Chapter 300 ☆ A Life-or-Death Struggle (Part 2) ☆

Chu Yao's body was violently shaken, her vision was blurred by a blinding crimson, and the endless mournful cries echoed in her ears, which inadvertently stimulated a long-dormant nerve circuit in her body.

Chu Yao suddenly recalled a conversation that took place in the infirmary a year ago—Director Qi placed a small white medicine bottle on the table, pushed it over, and simply said, "It was purchased through overseas channels. It's supposedly a new drug from there. Try it first and see how it goes. We'll observe it further later."

Sitting opposite him, Huo Qingshan didn't say a word, didn't even glance at the medicine bottle, and expressionlessly reached out to grab the bottle and put it in his pocket.

At that time, it had been less than a month since Battalion Commander Huo was discharged from the hospital after being seriously injured in the line of duty. Although Chu Yao did not know what mission he was injured in, it was beyond her knowledge.

It's important to know that in the military, soldiers are prone to injuries, whether during daily training or on missions. It's also common for them to develop new injuries on top of old ones, leaving behind chronic conditions. Therefore, Chu Yao didn't take it to heart at the time.

But now... Chu Yao reached for a flashlight, bent down and lowered her eyes. Her fingers hurriedly pried open the man's mouth, and the beam of light shone into his mouth. She could clearly see spontaneous bleeding at the edge of his gums, and not just in one place. In fact, his oral mucosa was covered with pinpoint bleeding points.

Upon seeing this, Chu Yao's gaze darkened, and she then flipped open his lower eyelid. The conjunctiva, which should have been a pale pink, was now a bloodless, waxy white.

Chu Yao thought that she might have found the reason why Huo Qingshan's blood clotting function was almost non-existent.

If these abnormal signs appear in one person at the same time, it is by no means a coincidence. It is highly likely that there is a problem with the blood mechanism in his body, and it is not an acute condition that developed in a short period of time.

Witnessing Chu Yao's series of reactions, Meng Youyou seemed to have caught a glimmer of hope. She immediately sat up straight and asked urgently, "What's wrong? Chu Yao, what's wrong with him? Is there a way?"

Chu Yao turned her head to look at her, her lips moved slightly, and she was about to say something when she heard a very weak male voice from below her: "Don't cry."

Chu Yao almost doubted her ears. She turned around in disbelief and saw the man lying on the wooden board, who had been unconscious, struggling to open his eyelids a crack.

In Chu Yao's understanding, this was almost a miracle. In all her years in the profession, she had never actually witnessed a patient who had fallen into a deep coma due to hemorrhagic shock wake up midway through treatment!
The next second, the man said slowly, "Oh, don't... cry."

He seemed to be trying to raise his hand, but it was clearly very difficult for him. He couldn't do it. Chu Yao stared at him, unable to guess what he wanted to do.
His large, weak hand barely managed to lift an inch before it began to droop. Just then, a slender, white hand grasped the back of his hand and guided his fingers to stroke her cheek. Fortunately, she knew what he was thinking.

The man forced a smile, his fingertips slowly tracing patterns on her face and around her eyes. This subtle movement was actually quite difficult for him, and Chu Yao could tell that he truly had no strength left.

He was wiping away her tears.

Seeing this, Chu Yao seemed to have found the reason why he had woken up halfway through—perhaps it was because he heard his lover's painful cries, and he simply couldn't bear to lie there quietly, sleeping soundly, unable to do anything. He couldn't bear it; he wanted to do something, to do something for her one last time. So, he fought against death with all his might, bargaining, saying, "I want to see my lover one last time; she's still crying!"

"She's so sad! She's still crying! Can't you hear her?"

How can I just leave like this?

Finally... finally... I struggled to wake up.

"I want to see you...smile," Huo Qingshan said. "You look beautiful when you smile."

Meng Youyou bit her lower lip hard, grabbed her sleeve and wiped away the tears on her face in a few quick movements, forcing a smile at the man that looked even uglier than crying.

"Beautiful!" the man said with a smile, a glimmer of light flashing in his eyes, but his voice grew softer and softer, his breath growing weaker: "Oh, if there's a next life, will you still be with me?"

Meng Youyou kept rubbing her cheek against his palm, tears streaming down her face once again uncontrollably. She just kept shaking her head, saying, "No! No!"

She felt the large hand that had been tightly enveloping her suddenly loosen, losing all its strength, like a lifeless withered leaf. His hand was cold, hanging limply between her palms.

His eyes had closed again.

Meng Youyou's ears suddenly rang with a buzzing sound, and countless black snowflakes instantly crowded in front of her eyes. Her brain felt as if it were covered by a wet quilt, suffocating her fiercely, and she couldn't find a way out.

Meng Youyou frantically grabbed the remaining gauze pads from the tray, piled them up thickly, and pressed them with all her might onto the man's still bleeding wound, like a stubborn, deluded person.

In a short while, the pile of white gauze in the girl's hands was stained a bright, dazzling red, but she seemed oblivious and didn't give up. Meng Youyou deftly took off her coat, crumpled it into a ball, and used it to block the gauze again. Chu Yao, who had been squatting behind them, silently stood up, took two steps back, and watched the girl in front of her doing something meaningless and obsessive. Chu Yao did not step forward to stop her.

That's so cruel, so incredibly cruel!
How could she tell this girl, whose eyes were filled with pain, what she was going to say? Was she going to tell her: "The man you love has no blood clotting ability anymore. Now he can only watch helplessly as his blood drains away and he eventually dies?"

If it takes a little longer, maybe another ten minutes, otherwise... she couldn't continue thinking. Chu Yao lowered her eyes; she couldn't bear to look any longer.

"It won't stop, Huo Qingshan, there's so much blood, what should I do if I can't stop it?"

"What should I do? Huo Qingshan, I'm so scared!" the girl murmured helplessly and desperately, her broken syllables carrying a heart-wrenching tremor.

Of course, no one responded to her anymore.

She curled up and lowered her head, resting her forehead against his stiff, cold shoulder. "Huo Qingshan, I'm so scared! Please don't do this!"

This alcove, temporarily set aside for emergency use, had a very low ceiling. The dim light from a flashlight barely illuminated a small area, and the dust floating in the beams was mixed with a strong smell of blood.

Fine mud fragments were still falling from the adobe wall overhead, landing on Huo Qingshan's blood-soaked military uniform, which Meng Youyou unconsciously brushed away.

It shouldn't be a hallucination; Chu Yao heard someone knocking on the door, but the force of the knocking carried an indescribable sense of dejection.

She tiptoed over to open the door, where a bald dove stood.

After the door opened, the man quickly glanced into the room, then quickly looked away. His voice, unusually, carried a hint of barely suppressed emotion as he spoke: "I just received a notification that the rear division headquarters has urgently approved the dispatch of a helicopter to transport our translator comrade to the C1 outpost to continue the 'Awakening of Insects' mission. It is expected to land in two minutes, about 100 meters from the C4 outpost at the five o'clock position. Translator Meng, you need to come with me to your position beforehand."

Chu Yao didn't respond for her. She stepped aside to make way, her gaze fixed on the girl's desolate back. Bald Dove followed her gaze.

They saw the girl slowly loosen the mixture of gauze and clothes from her hands.

After a moment of silence, Meng Youyou lowered her head and leaned close to the man's ear, her lips gently brushing against his earlobe, and softly said, "I agree."

They say that hearing is the last sense that humans lose as they approach death, and Meng Youyou only hopes that this is true.

The vulture's sudden visit and his words seemed to instantly bring the girl back to her senses from her escape. The difference before and after made it seem as if they were two completely different people.

Meng Youyou put her blood-stained coat back on. When she turned around, her eyes were still red, but there was no trace of tears. She looked directly at their faces and spoke in a calm and even voice: "Okay, I'll go with you now."

Meng Youyou only allowed herself to break down for a few minutes; she couldn't allow it to continue any longer.

As they passed each other, Meng Youyou stopped, leaned close to Chu Yao's ear, and asked, "Could you do me a favor?"

Chu Yao nodded slightly, gesturing for her to speak.

“Don’t let his daily work in the rain and mud fool you; he’s actually very clean. Could you help me wipe him down? That might make him a little more comfortable when he leaves.” She added, “I still have half a bottle of water in my kettle.”

Chu Yao agreed: "Okay."

"Also, I have to leave now. Could you stay here and keep him company for a while? I don't want him to be all alone during the last few minutes of his life."

Chu Yao agreed to all of them: "Okay."

The girl gave her a blank smile and said, "Thank you," before bowing deeply to her.

Then, he turned and left without ever looking back.

These two chapters are probably going to be quite tear-jerking; I cried buckets while writing them. I'll revise them again tomorrow; readers who know me are probably used to my habit of revising the story from time to time. Actually, I hope everyone won't drop the story just because they're afraid of the angst—I promise!!! From these two chapters onwards, this is the most essential part of the book!
