Chapter 106 Stepmother
Bai Jing pouted, waved her little hand twice, and then followed him inside.

Her subtle actions naturally didn't escape Jiang Chen's notice. Where Bai Jing couldn't see, he curled the corners of his mouth, indicating that he was in a good mood.

After leading her to a table and sitting her down, Jiang Chen pointed to the restaurant's blackboard and said, "Take a look and see what you'd like to eat, I'll go order."

Bai Jing didn't stand on ceremony with him. She looked at the blackboard and saw two dishes she liked, so she immediately said them.

She had absolutely no sense of restraint.

But the more she acted this way, the more Jiang Chen was attracted by her generosity. His eyes darkened, and he stood up and said, "Okay, I'll go order."

The restaurant wasn't too busy at this time, since there was still some time before mealtime.

After ordering and paying, Jiang Chen quickly sat down opposite Bai Jing.

"It may be a bit shabby, but I'll say it again: you can come to me if you need anything." This time, he handed her the same address and phone number from that morning.

Bai Jing gained confidence and became even more determined in her heart; she wanted to pursue him.

Unlike in the morning, this time she readily accepted it, saying "Okay" with a smile, and then put the note he gave her into her cloth bag.

Seeing her like this, the frost on Jiang Chen's face melted away, and a slight smile appeared.

"Comrade Jiang, did you come to town this time just to thank me?" If she remembered correctly, his maternal grandparents had already passed away.

He never went home after that, but it was because of himself that he returned to his hometown.

"Yes." He agreed without hesitation, "But take this opportunity to visit the old man."

She knew that the old man referred to his deceased maternal grandparents and his mother.

She didn't know much, but she had heard some things about his family from him.

His mother died young due to complications during childbirth, and he was raised by his maternal grandparents.

His father remarried when he was five years old, and their relationship was not close.

Because of his stepmother, his father became even more of an enemy of him. After all, Jiang Chen's maternal family was no ordinary family; they were not exactly wealthy, but they certainly had a considerable fortune.

Because of these things, Jiang Chen became a thorn in the side of everyone in his family.

He didn't go back often when his maternal grandparents were alive, let alone after they passed away, he went back even less frequently.

Even so, his family still kept an eye on him and plotted against him.

Thinking about everything he had said, her heart ached. After all, this man had caught her eye and captured her heart, so she considered him her own and felt sorry for him.

"Oh." For a moment, she didn't know how to comfort him, after all, all the family members he acknowledged were gone.

Seeing that she didn't ask any more questions, Jiang Chen felt relieved. He wasn't very willing to talk about family matters with others.

Their meal was served quickly.

The two enjoyed their meal, and Bai Jing intentionally or unintentionally brought up various topics, resulting in a harmonious relationship between them.

In the midst of this beautiful atmosphere, a sharp voice rang in their ears.

"Jiang Chen, what are you doing here?"

Bai Jing was startled by the sound. Looking up, she saw a woman with sunken cheeks and tall, prominent features standing in front of their table.

The woman, around fifty years old, possessed a subtle, almost imperceptible cunning in her face. Her eyes were long and deep-set, often flashing with a sharp light that seemed to pierce through to the heart. The corners of her eyes were slightly upturned, revealing a natural arrogance. Her thick eyebrows pressed down, like two sharp swords laid across her face, adding to her air of authority and coldness.

Her nose was straight and sharp, with slightly upturned nostrils, giving her a mean-spirited appearance. Her lips were taut, and there was often a subtle hint of sarcasm at the corners of her mouth.

Whenever she speaks, the muscles around her lips seem to be tense, as if afraid that others will not hear the sarcasm in her words.

Although her skin showed signs of aging, her eyes looked around as if she were full of criticism and dissatisfaction with everything around her.

Looking around, she seemed to have a lot of dissatisfaction with Jiang Chen's presence, scrutinizing everything with her sharp and sarcastic gaze.

The stepmother's face was as ugly as the faded curtains.

Her gaze was fixed on the scene before her: her stepson was sitting at a table eating with a woman she had never seen before.

An indescribable anger and disappointment welled up in the stepmother's heart.

She disliked this woman. Even if Jiang Chen were to marry, it should be her niece from her maternal family. When did it become anyone else's turn? When she met Bai Jing's gaze, disgust flashed in her eyes.

"Xiao Chen, who is she?" The stepmother's lips twitched a few times, her hands clenched into fists, her fingertips turning white.

She suppressed her anger and asked, "Is she your friend? I've never seen her before?"

The woman looked up, revealing what she thought was a kind smile. "Young lady, how did you meet my Xiao Chen? I've never heard him mention you before."

Bai Jing was speechless. What did this mean?
Does he mean she doesn't like him?

Or do you want to find out about yourself?
hehe,.

She had never met this woman in her past life, but from Jiang Chen's blank face, she could tell that he disliked her presence.

"Is there something you need?" Jiang Chen's voice was chillingly cold. He looked up at the person who had come in. "If there's nothing else, please move aside. We still need to eat."

"You." The woman trembled with anger at Jiang Chen's indifference. "Xiao Chen, I know you don't like me, but all these years I've treated you like my own son. How come you come back and don't even go home before coming out to see this woman?" The woman's face was filled with anger and grievance, and her words made the situation even more ambiguous.

Bai Jing was amused by her, as if she cared a lot about her stepson.

"It's none of your business." Before Bai Jing could speak, Jiang Chen said indifferently again.

Bai Jing noticed that his hands, which were holding the chopsticks, had turned white, and she knew that he was enduring it.

"Hey, ma'am, who are you? What's your relationship with Comrade Jiang? Are you his mother?" Bai Jing wasn't going to put up with this person and asked directly.

"If it were your aunt, you wouldn't be showing the joy and excitement one would feel upon seeing a child. Why do you look like you're seeing an enemy?"

As soon as Bai Jing spoke, the onlookers in the restaurant turned their attention to Jiang Chen's stepmother.

He kept pointing and gesturing.

Before the woman could answer, Jiang Chen's voice rang out again, "She is my stepmother, my father's second wife."

"Oh."

A strange look appeared in Bai Jing's eyes. "Does she have her own biological child?" To prevent people from misunderstanding Jiang Chen, she asked again.

Jiang Chen nodded. "Yes, he's only five years younger than me."

Upon hearing this, everyone understood that the stepmother had encountered her stepson who had just returned home.

"Now I understand why she was glaring at you like you were a criminal. She wanted to ruin your reputation. Well, everyone says it's hard to be a stepmother, but how many are truly good stepmothers? She also has her own biological son, so it's hard for her to treat them all equally."

Bai Jing really didn't give Jiang Chen's stepmother the slightest bit of attitude.
