Back to the 70s: My Wife is Both Fierce and Crazy
Chapter 8 Treasure Hunt
Chapter 8 Treasure Hunt
Lying in bed, Bai Jing pondered where to go tomorrow.
"Mom, can I skip work tomorrow?" She now has a system, and if possible, she wants to figure out how it works as soon as possible so that she can plan for the future.
There's some money in the system, enough to improve things at home, and I need to make sure my mother gets better.
"Why?" The eldest daughter had always been very sensible and never shirked her responsibilities. It was rare to hear her say that she didn't want to work. "The work of guarding the fields is not heavy, and I don't have to guard them all the time. There are also three work points." But she was reluctant to give up those work points.
“Mother, I want to go into the mountains again tomorrow. This afternoon I brought back twenty or thirty catties of grain. I want to go look for more, so that our family won’t go hungry.”
With the system at her fingertips, she didn't want to waste her time in the village. If given the chance, she wanted to take her mother, younger brother, and sister-in-law away from this heartless village.
This place is really driving their family crazy.
Luo Chunhua didn't want to force her daughter. "Well, I'll ask the team leader for leave tomorrow. If you don't want to go, then you don't have to. But I heard that the paper mill in town is hiring in another half month. Do you want to give it a try?"
She didn't find out the news herself; she heard it from the village accountant's wife while she was at work.
"Job recruitment?" She didn't remember such a thing. "Mom, who told you this?" Their village was Baijia Village under Fumin Commune, and above the commune was a town, and above that town was another town.
To get to the town, she had to go to the commune to catch a bus, which would take at least an hour. Her mother couldn't possibly find out about something that was so far away.
"Mother heard it from the accountant's wife. She heard that her son got inside information and he's sure to pass the exam this time." Luo Chunhua was envious. Only people like him could pass the exam, right?
After pondering for a while, Bai Jing asked, "Mother, do you want me to take the job recruitment exam?" If her mother wanted her to go, she would go.
She wasn't afraid of exams; at worst, she could just review her books at home these few days. With her years of experience, humanities exams were still a piece of cake for her.
"If we could go, Mother would love to, but we don't have any money. It costs six mao to take the bus to town and back, and we need food coupons for meals, which we don't have."
Thinking of all this, Luo Chunhua's hopes were extinguished.
"Forget it, let's wait until the commune recruits again. I'm going to sleep. If you don't want to go to work tomorrow, then don't. It's better to rest at home for a few more days. Don't go into the deep mountains."
After saying that, Luo Chunhua turned her back and went to sleep.
Bai Jing, whose mind was stirred up by her mother, suddenly couldn't fall asleep.
Do you want to take the exam?
Of course she does.
If she really passed the exam, she wanted to give the job to her mother so that they could leave the village. Her mother's health was too poor, and she couldn't handle such heavy farm work.
Her father is not currently on her mind; at least not until her grandfather dies.
She did want her father's love, but she wouldn't let her mother suffer.
As long as her mother leaves the village, she can gradually bring her younger siblings to the town. With the system at her disposal, she's confident she can do it.
Bai Jing thought for a long, long time before finally falling asleep.
When she woke up the next day, no one was home again.
Seeing the breakfast that had been kept warm for her in the pot, Bai Jing felt a warmth in her heart. Her younger brother and sister-in-law were still sensible and caring towards their older sister.
After breakfast, Bai Jing didn't waste any time and immediately spent fifty yuan to start collecting unclaimed food.
Because she didn't have a watch and didn't know the time, she could only ask the system. Fortunately, the system wasn't too unscrupulous and told her that time would cost money. So around 10 o'clock, she spent another 20 yuan to buy the whereabouts of the pheasant. Then she carried the grain and the pheasant down the mountain and went home.
The mountain behind her house was quite large; at least in her memory, she hadn't climbed the entire mountain. As soon as she got home, she cleaned the pheasant. Since everyone in the family was lacking in oil and fat, she stewed the pheasant to nourish them.
Because she had enough grain, she didn't skimp on herself and cooked a pot of bean rice. It contained all kinds of beans, including soybeans, red beans, and mung beans, along with rice she had ground herself. It was quite fragrant.
When Luo Chunhua returned, she smelled the fragrance from yesterday again. She thought to herself, "Jing'er must have caught some wild chickens again."
They quickened their pace as they entered the kitchen.
When she saw the bowl of chicken soup on the small table, she knew that Jing'er had caught another pheasant.
"How did you catch this pheasant today?" she asked, not out of any particular reason, but out of curiosity.
"Mom, you're back! Come wash up and come eat. I caught this pheasant today by setting a trap. I just wanted to try it out, but when I came back from getting grain, I found that two pheasants had fallen into the well."
Bai Jing pointed to a pheasant that hadn't been cooked yet and smiled as she asked her mother for a reward.
Luo Chunhua looked at it and was very happy. "Keep an eye on things while you're cooking. I'll have your fourth uncle watch over the fields on the back hill today."
There's a road right next to my house leading to the fields in the mountains. If he smells it, I'm afraid this meat won't survive.
"Don't worry, Mom. I've kept it sealed. I only took it out because I knew you were coming back soon. There's still one left. We'll eat it all at noon."
Bai Jing naturally understood her mother's worries.
She wouldn't do something so stupid, but she felt that hiding like this wasn't a solution, and that she should leave the village if she had the chance.
After washing her hands and brushing off the dirt, Luo Chunhua asked, "You made some hard rice again? Did you collect a lot this morning?" She lifted the lid and was pleasantly surprised to see the rice and beans inside.
Bai Jing didn't want to hide it from her mother, "Yes, quite a lot. We'll take my second sister and the others with us when they're on vacation. Our family will be able to eat our fill this month."
Her third sister's question about what it feels like to have a full meal makes her feel sad whenever she thinks about it.
In the past, Luo Chunhua would definitely not have agreed, since the child could earn two or three work points a day no matter what, but Jing'er clearly gained more, so she could distinguish between what was important and what was not.
"Your sister's school will be out for break in two days. You can take them with you then."
With her mother's words, Bai Jing felt even more confident about stockpiling grain.
In the afternoon, Bai Jing did not go into the mountains again. She had spent a lot of money today and needed to earn some back. She couldn't make a good living by relying on her meager savings.
After learning that the system could help her detect items that could be recharged within a one-meter radius, she got the idea.
It just so happens that the place is far from the village, so no one will suspect anything if I go there. Even if someone sees me, they won't think much of it. After all, everyone knows how rich the old landlord was before, and who wouldn't want to find some treasure?
If she goes, she'll just be seen as a crazy person who wants to get rich. The old landlord's family has already been fleeced three times over; even if there's something there, it won't be her turn.
No sooner said than done, Bai Jing packed her things and went out with her basket on her back.
She didn't take the route the team used, but instead used the canal on the mountain to bypass them.
When they arrived, they didn't see a single person, or even a ghost. The house was completely destroyed, drafty, and truly desolate.
Not daring to waste too much time, she headed towards the main house.
