Chapter 269 Offensive and Defensive Battle (Part 1)
The fourth day of the supply disruption.
The night, like an ink-stained velvet cloth, pressed heavily over the rolling mountains. There was no moonlight, and even the starlight was scarce.
The banyan forest on the east side was unusually quiet, with the aerial roots of the old banyan trees hanging down to the ground, peaceful and serene.
In the bushes on the western side, several night birds fluttered up and then silently disappeared into the darkness.
Suddenly, a deafening boom shattered the silence!
Immediately afterwards, a second, a third... artillery fire erupted one after another on the western front, flames instantly tearing through the night, and smoke billowing in the darkness.
……
"Enemy fire on the western front confirmed." In the forward command room, the communications soldier pressed his earpiece with his left hand while his right hand gripped a pen that moved rapidly across his intelligence notebook.
The moment the call ended, the shorthand was converted into a written record in less than a minute.
He strode to the sand table, where the battalion commander, who had been waiting for a long time, snatched the record sheet. The communications soldier stood aside and promptly reiterated the key points: "Report! Four new 85mm cannon live-fire positions have been confirmed on the western front. The enemy has deployed a reinforced company-level unit and is creating a feint attack on a battalion-level scale in conjunction with the simulated artillery group!"
The battalion commander stared intently at the intelligence report, tapping his fingertip three times on the edge of the sand table. The operations staff immediately gathered around. He picked up a blue pencil and drew two arrows on the sand table, then commanded in a deep voice, "Notify the 3rd Company of the 2nd Battalion to execute the M-2 Bait-and-Shuttle Level B contingency plan."
Inside the command center, Meng Youyou, sitting to one side, received the signal to begin executing the contingency plan. She immediately understood, methodically turning the knob to switch to the designated channel. Once the radio connected, her tone was urgent: "Eagle's Nest calling Yangtze! The western front is under attack! Our unit's western position is being attacked by an enemy force of about a battalion. We request the regimental command to immediately dispatch the 1st Battalion and the 2nd Artillery Company as reinforcements! Repeat, requesting reinforcements!"
……
Behind the ridgeline, through the binoculars of the Y Army's observation post, shadowy figures could be seen deep in the dense forest—a large force was rapidly moving westward.
First, they saw a group of soldiers advancing forward on the slope near the valley, using the bushes as cover. The muzzle flashes of their guns were particularly glaring in the dim light.
Immediately afterwards, more figures emerged from behind the rocky area on the other side, taking turns to cover their advance towards the high ground.
In the distance, the roar of machine guns rose and fell, bullets swept across the tree canopy, and leaves rustled down.
Further away, blurry figures could be seen moving through the smoke of battle.
……
Figures moved about in the dense forest.
The ropes dragged across the damp earth, the branches tied to them scraping against the bushes with a rustling sound. The ropes on the soldiers' backs dug into their shoulder blades, but they still ran fast. From a distance, the outline of a well-formed skirmish line was faintly visible in the twilight.
Another group crouched behind the rocks, took out armbands from their backpacks—red, blue, and white—and quickly put them on. Every now and then, they would change positions, stand up again, and crouch down to run to another hiding place.
Behind the rocky area, smoke grenades were ignited, and white smoke rose slowly, twisting and spreading in the wind. Figures swayed in the smoke, sometimes clear, sometimes blurry.
The machine gunner lay prone in his cover, aiming his gun at the distant treetops, and pulled the trigger. The bullet whistled through the air, striking the empty oil drum with a dull thud. The drum vibrated and hummed from the impact, the gunshot echoing through the drum walls as if coming from all directions.
Every few minutes, someone would throw a string of firecrackers into the distance. The firecrackers would trace an arc in the air and explode upon landing, the sound neither too loud nor too soft, just enough to blend into the gunfire.
……
Tick-tock-tick-tock
Time seemed to freeze in the small command room, like a frozen river on an iceberg. Every second that passed was clearly audible with each breath, and the slightest change gripped everyone's hearts, slow, anxious, and intensely tense. Meng Youyou sat hunched over in front of the radio, the static in her headphones like fine ice needles pricking her eardrums.
She was waiting, or rather, everyone in the command center was waiting, all eagerly awaiting the arrival of that crucial communication that everyone was anticipating.
The tape recorder on her right was spinning slowly, the tape silently winding past the head. Every few seconds, Meng Youyou would subconsciously glance at it to check if it was working properly; repeating this action seemed to give her a brief sense of reassurance.
She dared not look up at her surroundings, feeling that everyone in the room, whether intentionally or unintentionally, was watching her, waiting for her to hand in a satisfactory answer as soon as possible.
She simply avoided glancing at it, lest it disturb her peace of mind.
This was Meng Youyou's first time truly immersing herself in frontline electronic intelligence work during real-time combat. Her limbs and fingers, controlled by her brain, were not as agile and nimble as usual. They became stiff and sluggish due to tension, like mechanical parts frozen stiff in the harsh winter outdoors in the north.
Suddenly, the white noise in my ears changed tone.
Instantly, Meng Youyou's heart skipped a beat. They've finally arrived!
She gripped the pen tightly, focusing all her attention on her ears: "...confirmed that the enemy's main force has been transferred to the western front, at least two company-sized units."
The pen plunged into the paper, and Meng Youyou scribbled furiously, her handwriting almost piercing through the paper:
"00:23 The enemy confirms our feint was successful"
The communication in my ear continued: "...Enemy artillery is shifting positions. It is recommended that the eastern front proceed as planned."
Upon hearing this, Meng Youyou finally let out a soft breath, the tension she had been holding for someone finally eased slightly.
……
One minute later, an explosion occurred "without warning" in the direction of the banyan forest on the east side.
If every sudden burst of artillery fire on this land, beneath the surface of calm, would send chills down one's spine, then this time, when the first cannon shot ripped through the precarious tranquility of the eastern front, even Meng Youyou felt a rare moment of excitement.
The shells slammed into the mud, sending plumes of mud shooting into the sky like black fountains. Then came the second, the third—the impact points began to extend toward our front lines, and blasted clods of earth and twigs pelted our helmets with a crackling sound.
Y Army's infantry line began to move. Three platoons advanced in a wedge formation, machine gunners lying prone behind natural cover formed by banyan tree roots, firing short bursts with great patience. Mortar shells whizzed overhead, landing around our forward positions and exploding into bursts of fire.
Their attack was almost frantic, their ambition laid bare in every step they took.
The vanguard platoon of soldiers leaped out of their cover almost the instant the artillery fire extended, submachine guns slung across their chests, firing as they ran, bullets raining down like a deluge. The engineers followed closely behind, the fuses of their demolition charges gleaming coldly in the smoke, the nozzles of their flamethrowers glowing red-hot, like a pack of hungry beasts baring their sharp claws, eager to tear through their prey's defenses.
Their intentions were crystal clear—faster, faster, the fastest! They were giving our troops no chance to breathe, no window of opportunity to adjust. The artillery barrage spread almost in sync with the infantry charge; bullets and explosions wove together a moving wall of fire, unstoppable, distorting even the air in its wake.
Further away, the second echelon of the Y Army had begun to assemble, with more shadowy figures swaying in the smoke, surging in wave after wave like a tide, ready to engulf the entire battle line at any moment.
……
Inside the command center, Meng Youyou quickly got into the zone, methodically executing the planned procedures: "Eagle's Nest calling Yangtze River! Eagle's Nest calling Yangtze River!"
The enemy has temporarily deployed at least one reinforced battalion on the eastern front and is launching a fierce attack along the A3-A4 axis! Our forward observation posts have been destroyed!
More than half of the casualties in the 1st Company of the 2nd Battalion were killed or wounded.
Request immediate approval for my unit to withdraw to the second line of defense, area A9! Repeat! Request to withdraw to area A9!
