Chapter 306 "Not Important" (Part 1)
On the last day of the year, a light snow fell on Nanyu Mountain. In Fanzhou, this was a rare sight—this small town nestled on the border of Nanyun usually never saw snow, except for a few towering mountain peaks occasionally covered in white.
But this year is different. The snowflakes gently fell on the hilltop, not densely, but real enough.
The distant mountains were shrouded in a misty fog. Their once sharp, dark blue lines were now softened by the snow, creating a beautiful interplay of green and white, as if the brushstrokes of a traditional Chinese ink painting were slowly melting away.
A tall, slender man had been standing before the grave for a long time, a thin layer of snow clinging to his shoulders. Before him stood two tombstones side by side, their black stone appearing even more serene against the white snow.
Lu Feng had important business to attend to on the day of the memorial service and was unable to attend. Later, when he had some free time, he came to the mountain a few more times.
The reason he suddenly had this idea today is because... in the early morning, after finishing his night shift, he came out of the brigade base and walked to the familiar breakfast stall on the street to queue up for steamed buns.
The city was just awakening from its slumber, the air thick with the crisp chill of dawn. Weariness enveloped him, making everything around him appear hazy and indistinct, as if seen through frosted glass.
Behind me, a young couple was chatting while waiting in line. The girl excitedly told the boy, "I heard there's a fireworks display at the city center square tonight, you have to come with me." As she spoke, she seemed to gently tug at her boyfriend's sleeve.
"What time?" The boy's response was hoarse from just waking up, and he didn't seem very interested.
"It seems to start at 11:30."
"So late?" The boy raised his voice, his tone revealing his difficulty: "By the time I finish watching it and get back, it will be past 1 a.m. I have to get up early for work tomorrow. I wasn't scheduled to have time off this time."
"No." The girl's voice held a hint of coquettishness, her attitude inexplicably stubborn: "You have to come with me!"
"Aren't all fireworks pretty much the same? They're everywhere on New Year's Eve, every household sets off fireworks. Haven't you seen enough yet? Why do you have to watch them tonight?" The boy tried to reason with him, clearly not understanding why there was any reason to watch them.
“It’s different. Anyway, you have to come with me to the square to watch the fireworks tonight.” The girl insisted, still without giving a reason.
Lu Feng listened half-heartedly, the steam from the hot buns warming his slightly cool face. Suddenly, he remembered a year ago, when they had finished their business at Fanzhou University and were walking together on campus.
As I passed by the library, I happened to see two female students, around twenty years old, walking hand in hand down the steps with light steps.
The girl with shoulder-length short hair walking on the left had a sly and curious smile on her face. She turned her head and asked the girl next to her with pigtails and delicate features in a mysterious way: "Hey, tell me the truth. He just asked you to go out. Is it... that he's finally going to confess to you?"
"No." The girl took a round object out of her pocket with her free hand. "He came to give me a hand warmer. He said that this way, my hands won't feel cold when I write, since he knows I get chilblains easily in winter." After saying that, she put the hand warmer back in.
As dusk settled, the girl with pigtails blushed slightly, covering her face with one hand while muttering, "That idiot, I'm really fed up! He stutters as soon as he speaks, and his words don't even make sense. I think he talks quite fluently with his roommates!"
She paused, then sighed and said, "Anyway, I don't think it's going to work in this lifetime that he'll suddenly become a genius."
"So what are you planning to do?" the short-haired girl pressed, her eyes gleaming with gossip. "What can I do?" the girl with pigtails lowered her hands from her face, and with a do-or-die attitude, put them back into her coat pockets. "I've made up my mind. I'll wait another month at most. If he still doesn't confess to me," the girl took a deep breath and continued, "I plan to ask him out on New Year's Eve."
The girl's voice gradually softened: "Didn't our French writing teacher, Claire, say that in their country, couples who are in love like to meet up to watch fireworks on New Year's Eve? They believe that God will bless them so that their relationship will get better and better in the coming year, and they will be together sweetly all year long?"
Her gaze drifted into the distance, filled with longing, before she looked back at her companion. "I mentioned this to him casually before, intending to hint at it to him."
The girl with pigtails sounded uncertain, even pleading: "You know... if I had asked him out that night, my meaning would have been pretty clear, right? He should have understood, right?"
As soon as she finished speaking, she seemed embarrassed by her own bold and proactive idea. Before the other person could answer, the girl stomped her foot in annoyance, "Ugh, this is so annoying! If I've gone this far and he still doesn't understand, I'll just ignore him! I can't really confess my feelings, can I? That would be too embarrassing!"
Seeing this, the short-haired girl quickly grabbed her arm and comforted her with a smile, "No, no, if that's really the case, we won't want him anymore. He's so clueless, he deserves it..." The two girls laughed and joked, their voices and footsteps mingling together, and as they walked further and further away, they finally disappeared completely in the cool night breeze.
Lu Feng suddenly stopped and looked at the man who had stopped a few steps behind him with a puzzled expression—his dark eyes revealed an undisguised loneliness that was extremely rare, and he seemed to be muttering to himself, "So it only works on the Gregorian New Year."
After leaving the campus, Lu Feng was dragged to a bar by Huo Qingshan and drank all night.
Without being able to articulate a specific reason, Lu Feng accepted the three piping hot meat buns handed to him by the breakfast stall owner and, on a whim, changed his original plan to go home and catch up on sleep.
He turned around as if possessed and walked towards the supply and marketing cooperative in the opposite direction from his home. He waited outside the newly opened store and became one of the first customers, going in to buy two bottles of liquor.
Lu Feng suddenly had an urge to go up the mountain to see him. He didn't know why, but he just felt that the guy probably wanted to drink tonight.
As night fell on the mountaintop, the air grew increasingly cold, mixed with the rich aroma of wine emanating from the snow, causing a slight stinging sensation when inhaled.
Lu Feng slowly exhaled, his white breath blurring and dissipating in the chilly air. The figure that had been standing still for so long finally moved; the man stepped forward and crouched down.
“Brother,” he began, his voice trembling from standing in the cold wind for so long, “I have to be on duty tomorrow, so I can’t drink. I won’t be able to keep you company this time.” As he spoke, Lu Feng straightened the empty wine bottle on the ground. The liquid seeped into the snow-covered ground, leaving a dark stain, and the strong smell of alcohol lingered for a long time after it was poured out.
On the right side of the tombstone, the porcelain portrait of the man has a warm smile and relaxed eyes. Although they have known each other for many years, Lu Feng has rarely seen such an expression.
Lu Feng watched in silence, then unconsciously twitched the corners of his lips as well, "I'll be leaving now."
After saying that, the man picked up another empty wine bottle from the ground and stood up.
Before he had taken two steps, Lu Feng suddenly stopped. Not far away, a slender figure was walking towards him through the snow—wearing a thick black coat, a red scarf covering most of the woman's face, revealing only a pair of clear and bright eyes, carrying a large object in her arms, snowflakes falling sporadically on her shoulders and hair.
At first glance, Lu Feng recognized the person. He was quite surprised to see Meng Youyou here. "You...you're not...?"
