Chapter 571 Audience: Hiss, is Hannibal really going to eat people?
On the big screen, Clarice asks her boss about the identity of the person she is going to meet.
"who's that person?"
"The psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, you can also call him..."
The boss stared intently at Clarisse, his gaze unreadable, and said, enunciating each word clearly:
"Hannibal, the cannibalistic maniac!"
"hiss--"
Seeing their boss say it in a serious and solemn tone, as if it were the name of Satan, many viewers couldn't help but gasp slightly.
A cruel, ruthless, and terrifying impression was instantly etched into everyone's minds.
Many people immediately realized that Hannibal was a more terrifying figure than Buffalo Bill.
But they didn't know that Hannibal was far more terrifying than they imagined, but simply describing him as terrifying would be an oversimplification.
Then Mads Mikkelsen's appearance shocked everyone even more!
In the movie "The Silence of the Lambs," the most talked-about character is undoubtedly Hannibal Lecter.
Before his official appearance, the audience already had a basic understanding of this character from the words of many other characters in the film.
The impressions of his cannibalism, bloodshed, cold-bloodedness, and strangely elegant violence are gradually formed in the minds of the visitor Clarice and the audience through the dialogue in the first five minutes of the film.
These words were even repeated, but from different speakers, constantly reinforcing this impression.
For example, when these warnings came from Clarice's boss, they were full of affection and concern for Clarice, but as we see later in the text, the boss still had reservations about Clarice's purpose in visiting Hannibal.
When spoken by Warden Chilton, it was full of provocation, even a bit pretentious, showing pride in imprisoning Hannibal.
When spoken by prison guard Barney, the message was one of pure protection and a reminder.
The three characters' words not only shaped their individual personalities but also deepened Clarice's pivotal symbolic role in the film.
Furthermore, through layers of escalating build-up, the suspense surrounding Hannibal's upcoming appearance is amplified.
From the serious and even fearful attitude of others, the audience has realized that Hannibal's character is not simple, and at the same time, they have become extremely curious about this character.
What kind of person is he?
But before getting an answer, Takeshi Ono launched another round of speculation.
Before finally meeting Hannibal, Clarice has to pass through the cells of other death row inmates.
As Clarice moved slowly and followed her gaze, the audience saw three other death row inmates.
The first condemned prisoner gripped the bars tightly, his eyes fixed greedily on Clarice, as if he wanted to devour her alive!
The second death row inmate sat quietly in the shadows of his cell, looking sinister and dangerous.
The third death row inmate had disheveled hair and was jumping around in his cell, spewing foul language.
The first three cells were dark and filthy, and the three prisoners looked like vicious and ruthless villains.
But things were completely different when Hannibal was in his cell:
The lighting was bright and soft, without any darkness, and the iron railings were gone, replaced by thickened glass, making it look like a display case.
The camera then followed Clarice's gaze, and the audience, along with her, finally saw the legendary man—with neatly combed hair, wearing clean and tidy prison clothes (more like pajamas), standing straight in the center of the cell, elegant in demeanor, with a smile on his face, without the slightest hint of ferocity.
He looked at the camera slowly approaching her—Clarice's eyes, and also the eyes of the audience.
When the camera stopped rolling, he said softly, "Good morning."
The sky was clear and the breeze gentle, yet it was full of elegance.
Everything was contrary to the audience's preconceived expectations.
They did not see a ferocious and terrifying demon, but rather an elegant and civilized man, seemingly a gentleman.
However, the previous descriptions of him were so real and the evidence so conclusive that this extreme contrast inevitably sends chills down one's spine.
Like Clarice, the audience held their breath, on tenterhooks, fearing that Hannibal might pounce on them at any moment.
This contrasting treatment, ironically, prompts the audience to frighten themselves with their own imaginations.
The use of glass not only solved the problem of iron railings obscuring the actors' faces, but also added two effects:
Compared to the old iron bars, the fully enclosed glass is more like a solid cage without any gaps, highlighting Hannibal's greater terror than other prisoners, as if only by locking him up in this way could one feel at ease.
Another effect is that it allows Clarice and Hannibal to get close enough to feel like they can touch each other, thus establishing a smooth channel for subsequent conversations that touch on Clarice's darker psychological areas.
This contrasting and progressively unfolding filming technique allowed Hannibal to immediately captivate Clarice and, in turn, most of the audience.
However, after regaining their senses, many viewers couldn't help but feel a lingering doubt:
This legendary cannibal doesn't seem as terrifying as I imagined...
All the preceding build-up has made Hannibal seem extremely terrifying. But could someone who looks like a learned scholar really be such a terrifying person?
But the next moment, everyone had no more doubts!
The moment the camera panned to Hannibal's face, his gaze was instantly conveyed through the lens to the audience outside the screen.
Instantly, their eyes met.
But that one glance sent a shiver down everyone's spine!
What kind of look is this?
The extreme indifference contains an indescribable fervor; the calm rationality, like that of a frozen lake, also reveals a hint of unconcealable madness!
The contradictory emotions were perfectly blended together, resulting in Hannibal stunning everyone with just a single glance!
In the eyes of the audience, Hannibal is not like a brutal killer, but at the same time he is more terrifying than other murderers.
That calm yet insane gaze seemed to be telling everyone that this was the most ferocious, the most terrifying, and even more horrifying than other criminals—a cannibalistic maniac!
The audience even had a strong sense of disorientation, as if they were prey being targeted by a wild beast, about to be torn apart and devoured!
This sent a chill down many people's spines, making them involuntarily shudder.
Hiss—this guy…is he really going to eat people?!
From the moment he appeared, Hannibal exuded a terrifyingly powerful aura of oppression!
This is a charismatic character that has made history in film.
Hannibal!
……
"Hiss—Gin's acting is actually this good?"
In the audience, when they saw Gin's character finally appear, the members of the Distillery, who had been relaxed and expectant, couldn't help but feel a tightness in their chests the moment Hannibal appeared.
Unable to resist the urge to laugh, he inwardly exclaimed in surprise!
