Chapter 31 Uncle's Friend
"Third Uncle, is that person reliable?" Bai Jing had never done this before, so she was somewhat worried.

If it were just her alone, she could sell it through the system, but not now. The meat is now openly available. If she were to actually sell it to the system, it would scare them to death.

“He’s reliable. I used to trade with him for some grain when we were short of food at home.” Uncle Bai felt a lump in his throat as he thought back to the past.

Father's life was so good, yet he still made his three brothers suffer.

"Third Uncle, he's not from the black market, is he?" Bai Jing hadn't experienced it herself, but she had heard of it.

The black market is no good place. They have so much meat but only two people. If one of them is not careful, they might end up being ripped off instead of making a sale.

She never believed in the inherent goodness of human nature; after experiencing the harsh realities of society, she firmly believed that only the inherently evil nature of human beings exists.

Uncle San didn't refute Xiao Jing's words, but nodded, "Yes, but don't worry, Xiao Jing, Uncle San saved him. He's not the kind of person who has no conscience."

He knew what Xiaojing was worried about, but he trusted his friend.

After all, they were willing to help me when I was so poor before, so they are naturally happy to sell me good things now.

He wasn't really worried about safety.

"If what you're worried about really happens, Xiaojing, don't worry about your third uncle, just run first, and we won't take the meat." If he manages to escape, he'll return it to his sister-in-law later.

Hearing her third uncle's words, Bai Jing felt a little unhappy. "Third Uncle, what nonsense are you talking about? How could I possibly abandon you?" Even if something really happened, she wasn't afraid; she had the system.

"Third Uncle, don't forget, your niece is very strong. Not to mention two people, even if there are two more, I won't be afraid."

She wasn't lying; her strength could break all laws.

Uncle Bai was comforted by her, "It's true, I forgot about how strong you are." After saying that, he laughed.

Because they were carrying baskets on their backs, the two of them were a little out of breath while walking. Bai Jing was better, after all, she was 300 pounds strong.

"It seems Uncle San needs to eat more in the future, so he can gain some strength." Uncle Bai was very envious.

Bai Jing smiled; she would never admit that her strength wasn't something she gained through diet.

"Then keep going, Uncle. Things will get better in the future."

With their third uncle leading the way, it was still dark when they arrived at the commune.

I knocked on my friend's door and heard a male voice from inside, "Who is it?" Footsteps followed the voice.

"Who is it?" It was too dark, and fearing something might happen, the person inside asked again.

"It's me." Uncle Bai lowered his voice intentionally so that the neighbors living nearby couldn't hear him.

On the other side of the door, upon hearing the familiar voice, the man immediately removed the latch. As soon as the door opened, he saw his savior outside.

"Why did you come at this time? Is there not enough food at home again?"

Upon seeing the person who had arrived, Zhong Qiming immediately stepped aside, saying, "Come inside quickly."

Bai Quanshou didn't stand on ceremony with him and pulled Bai Jing into the courtyard.

Zhong Qiming, who was closing the door, noticed that there was another person, but he didn't ask and quickly closed the door.

Once they reached the house and the kerosene lamp was lit, Zhong Qiming finally spoke, "Has something happened?" he asked with concern.

Bai Quanshou glanced at his niece, and seeing her nod, he took off his basket.

“I encountered a wild boar on the mountain yesterday. There was a lot of meat, and we couldn’t finish it all at home. We were also short of food, so I thought I’d take it out and exchange it for something to take back home.”

After saying that, he revealed the meat from his basket. The white pork was immediately visible to Zhong Qiming, and without caring about brotherhood, he went straight over to check it out.

After examining the meat for a while, he finally calmed his excited heart and asked with trembling hands, "This is wild boar meat. Are you alright? Are you hurt?"

What Bai Jing didn't expect was that her third uncle's friend's first concern wasn't the meat, but her third uncle himself, which showed that the friend her third uncle was talking about was a good person.

My guard loosened a little.

"I'm fine, don't pull me, I'm tired." Uncle Bai was being pulled by his friend, but he immediately stopped him. "Quickly check the meat, it's so hot today, don't let it spoil."

Seeing his solid tone, Zhong Qiming believed him. "It won't break. I'll sell it in a bit. But you'll have to wait for me here, or come with me to Wang Fei's place." It's good that he wasn't injured.

Uncle San once again turned his gaze to Bai Jing, wanting to ask for her opinion. This action of his was naturally seen by Zhong Qiming.

"Who is this?" He looked at Bai Jing curiously. His benefactor had two sons and no daughters. This little girl's features resembled his benefactor's, so he was unsure.

"This is my niece, my own daughter, from my eldest brother's family." When his friend asked about his niece, Uncle Bai immediately introduced her with pride, his tone carrying a hint of boasting.

"She's the one who killed this wild boar. If you don't believe me, look at this boar's head." As he spoke, he went to his basket and rummaged through the wild boar's head, whose skull had been smashed.

He pulled out the pig's head and said, "Don't say your brother didn't think of you when he got something good. Look, this is the gift I brought for you." After pulling out the pig's head, Uncle Bai began to show it to Zhong Qiming.

However, his words startled Zhong Qiming.

"Give it to me?" He looked surprised, then immediately shook his head. "No, no way, this is all meat, I can't take it." His terms were much better than Brother Bai's, he absolutely couldn't take his things.

"Hey, take it. We killed three in total, two big ones and one small one. We kept the small one for ourselves, and that's why we came to you with the two big ones. You have connections, so help me think of a way."

Bai Jing listened quietly to their conversation and discussion without offering a single opinion.

However, her heart still trembled slightly when she heard the price.

If she remembers correctly, back then, meat was only 70 cents a pound if you bought it with ration coupons, right?

But why did Uncle San's friend only offer a price of one dollar and three cents, almost double the original price?
It's also Bai Jing's fault for being ignorant; these days, although pork wasn't expensive, you needed ration coupons.

Furthermore, even if you have a ticket, you can't just buy this meat whenever you want.

It was a bit better in the commune; at least the people there could eat meat once a month. But in towns and county seats, meat was incredibly hard to come by.

Even on the black market, the price is outrageously high, and you can hardly buy it even if you have the money.

"One dollar and thirty cents? Are you kidding me? That's so expensive!" Uncle Bai looked pained as he thought about all the meat his family had eaten.

He had never bought meat outside before and didn't know the price.

If he had money, he would rather buy more grain and keep it at home, so that his family wouldn't go hungry.

“No mistake, this price isn’t high, but it’s not low either. At least it’s only worth this much here in our commune. If you take it to the town, the price will be even higher.” Zhong Qiming wasn’t lying; he was telling the truth.
