Chapter 363 This is what she wanted
Huo Qingshan has been going on a business trip every week this month to give short-term lectures at the Ximing Army Border and Coastal Defense Academy. The topic is "Special Topics in Frontline Border Combat," which consists of four class periods and lasts for four weeks.
In the past, I would go for two or three days and then come back, with a relatively even workload. However, this time I am expected to be back on Friday, which means the business trip will be twice as long. After all, the course is coming to an end, and a graduation assessment and student presentation session has been added.
A little past 5:30 pm on Friday, Meng Youyou and Jiang Fu walked out of the conference room with the crowd. They had been sitting inside for a meeting, and Meng Youyou's boss was sitting next to her. The meeting lasted for more than two hours, and she didn't touch her phone once, behaving as obediently as ever.
Only after the meeting ended did Meng Youyou dare to take out her phone to check. A message had been sent over an hour earlier: "[Sorry, I can't go back tonight. The school leaders have organized a farewell dinner tomorrow, which I can't refuse. I might have to go back a day later.]"
Upon seeing the message, Meng Youyou felt a slight pang of disappointment, then began typing: [It's okay, I already had dinner plans with my colleagues tonight.]
A few minutes later, Meng Youyou was packing her bag at her workstation when she received a reply from the man: [Don't go home too late. If you're taking a taxi, remember to share your itinerary with me.]
Meng Youyou: [Understood.]
Jiang Fu stood at the office door waiting for another female colleague to come out. Meng Youyou walked over with her bag and asked in an extremely natural tone, "Hey, where should we eat later?"
Hearing this, Jiang Fu turned her head suspiciously, "Weren't you going to the high-speed rail station to pick up your Battalion Commander Huo? What? Have you suddenly changed your mind and started valuing your friends over your boyfriend?"
"What do you mean?" Meng Youyou nudged her arm. "Don't make me sound so heartless. Do you think I'm that kind of person? I'm obviously fair and square, okay?"
A female colleague, supporting her noticeably pregnant belly, joined the conversation from behind with a smile: "Xiao Meng is still in the honeymoon phase, it's normal, it's normal. My partner and I were like that when we first started dating, isn't that how all young people are when they're dating?"
The group laughed and joked as they went downstairs and walked to the neighboring residential area to find a parking space. Of the three, only Jiang Fu drove.
On the way to the city, the three of them discussed it back and forth, and finally decided to go to the shopping area near Meng Youyou's neighborhood to find a restaurant to eat at.
After dinner, when it was neither too early nor too late, Jiang Fu offered to drive the two women home. Meng Youyou said she could just walk a couple of blocks and it would be a good way to digest her food. Jiang Fu didn't insist, waved, rolled up the car window, and drove off with her female colleague.
The late autumn night breeze carried a slight chill. Meng Youyou walked slowly home along the sidewalk, then turned into a green belt side road inside the community, taking a shortcut.
The path wasn't narrow; it was paved with pebbles and lined with dense bushes. Walking through it would lead you to the building where she lived.
When Meng Youyou reached the halfway point, she realized that there was a long stretch of dark shadow ahead, with only a few scattered lights from distant buildings casting a faint ray of light on the road.
Normally, this area is a popular spot for elderly people to stroll and chat with their children, but tonight she walked almost to the end without encountering a single person. She figured it was because a section of the streetlights was broken. Meng Youyou had been staying in her company dormitory for the past week and didn't know when the streetlights in this area of the community had gone out.
She was a little afraid of the dark, especially when she was alone. Meng Youyou subconsciously quickened her pace, reaching into her bag to reach for her phone for light. As soon as the zipper was opened and her fingers went in, before she even touched the phone... the next second, a hurried dark shadow suddenly appeared in the wind.
Before she could react, the figure suddenly sprang out from the bushes beside her, grabbed her waist tightly from behind, and dragged her deeper and darker into the thicket.
Meng Youyou was terrified. She managed a short gasp before her mouth was immediately covered. Her body lost its balance and she was thrown heavily to the ground. Her elbows and knees hit the gravel, causing a sharp, piercing pain.
The man was wearing a baseball cap and his face was completely obscured. He was a huge, imposing figure, with his hands on his knees blocking her path. He was panting heavily, and then a sudden, abrupt sound of a zipper being pulled rang out, particularly loud in the quiet night.
Meng Youyou trembled all over, her back pressed tightly against the cold ground, desperately trying to shrink back, her eyes filled with terror. Her hands were still frozen in her bag, and in her panic, her fingertips suddenly touched a hard, small bottle with a crown-shaped cap.
Just then, a murky smell mixed with the odor of smoke hit her, and the man had already taken off his pants and was leaning closer to her.
Meng Youyou tried her best to calm herself down, shrinking back and shuffling along the ground. At the same time, her hand, hidden in her bag, trembled as she fumbled for the safety cap on the top of the bottle with her thumb. She then gripped it tightly with her fingernail. Just as the man's claws seized her shirt collar, Meng Youyou clenched the spray bottle and aimed it at his face, pressing it down without hesitation.
"Ah—!" A piercing scream immediately rang out.
The pungent fumes hit his eyes and nose, and the man immediately covered his face, swaying unsteadily.
Taking advantage of the moment when the other person was in pain, Meng Youyou used all her strength to lift her foot and kick him hard in the chest, causing him to stagger backward.
Meng Youyou scrambled and rolled to her feet, her hair disheveled and her bag agape, not even bothering to zip it up. She rushed out of the dark green belt like a madwoman and ran wildly toward the brightly lit area outside the community.
...
Until she boarded the high-speed train, Meng Youyou was in a daze, her mind a complete blank.
The girl sitting next to me was a young, stylish blonde wearing a white fuzzy dress. I was sitting as far to the side as possible to avoid bumping into her.
She seemed particularly disgusted with herself? Meng Youyou lowered her head and then noticed that her light blue jeans were covered in mud and grass clippings, making her look rather...sloppy. After looking at them for a few seconds, Meng Youyou looked up without much reaction and her eyes met those of the girl in the car window—this person should comb her hair, Meng Youyou thought.
Her hair tie probably fell onto the grass or along the way when she escaped; Meng Youyou couldn't remember, and she had no intention of retracing her steps. After sitting there blankly for a while, Meng Youyou finally remembered that she should have run to the police immediately—the most correct and rational course of action for a victim.
In the brightly lit interview room, the police officer would likely bring her a cup of hot tea, and a gentle and understanding female officer would patiently ask her about the details of the case, reassuring her not to be afraid and that it was safe there. If they were efficient enough, and if the surveillance cameras at the main gates of the complex didn't malfunction, the criminals might already be in custody by now.
Instead of rushing to Ximing City overnight, this decision was both absurd and capricious.
But... Meng Youyou simply glanced down at the time on her phone, then opened the railway app and checked the estimated arrival time displayed on her e-ticket. She had repeated this action countless times since boarding the train.
Fortunately, the tourism industries in Fanzhou and Ximing are both highly developed, and there are still many trains running between them at night, with the speed not slowing down at all compared to the daytime. Meng Youyou came out of Ximing Railway Station at about 10 p.m.
After what happened two hours earlier, Meng Youyou was hesitant to take a taxi. The presence of a strange man alone in the room made her feel uneasy and even nauseous. She caught the last subway train.
Around 11 o'clock, Meng Youyou got off the subway. It was still a two-kilometer walk to the school. The military academy was located in a somewhat remote area. In theory, the security in the vicinity should be good. After all, under the nose of "principles," unless one had the guts of a bear or a leopard, who would dare to act recklessly?
The streetlights were bright, and none of them were broken. The asphalt road in front of her was straight and wide, and the road surface was very clean, but Meng Youyou still didn't dare to step onto this road alone to go find him.
She squatted down on a corner of the subway entrance steps, hugging her knees, and dialed Huo Qingshan's number. After only two rings, the other end answered: "Yoyo." He called her name in the most ordinary and intimate tone.
With a faint hissing sound from the phone, the man's familiar voice came through the receiver, and Meng Youyou's throat tightened. The emotions she had been holding back all along crumbled, and her voice trembled with a heavy sob as she spoke: "Huo Qingshan, please come find me."
There was a momentary pause on the other end of the receiver, followed by a muffled thud, as if a bone had struck something, and then a series of rustling sounds. "Where are you now?" the man asked, his voice now clearly tinged with urgency.
“I’m at…the…subway…station.” Meng Youyou sniffed, her words choked with emotion.
From inside the school to outside, and then to the subway station, it was more than two kilometers, and he didn't hang up the phone the whole time.
Meng Youyou held the phone tightly to her ear, listening intently to the solid and rapid footsteps on the other end. It was as if each step was firmly planted on the heads of countless ugly little devils growing in her heart, crushing and smoothing away the messy unease, grievances, and fears little by little.
Gradually, Meng Youyou stopped crying.
After an unknown amount of time, the continuous running sound suddenly stopped. The world seemed to pause abruptly, and Meng Youyou felt a sudden panic. Just as she was about to speak, a man's deep voice came through the receiver, his breath heavy yet exceptionally clear: "Look up."
Upon hearing this, Meng Youyou's eyelashes trembled slightly, her fingers tightened around her phone, and she slowly raised her head—just ten meters away across the street, a streetlight shone directly on the man.
He left in a hurry, wearing only a black short-sleeved shirt in the late autumn night. The soft, dim light enveloped him, and his breathing after running caused the man's tall and straight body to rise and fall. Even the light and shadow around him were shaken by him. Although he was just standing there, he seemed like a wall that could block all the wind and rain.
Huo Qingshan's gaze pierced through the sparse traffic and the evening breeze, locking completely on her without wavering.
A few seconds later, the red light on the traffic light pole next to the man began to flash frequently. Just before the green light came on, Huo Qingshan had already taken a step forward and was running straight towards her.
As Meng Youyou watched the figure getting closer and closer, she hurriedly tried to stand up by supporting herself on the steps. However, she had been squatting for too long, and her legs had already gone numb. With a little effort, her knees buckled, and her body swayed uncontrollably.
Almost at the same moment, Huo Qingshan rushed down the steps, his arms first supporting her waist, his palms warm and firm, lifting her weak body steadily.
He held her tightly in his arms, and Meng Youyou felt the warm sweat emanating from his body. Instinctively, she hugged him back tightly—this was what she wanted most, and she was willing to cross a city for it. It was something that the brightly lit meeting room couldn't provide, something that cup of steaming hot tea couldn't provide, and something that other people's gentle words of care couldn't give her.
In front of the deserted subway station, a couple embraced intimately. A few minutes earlier, the man had leaned close to her ear and whispered, "What's wrong? What happened?" The girl simply shook her head in his arms without saying a word.
Knowing she didn't want to talk about it right now, the man lowered his head and kissed the top of her head, then stopped pressing for details. He simply held her more tightly in his arms, occasionally using his fingertips to carefully pluck a few bits of grass from her hair.
The overwhelming soreness in her nasal cavity was slowly replaced by a familiar scent. This constant cleansing and covering sensation made her feel comfortable, as if she were taking a bath, washing away the dirt. She felt a sense of attachment to it. All Meng Youyou could think about was how to get closer, even closer, as if that would make her unable to smell the foul odor of cigarettes clinging to her.
Huo Qingshan noticed that the person in his arms seemed to be trying to burrow deeper into her body. He didn't know what had happened to her tonight; something terrible must have happened, otherwise she wouldn't be like this. At this moment, all he could do was tighten his arms as much as he could, holding her as tightly as he could.
Once Meng Youyou felt that her tone of voice was no longer uncontrollably distorted, she opened her mouth and said her first words after actually seeing people: "I want to take a shower."
A dozen minutes later, Huo Qingshan led her to a hotel between the school and the subway station, where they booked a room and checked in.
