Chapter 155 Returning to the Team After the Deadline

Chapter 155 Returning to the Team After the Deadline
Lying in bed all night, tossing and turning, Meng Youyou still felt something was very wrong.

Less than a week after his grandmother passed away, his grandson actually had the mind to go gambling.

After getting up in the morning, Meng Youyou went straight to the infirmary.

As soon as she entered, she saw Dr. Cai again. Meng Youyou greeted him, "Dr. Cai, why are you on duty again today?"

"Pan Tong is about to give birth and is starting her maternity leave today. And Chu Yao hasn't returned to the team yet either." Dr. Cai is the deputy director of the medical office. He is senior and holds a high position, so he usually addresses his subordinates by their full names.

Meng Youyou frowned and quickly asked, "Hasn't Chu Yao returned yet?"

"Yes, I've already returned to the team after the deadline, and there's been no news from them about extending my leave."

I plan to wait another morning to see if they can return. If they haven't returned by then and I can't contact them, I'll have to report it to the director and have them contact the local village committee.

Meng Youyou thought for a moment and then said, "Do you know Chu Yao's address? I'm off today and have some free time. I'll go there in case something comes up at home and keeps me from coming."

……

To facilitate military personnel's visits to relatives, business trips, and family visits, military barracks have set up shuttle buses connecting to urban transportation hubs, such as train stations and long-distance bus stations.

Normally, military shuttle buses run three times a day, in the morning, noon, and evening. During special periods, the frequency of departures may be increased depending on the specific circumstances.

Meng Youyou took a military shuttle bus, then a long-distance bus, and then a rural bus. After going around in circles and asking around, she finally found the home address listed in her file – Chujia Village, Shitang Town, Xiangyang County, Fanzhou City.

A woman wearing a dark blue coarse cotton-padded jacket was pointing the way to Meng Youyou, but she was speaking in the local dialect: "Just keep going straight ahead, and when you see the road fork, turn left at an angle. There's a place with a black wooden stake standing there, that's it."

To Meng Youyou, these words sounded like gibberish; she was willing but unable to understand a single word.

The woman continued gesturing with her hands and feet, when suddenly her eyes lit up. She pointed to a young man who came out of a small shop not far away and said to Meng Youyou, "That Han guy is Chu Yao's younger brother, oh boy."

Although Meng Youyou still didn't quite understand what the woman was saying, she saw Chu Yaozu the moment he walked out of the convenience store with a pack of cigarettes he had just bought.

She could basically guess what the woman meant, and Meng Youyou turned to thank her, saying, "Thank you, Auntie, I understand."

After leaving the convenience store, Chu Yaozu walked straight along the village road, completely unaware of Meng Youyou following behind him.

Meng Youyou didn't plan to call him over beforehand and reveal her identity and purpose. She couldn't explain why, but she had never actually met Chu Yaozu before, yet she had a very bad impression of him.

It was almost lunchtime, and she guessed that Chu Yaozu was heading home. She planned to follow him all the way to Chu Yao's house, and then decide what to do after she met Chu Yao. Before that, she didn't want to have any contact with this person.

Meng Youyou watched as Chu Yaozu walked into a house. The house looked much the same as the other farmhouses around it, nothing special. It had red brick walls, no decoration, and a black tile roof. There was a pigsty with a straw roof on the side of the house.

What puzzled Meng Youyou was that there was neither a white banner nor white paper pasted on the door of this house.

However, she was unsure about local customs regarding how long funeral decorations are typically kept after a loved one's death.

To be on the safe side, Meng Youyou chose a neighbor to inquire about the situation. An elderly man with silver hair, wearing a dark green Lei Feng hat, sat in the sun on a bamboo recliner by the door, squinting his eyes.

Meng Youyou approached and asked, "Grandpa, is the family next door Chu Yao's?"

Grandpa heard the sound, slowly opened his eyes, then squinted and stared intently at Meng Youyou's face. "Hey, who is this? I've never seen her before."

Meng Youyou guessed what he meant and replied with a smile, "I'm Chu Yao's colleague. She hasn't returned to the team after taking leave, so I came to find her."

Upon hearing this, Grandpa's expression immediately turned serious, and he waved his hand, saying, "Chu Yao is not someone who can be late for a baby."

Perhaps because Meng Youyou always spoke Mandarin and had an elegant demeanor, her grandfather realized she might not understand the local dialect, and thus switched to his broken Mandarin.

Although not standard, it was enough for Meng Youyou to understand the general meaning. Meng Youyou explained, "Don't worry, she has some family matters to attend to. We'll handle this as a special case. As long as she goes back and explains the situation to the organization, there won't be any particularly serious consequences if there are extenuating circumstances."

After thinking for two seconds, Meng Youyou decided to use a safer way of asking: "Grandpa, Chu Yao asked for leave because her younger brother went to the army and said that Grandma was having health problems. How is she now?"

Meng Youyou chose her words carefully, even though she had heard Chu Yao repeat his brother's words that day, describing a much more serious situation, basically one where he was on the verge of death.

Grandpa sighed, "They're all old, that's how it is. He was sent to the hospital and has been there for several days and hasn't come back yet."

This answer was somewhat unexpected for Meng Youyou; it seemed that her grandmother's health was better than she had anticipated.

After some conversation, Meng Youyou had a general understanding of Chu Yao's family situation.

Since Grandma is not dead, it doesn't seem so unreasonable for Chu Yaozu to leisurely go gambling.

After all, she couldn't have too many expectations of such an idle and wasteful son.

When Meng Youyou arrived at Chu Yao's house and knocked on the door, Liu Xiue was complaining to Chu Yaozu about her father: "Your father is really something. Your grandmother is so old. Why is it necessary to spend so much money and send her to the hospital? It's just a waste of money. What's the use of spending this money? Oh dear."

Her voice was very loud, and at first it even drowned out the sound of Meng Youyou knocking on the door.

Liu Xiu'e became more and more agitated as she spoke: "Your grandmother is really something, the older she gets, the less clear-headed she becomes. That day she insisted on stopping me. She knows perfectly well that Chu Yao isn't her son's biological child at all. If she hadn't interfered, would I have been accidentally pushed and fallen so hard, suffering all this pain..."

Meng Youyou stood at the door and could tell that the tone of those words was unfriendly, like complaints, but she couldn't understand the content of their words. She just thought it was normal for a family to quarrel, so she didn't think much of it.

Meng Youyou knocked harder and called out, "Hello!"

Upon hearing this, Liu Xiue and Chu Yaozu were both startled. They looked at each other, their eyes filled with the same alarm and worry.

Perhaps out of a sense of dread, having done something wrong, the two were far away in the back room, and before they even saw the visitor's face, they heard a clear, melodious female voice speaking standard Mandarin, and immediately sensed that something was terribly wrong.

They had a feeling that this person was coming for Chu Yao.
