Chapter 136 Coaxing (Part 1)

After parking the car, Xiao Li was quick-witted. He called out for permission and, after receiving approval from a battalion commander, abandoned the car and fled without hesitation.

After all, the eerie atmosphere in the car along the way made him very uneasy. Usually, when he picked up and dropped off translator Meng, she was always cheerful and talkative. She would chat with him about interesting things inside and outside the camp, and share what she had seen and heard during her substitute teaching that day.

However, on the way back, translator Meng didn't say a single word.

These days, few soldiers are pushovers; they all possess the basic skills of being observant and attentive to their surroundings.

Li, who seemed focused on driving, actually noticed several times that Meng, the translator in the passenger seat, was stealing glances at their battalion commander. Her gaze... was complicated. Was she a little guilty? Or a little ingratiating?

But their battalion commander sat in the back row with his eyes lowered and his face frosty the whole time, without any reaction.

Most importantly, Xiao Li sensed something akin to an affair from their one-sided, barely interactive communication.

Meng Youyou watched Xiao Li jog away until he disappeared from sight. No longer willing to sit idly by and wait for her fate, she immediately took action as well.

She pushed open the car door and stepped out of the passenger seat. At this time, the sky was slightly dark, with the orange afterglow in the west and the nascent night sky in the east locked in a silent battle, neither able to gain the upper hand for a moment.

Meng Youyou opened the back door of the car, bent down and climbed in.

Huo Qingshan initially sat alone in the middle of the back row. After Meng Youyou got on the bus from the side, he showed no intention of moving, so Meng Youyou had no choice but to sit right next to him.

After Meng Youyou sat down, she went straight to take the man's hand, which was resting on his knee. The man still didn't react and just let her hold his hand, keeping his neck stiff and not turning his head to look at her, without moving.

The lighting inside the car was poor, but the man's profile, though hidden in the dim light, was still clearly defined and well-proportioned.

Her lips were slightly pursed, a subtle detail that Meng Youyou noticed.

Meng Youyou stared at him quietly for a few seconds, then smiled and leaned closer with her small, fair face. When she spoke, her tone was unusually soft and sweet: "I haven't seen you for so many days, and you're willing to put on such a stern face for me?" As soon as she finished speaking, the man glanced at her sideways, his eyes very indifferent, and quickly looked away without replying.

Seeing this, Meng Youyou was not discouraged and intensified her offensive. She stretched out the hand that wasn't holding his and poked the man's chin with her index finger, saying with a charming expression, "Commander Huo, you're so heartless!"

The tone was exaggerated and coquettish.

He reached out and grasped her free hand, holding it in his palm. He lowered his head and gently stroked the skin on the back of her fingers, his eyes darkening as he pondered something.

But he still didn't say anything.

Still no luck. Meng Youyou sighed inwardly and simply stopped talking, resting her head on the man's shoulder.

For a long time afterward, neither of them spoke, and the room was silent.

The long silence, the other party's cold and unresponsive attitude, the tense nerves that had been stretched all day, and the constant anxiety of making a mistake gradually intertwined, like a surging wave crashing towards Meng Youyou.

Suddenly I felt wronged.

Meng Youyou sniffed and said in a muffled voice, "Don't do this."

When she spoke again, her voice was tinged with a hint of aggrieved sobs.

As soon as the words were uttered, the man finally reacted, pulling her into a tight embrace. At the same time, he buried his face in her neck, inhaling the scent he longed for.

"Are you scared?" the man asked, his first words of the day.

Meng Youyou reached out and slowly wrapped her arms around his waist, hugging him back, and softly hummed in agreement.
