Chapter 158 "Who exactly are you?" (Part 1)
At night, Chu Yao lay in bed, lost in thought and unable to sleep. The scene she had witnessed in the artificial hillside on her way back from the garden that evening kept replaying in her mind.
Ever since Jiang Zheng took her to Xu Penggang's birthday banquet, no one in the manor dared to neglect her as before.
How to describe the change in the attitude of those lackeys towards her? It's like they went from treating her like a plaything to serving a woman who had some weight in their "second brother's" eyes.
The most noticeable change was that the two servants who brought her food no longer slammed the plates down in front of her with an attitude of "take it or leave it," but instead placed their hands respectfully on the table and greeted her, "Miss Chu, please have your meal."
Furthermore, her movements were no longer so restricted; she was allowed to go downstairs to stroll through some of the gardens and orchards near the villa.
This afternoon was the first time Chu Yao had stepped out of the main villa. Unexpectedly, she ran into that group of people, who were gathered in twos and threes behind the artificial hill. They were all limp and weak, as if their bones had been pulled out. Some were lying directly on the ground, while others were leaning against the artificial hill. In their hands, they were all holding a silver tin foil-like object, which they brought to their mouths and noses and sniffed it frantically.
Their bodies trembled violently, their faces were contorted, and their eyes were unfocused, as if they were possessed, a terrifying and nauseating sight.
In an instant, Chu Yao realized what these people were doing gathered here.
Chu Yao subconsciously turned her head to look at the man who was following behind her and monitoring her. She heard others call him Da Niu, and he was one of Xu Penggang's men.
Clearly, that man had also seen what the group was doing, but he showed no reaction. His eyes were calm and indifferent, as if he had just seen a group of people gathered there smoking and chatting.
It seemed that everyone in the manor, except for Chu Yao, was used to the idea of people gathering to use drugs, and had taken it for granted.
Her shock seemed out of place in this environment, making her appear like an oddball.
Chu Yao turned over and looked at the empty bed on the other side; Jiang Zheng had not yet returned.
For the past few days, Jiang Zheng has come back every night to have dinner with Xu Penggang, and usually doesn't go out again.
However, today was an exception. Chu Yao didn't see him all day. When she asked Da Niu, he told her, "Brother Zheng went out to the manor to run some errands today."
Can he go out now?
No one said it outright, but based on the details Chu Yao observed, although Jiang Zheng was respected here, his freedom of movement was actually restricted.
However, compared to her, the restrictions placed on him were not made public.
Drug addicts were everywhere in the manor. Drugs seemed to be readily available to them, so it was obvious what kind of business Xu Penggang was secretly involved in.
So, what about him?
Was he helping Xu Penggang traffic drugs?
If that's all there is to it, then why would he carry a high concentration of apomorphine injections with him? It's as if he had anticipated this and was preparing for any eventuality.
And why would he be willing to help her repeatedly?
This was all too strange. A faint sound came from the living room—the sound of shoes stepping on the carpet, very softly, as if the owner was deliberately making their footsteps quiet.
Chu Yao's thoughts were interrupted by a faint sound outside the door. Her attention was diverted, and she quickly threw off the covers and got out of bed.
The moment she turned on the living room light, she saw the man hunched over, reaching for the first-aid kit in the sofa cabinet.
The moment the light came on, Jiang Zheng looked over, his face showing a hint of guilt, like a thief caught red-handed breaking and entering.
But in an instant, he turned his head, calmly took out a first-aid kit and placed it on the coffee table, casually saying, "Still not asleep so late?"
Chu Yao walked over and said, "Let me do it."
“No need,” Jiang Zheng glanced at her attire. “You’re already asleep, so don’t get out of bed. It’s chilly at night.”
Chu Yao remained unmoved, her hand already on the lid of the medical kit, when she heard the man's tone darken and command, "Go get dressed."
Chu Yao pursed her lips, and the medical kit she was touching was snatched away by him. After a moment of silence, she turned around and went back to her room to put on her coat.
When he came out again, the man had already removed the gauze from his body. He was always quick and decisive, showing no mercy to his wounds.
Once, Chu Yao was so sound asleep that she woke up in the middle of the night and had the misfortune of witnessing a man changing her dressing.
A few cotton swabs are clenched together, some ointment is applied to the tip, and they are pressed against the wound and wiped a couple of times. That's it.
There was absolutely no care or consideration involved; it was even more crude and ruthless than a bricklayer painting a wall.
Chu Yao approached and, without saying a word, snatched the cotton swab from his hand.
In fact, his attitude towards her was hardly gentle or friendly most of the time, which made his occasional acts of kindness seem all the more strange.
But for some reason, Chu Yao started to become less afraid of him.
As if deep inside, a feeling was at play—this man would never hurt her, and this feeling was growing stronger, even though she couldn't give any plausible reason.
A trust that is almost absurd.
