Chapter 266 "Come Out for a Moment"

When Huo Qingshan pushed open the door, this was the scene he saw—the girl was lying on the table, her shoulders shrugging, not making much noise, but anyone with eyes could see what she was doing.

The observer, who was less than a meter away from Meng Youyou, glanced at her from time to time, seemingly wanting to offer words of comfort but unsure of where to begin.

The creaking of the door hinges startled Meng Youyou. She looked up at the sound and saw a few damp strands of hair sticking to her temples.

Unexpectedly meeting a pair of deep, dark eyes, Meng Youyou quickly pulled her head back as if electrocuted, burying her face in her sleeves and rubbing it haphazardly a few times.

Huo Qingshan immediately strode over, pulled over a wooden stool from the corner, and sat down, no more than half an arm's length away from her. His gaze was fixed on her profile, especially her reddened eyes.

Meng Youyou had already raised her head, but her face was turned inward towards the wall. She first took two deep sniffs, then reached out to flip through the workbook on the table, her knuckles flying as she turned the pages. Once she found it, she immediately pushed it in front of the man.

He quickly got into work mode and said, "Data on the Y Army's artillery positions." His voice was muffled, with a slightly nasal tone.

When Meng Youyou spoke, she kept her head down and her eyes lowered. Apart from that first glance, she never met his gaze again.

After saying this, she didn't hear his response, and Meng Youyou didn't even look at his reaction. She just continued explaining to herself: "It's intelligence that was intercepted from the communication between the enemy's artillery calibration team and the command post. I checked it twice, and the confidence level is over 90%..." As she spoke, Meng Youyou felt the gaze that had been staring at her finally shift to the notebook.

After the explanation was finished, a short, low comment came to my ears: "Not bad."

Immediately afterwards, the man stood up and ordered Meng Youyou, "Eavesdropper, come out with me for a moment."

Upon hearing this, Meng Youyou looked up at him in surprise. The kerosene lamp above the man's head cast a dim yellow halo around his shoulder, blurring the sharp lines of his jaw.

The next second, he turned around and left, striding to the door, opening it and walking out.

Meng Youyou sat on the stool in a daze for a few seconds, then, after she came to her senses, she stood up and followed him out.

As soon as she stepped outside, she saw him waiting for her three meters away from the door, standing tall with his back to the door. Directly above his head was a large, drooping, cone-shaped stalactite, with a drop of water clinging to its tip. The droplet trembled gently with the flow of air in the cave, hanging precariously from the top of the drooping rock.

The backup site was chosen in a natural U-shaped cave with openings at both ends. The end facing the enemy-controlled area was artificially transformed into a semi-circular observation bunker, while the other end was concealed on the side of our army's defense line.

After exiting through the steel armored door of the spare room, one must walk through a winding passage nearly twenty meters long to get out.

Perhaps hearing the door open and close, the man didn't turn his head, didn't say a word, and strode forward.

Seeing this, Meng Youyou had no choice but to follow closely. Halfway there, the man suddenly stopped, and Meng Youyou stopped as well.

The acupoints varied in width, and they were currently at the U-shaped bend, which was the widest part of the acupoints, but it wasn't very spacious, just enough for two people to walk side by side.

The man turned to face her, and in the dim light, suddenly asked, "Why are you crying?"

The sudden question momentarily stunned Meng Youyou; she hadn't expected him to call her out to ask this.

Without thinking, she blurted out instinctively, "I didn't cry."

Meng Youyou stubbornly insisted, not knowing why, but she just didn't want to admit it. She hadn't seen anyone cry in all the days she'd been here, and she didn't want to admit she was the most vulnerable one, especially not in front of him.

"You are currently under the command of the reconnaissance platoon. I am your direct commander, and I have the right to know the true psychological state of my personnel in order to make real-time assessments of their battlefield adaptability." The man repeated himself in a measured tone, "So answer me, why are you crying?"

Hearing him say that, that indescribable emotion that made her eyes and nose sting instantly surged up again, and Meng Youyou's voice unconsciously rose a little: "I said I didn't cry!" Her tone sounded inexplicably impulsive and a little trembling. Only after she blurted it out did she belatedly realize it.

As the words fell, the atmosphere froze, and a deathly silence enveloped the two of them.

After the two met again in this place, they seemed to never have a proper conversation. They were always at odds, always barbed and sarcastic. He never truly believed in her abilities and thought she was incompetent. He always adopted a superior-like, domineering attitude. As soon as he saw her show even the slightest sign of not meeting the standards, he couldn't wait to bring out the cold, hard rules to try and prove that she was simply not up to the task.

They remained in this silent standoff for an unknown period of time. Suddenly, Meng Youyou felt a drop of water fall from above, landing on her forehead and flowing down the curve of her forehead into her eye. It was a little irritating and uncomfortable, and she instinctively raised her right hand to rub her eyes.

At one end of the cave, the iron door was tightly closed, the door panel and frame were made so tightly that not a single ray of light could seep out. At the other end, facing the outside, a few rays of moonlight occasionally shone through the undulating rock wall.

The view was hazy, as if a black cloth had been draped over one's eyes. Even Huo Qingshan, with his exceptional night vision, could only make out the outline of the person in front of him, not their expression. He stared intently at the girl's repeated rubbing of her eyes, the image of those red, misty eyes he had just seen in the room flashing through his mind.

Just then, Meng Youyou, who had just finished rubbing her eyes and was about to put her hand down, heard the man opposite her let out a barely perceptible sigh, followed by Huo Qingshan's softened tone: "Is something wrong with your body? Is the wound on your hand infected? Or..."

He was hard, and she was hard too, even harder than him. But when he suddenly softened, Meng Youyou felt a little lost.

Meng Youyou was taken aback for a moment, then shook her head and replied softly, "No."

The man suddenly took a step closer to her, leaned down, and the distance between them suddenly shortened. He gently placed his hands on her shoulders, his voice softening as he called out to her, "Yoyo."
