bed, "If any abnormality is found in the vital signs data, notify the doctor on duty immediately."
"Okay, Director." The female nurse nodded.
The two men left quickly, leaving Sun Hang alone lying on the hospital bed, continuing to stare blankly at the ceiling lamp.
For some reason, Sun Hang always felt that the pale light seemed a little too cold.
"It would be nice if it was a warm light," he thought.
Suddenly, the pale cold light turned into a warm yellow light, and then all the lights in the ward flickered violently. The next second, all the lights disappeared, leaving only the emergency light sign at the base of the wall still emitting a faint green fluorescence.
"What's going on? Did the power trip?" The nurse's voice came from the corridor outside the ward... It seemed that not only the ward where Sun Hang was located was affected, the corridor outside also became pitch black.
"I don't know. The nurses' station has already called the electrician." another nurse replied.
At the same time, Sun Hang, lying on the hospital bed, was in deep shock and doubt.
Was the change in light and the power outage due to the thought that just popped into my head, or was it just a coincidence?
But just when Sun Hang wanted to think carefully, the pain deep in his brain once again defeated his will. He lay on his back on the hospital bed, staring blankly at the dark ceiling, breathing heavily.
If the power hadn't been cut off, the alarm of the machine next to the bed used to monitor Sun Hang's heart rate and blood pressure would probably have been ringing non-stop.
"What's going on… What on earth is going on…" Sun Hang's chest was heaving violently. He tried to sit up in bed, but his limbs began to twitch uncontrollably.
His eyes widened and he subconsciously wanted to open his mouth to call for help, but his throat seemed to be strangled by someone and he couldn't make a sound.
The suffocating feeling like drowning dragged his consciousness into the abyss bit by bit. Just when Sun Hang thought he was about to fall into a coma again, all the abnormalities suddenly disappeared, his racing heart rate gradually calmed down, and the control of his body returned to his hands again. "Snap."
The lights came on, and everything in the ward returned to normal. As the medical cart passed by the ward door, Sun Hang could vaguely hear the sound of the rubber wheels rubbing against the ground, the sound of the ampoules and plastic holders knocking against each other, and the nurses' whispered complaints about the sudden power outage.
Amidst these subtle and noisy noises, the crisp sound of high-heeled shoes hitting the ground came in. The sound got closer and closer, and finally stopped in front of Sun Hang's ward door.
The owner of the high heels pushed open the door and walked in.
"Hello, Mr. Sun." This was a tall woman wearing a black suit and black trousers. Her white shirt was buttoned up to the top button. There was no expression on her delicately made-up face.
"I'm sorry to disturb you when you need rest the most, but there are some things I must communicate with you in time." She pulled a stool from the side and sat down next to the bed.
"Who are you...?" Sun Hang asked subconsciously. His eyes glanced at the other person's left chest, where there was a bronze badge symbolizing the identity of a civil servant.
Although Sun Hang lost his memory, these common sense things were not erased from his mind.
"I'm the staff member responsible for handling the aftermath of the monster attack." The other party said, "In this attack, the entire block was reduced to ruins. The number of casualties exceeded one hundred. Including you, there are only six survivors."
Sun Hang didn't say anything, just waited quietly for the other party to continue.
"Out of humanitarian spirit, we immediately rescued the survivors including you, and paid all the expenses..." The other party paused, and then continued, "However, apart from your name, we did not find anything at the scene that could prove your identity, and your DNA information could not be found in the citizen database. There is no tax record, no insurance payment record, and no work record..."
"I have lost my memory..." Sun Hang frowned slightly. He had already heard a hint of hidden meaning in the other party's words.
Things are not going well.
"I know you have lost your memory, but no matter what, based on the information we have now, we can only temporarily classify you as an undocumented person or a refugee who has smuggled in from another city-state." The other party said indifferently, "This state has no obligation to provide you with free assistance services. All expenses, including the surgery fee, will be charged to your name in the form of debt."
This guy seemed to be here to settle the score with me.
Sun Hang took a deep breath and asked, "How much do I owe you?"
"As of now, the total is $3,890,627."
"So much?" Sun Hang frowned slightly. He remembered very clearly the purchasing power of currency in this era - for ordinary people, one million is definitely a huge sum of money, and with his current penniless state, it is almost impossible to repay this debt.
Unless he was a rich second generation before he lost his memory.
"Because you don't have citizenship and medical insurance, all fees are charged in full without any reduction or exemption." The other party's words were cold and emotionless. "Every bullet, every drop of gasoline, and every scalpel blade consumed to save you must be borne by you in full."
"Then...what if I can't pay back the money?" Sun Hang narrowed his eyes.
He definitely cannot pay off the nearly four million debt now... He doesn't have the money, and he doesn't want to give his life either.
"This is the main purpose of my trip." The other party took out a tablet from the briefcase he carried with him. "As long as you sign this employment contract and work to pay off your debts, after completing a certain number of work tasks, this state can forgive all your debts and the interest generated by the debts, and at the same time grant you a legal citizenship."
"Indenture?" Sun Hang was stunned for a moment and blurted out subconsciously.
