Chapter 56 "If it's given to me,..."

Meng Youyou stood at the window and watched Huo Qingshan and Cui Yan walk out of the office building. The two stood side by side, walking further and further away until they disappeared around the corner.

She looked away, lowered her head and stroked the blue bracelet on her wrist. After a long while, she seemed to murmur softly, "Such a beautiful bracelet, how come it's not precious at all? It's something you can see everywhere."

……

After seeing the person off, Huo Qingshan returned to his office. As he approached his desk, the first thing he saw was a blue bracelet lying on the table. It was the bracelet he had given away three hours earlier, and now it had been returned to its rightful owner, lying there all alone.

He subconsciously looked at the desk opposite him, but it was empty. The girl who had told him she had plans for the evening three hours earlier had not shown up.

My heart skipped a beat.

Huo Qingshan picked up the bracelet from the table with one hand and reached for his coat on the back of the chair with the other, then walked towards the door.

……

After leaving the camp, Meng Youyou first went to the cake shop to pay the remaining deposit and walked out of the shop carrying a white square cardboard box.

Some people wandered aimlessly through the streets. Friday evenings in this era were also quite lively. Customers came and went from grocery stores and general stores, and some street food stalls began to open one after another. The air was filled with the aroma of food, and people could be seen strolling and chatting everywhere on the streets.

Meng Youyou unconsciously walked to a stall selling roasted rice cakes. The stall owner was a sturdy middle-aged man wearing a faded apron and was busy working in front of the steaming hot griddle.

Seeing her approach, his face instantly lit up with a smile, and even the fine lines around his eyes radiated enthusiasm. He called out in a loud voice, "Miss, would you like a piece of roasted rice cake? It's fresh out of the pot and piping hot."

The hot plate sizzled, and several round rice cakes were expanding from the heat, their edges puffing up slightly and turning golden brown.

The rich aroma wafted straight into Meng Youyou's nose.

"Girl, we can add meat sauce, fried dough sticks, pickled cabbage, or shredded potatoes. You can choose the flavor."

Meng Youyou sniffed, "I want all of these, add one of each."

"Okay!" the boss replied cheerfully, his hands moving quickly and skillfully as he folded the rice cake in half and then in half again before handing it to Meng Youyou.

He even patted his chest and assured her, "Here you go, young lady, be careful, it's hot. If you like our cooking, come back next time!"

After paying, Meng Youyou reached out and took the money, then turned and disappeared back into the bustling crowd on the street.

I continued wandering aimlessly.

Just then, a red-roofed tricycle slowly stopped in front of Meng Youyou.

The driver was a thin, dark-skinned middle-aged man with a kind smile on his face. He greeted her warmly in Mandarin with a local accent, "Young lady, where are you going? Need a ride?"

Meng Youyou subconsciously shook her head and turned to leave.

I had only taken two steps when my gaze inadvertently fell on the handlebars and I saw a rough, cracked hand covered with crisscrossing cracks.

She pursed her lips and stopped in her tracks.

The fact that I had booked a table at the state-run restaurant in advance popped into my mind.

Hesitatingly, she looked up and met the driver's somewhat dim eyes.

This time, Meng Youyou didn't hesitate. She turned around and silently walked back to the back seat of the tricycle, saying softly, "Master, I want to go to the state-run restaurant on Wangchun Street."

The driver's previously dim eyes instantly brightened, and the wrinkles on his face seemed to smooth out a bit. He quickly replied, "Alright, miss, please hold on tight!"

He pedaled hard, and the tricycle wobbled forward, the axle making a slight creaking sound.

Once I was in the car, I realized I had forgotten to eat the roasted rice cake I was holding. The autumn night was chilly, and the once scalding hot food had now cooled down.

Meng Youyou peeled back the oil paper and started eating, but she couldn't eat anymore after just one bite.

"It tastes awful!" Meng Youyou thought to herself.

The driver, who was pedaling hard ahead, vaguely heard intermittent sobbing behind him and couldn't help but turn his head to glance back a few times.

You won't be surprised if you don't look, because what you see will terrify you.

The driver's right foot even slipped off the pedal for a moment. He quickly asked, "Young lady, why are you crying like this after eating just a roasted rice cake?"

Meng Youyou stopped caring and burst into tears: "It tastes awful! I spent three cents on it, how could it taste so bad!"

……

Huo Qingshan finally found Meng Youyou at a state-run restaurant, or more accurately, Meng Youyou who was completely drunk.

Huo Qingshan tried to bend down and carry her out, but Meng Youyou struggled and moved around, muttering, "I haven't finished my cake yet! I can't waste food!"

He looked stubborn.

Huo Qingshan could only put the person down again, silently took the plate of cake that had been chewed up in a mess, and sat down without saying a word to start eating it.

Meng Youyou reached out to stop her, acting like she was protecting her food: "I won't give you any, you've already eaten the longevity noodles."

Huo Qingshan paused for a moment, but reacted quickly enough to prevent Meng Youyou from snatching the cake away.

Once outside the restaurant, Meng Youyou was in a daze, quite drunk and barely conscious, and stopped making a fuss.

Huo Qingshan was then able to successfully carry the person into the car.

The vehicle drove smoothly back to the camp.

Meng Youyou actually woke up in the latter half of the journey, but unusually, she didn't make a fuss anymore. She just propped her head up with her hand, tilted her head, and stared at him without blinking.

very quiet.

Huo Qingshan would glance at her every now and then while driving, but each time he saw a different emotion in her eyes—sometimes passionate, sometimes melancholy, sometimes longing, sometimes resolute…

I felt inexplicably uneasy, though I couldn't quite put my finger on why.

The car stopped.

Huo Qingshan spoke gently, "Does your head hurt? Should we...?"

Before she could finish speaking, she felt a warm body rush into her arms, followed by two soft lips pressing against hers. At first, there was a hint of hesitation and a touch of awkwardness, but they pressed together, enveloped in the sweetness of cream.

But the situation changed drastically in the next second, suddenly becoming intense, and Meng Youyou began to bite Huo Qingshan's lips.

Thin beads of blood seeped out.

Meng Youyou's lips receded slightly, and the corners of her mouth were stained with bright red. The two of them were a little distance apart, but only a little; the distance between their noses was negligible.

Meng Youyou looked into Huo Qingshan's eyes, then reached out and gently touched his lips with her finger. "Does it hurt?"

Huo Qingshan remained silent, his dark eyes fixed on hers.

Meng Youyou's index finger was still tracing the shape of the man's lips, round and round, when she suddenly spoke again: "If... what you give me is the same as what you give others, then I don't want it."

The voice was soft and the speech was slow, but you couldn't hear much emotion in it.

The man seemed puzzled, a hint of doubt appearing in his eyes, which Meng Youyou noticed.

A slight smile played on her lips, a smile that seemed somewhat out of place for her age, yet undeniably beautiful. She abruptly changed the subject: "Were you very busy those few days in Ximing City?"

I'll be away on a business trip for the next couple of days, so I can only update one chapter. Please forgive me.

It will be fine in a couple of days, and updates will return to normal.

One more thing: please be kind in your comments, very few readers. If you don't like it, just leave. There are plenty of good books in the bookstore for you to choose from. Isn't the point of reading to have fun?

I've become a bit hesitant when I write these days, and I even revised part of the outline because of it, which makes writing less smooth now.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the fans who have been supporting me all this time. Thank you to everyone who voted for me with recommendation tickets and monthly tickets these past few days.

thanksgiving!
