Chapter 21 Divide the spoils

When Zhao Xiaoxiu and the Meng brothers were searching in the temple.

Zhao Gang, who was burning corpses in front of the fire, secretly stretched out a tiny tentacle, ignoring the burning flames, and touched Shanyuan's brain.

Memories of Shanyuan flooded in instantly, and his entire life, along with those long-forgotten memories, were all "seen" by Zhao Gang.

The little boy was born in a little-known northern town and grew up with the love and encouragement of his parents and family.

At the age of eighteen, he was successfully admitted to university and became a student majoring in mechanical engineering. After graduation, he worked in a state-owned enterprise manufacturing agricultural machinery in the local provincial capital. After ten years of hard work, he became the chief engineer.

During this period, he married a girl who worked in the same factory and had a child. The couple looked forward to giving birth to the fruit of their love.

The birth of a daughter brought a lot of happiness and troubles to this small family.

Mothers have better career prospects, and men give up opportunities for promotion and stay at home.

The new dad didn’t know how to raise a child, so he started from scratch. Gradually, he took care of the child’s meals, studies, hobbies, handicrafts, etc.

In the summer when the child was six years old, the family of three traveled to Huangshan so that their daughter could enjoy freedom again before entering elementary school.

The virus broke out quickly, and my mother was pushed, trampled and suffocated to death by the chaotic crowd.

The father and daughter watched their mother struggle from death and turn into an inhuman ghost. In despair, they had no choice but to give up on their mother and continue to escape.

The man took his daughter and fled to the temple where all the monks had left. He found the little monkey locked in a small room by the abbot and rescued it.

In the early days of the disaster, the vegetable fields grown by the monks in the temple provided food for the father and daughter, allowing them to survive.

But one unexpected night, the mutant pine suddenly attacked, and the six-year-old daughter died on the spot.

The man was in pain and anger, and was about to commit suicide, but the evolved macaque brought back his daughter's scarred body.

A man who had already lost his wife could not afford to lose his daughter again, so he felt somewhat fortunate when he knew that his daughter would become a ghost.

From then on, a man, a monkey and a ghost lived in this temple.

The daughter needs flesh and blood, and the man has been feeding his daughter with his own flesh.

But the little ghost was not satisfied and almost broke free from the restraints and escaped from the small dark room several times.

After the initial catastrophe, the survivors finally got a moment of respite, and from time to time someone would go up the mountain to look for food or hunt mutated plants and animals.

The man had no choice but to reach out to his compatriots, offering to repay the favor, and asked the human-like little monkey to trick the people up the mountain.

In order to make himself feel less guilty about killing people, he would always take out the evolved food to induce their greed and malice.

In this way, he could kill them with a clear conscience and satisfy his daughter's blood and flesh desires.

The remaining scraps, or the "food" that my daughter couldn't finish in one go, would be thrown under the pine tree at the door, which would clean up all traces.

This routine has never failed in the past thirteen years.

Until this time - he met someone who could still hold on to his bottom line in the apocalypse.

Zhao Gang read the man’s memories before his death. He felt relieved and the family of three could finally be reunited.

Zhao Gang couldn't understand this self-deceiving "reunion". He found that humans always tried to deceive their own brains and made some meaningless struggles.

However, this person's memory did allow him to learn a lot.

For example, the correct way to raise a little girl.

It turns out that the cub not only needs to keep her well-fed, but also needs to care about her mental state.

Tell her stories, let her wear beautiful clothes, play with interesting toys, and interact and play with children of the same age. Only then can she grow up to be a person with a sound personality under the care of her father. Zhao Gang nodded to himself, I have learned it!
"father!"

The cub's excited voice sounded behind him.

Zhao Gang looked back and saw that the searching trio had found out all the belongings that Shanyuan had hidden.

There were clothes and toys, a bottle of expired candy, a satellite phone, two solar flashlights, a packet of sleeping pills, a tent, and the rest included sheets, quilts, pots and pans.

These things piled up into a small hill behind Zhao Xiaoxiu.

But she had no interest in these things. She held a large ceramic jar in her hand and said with a smile: "Dad, look, we found so many evolutionary fruit and vegetable seeds!"

Boss Meng then said that all the spoils belonged to them and their daughter, and he and the second brother only wanted a solar-powered flashlight.

After all, if Gangzi and Xiaoxiu hadn’t arrived in time today, they would both have lost their lives.

Before today, Zhao Gang actually didn't care about these supplies.

Because he had no clothes or bedding, he could hide the cub inside his body, keeping it warm and comfortable.

What about candy and vegetable seeds? He didn't think they could provide much energy to the cub. They were not as good as his tentacles.

But now that Zhao Gang has read Shanyuan’s memory, he no longer thinks so.

He walked over, patted his daughter's head, and praised her: "Xiaoxiu is amazing to find so many evolution seeds."

Zhao Xiaoxiu's eyes widened in surprise. "Dad, is your mouth filled with honey? Are you going to die if you talk like that?"

But who doesn’t like to hear compliments?

Zhao Xiaoxiu's eyes narrowed in surprise, and she laughed, "Hehe," "It's not that great, it's mainly due to Second Uncle Meng's efforts."

Meng Lao Er shook his head modestly, "No, no, it was Xiaoxiu who had sharp eyes and found the jar tied to the kitchen roof first. I just climbed up a ladder to take it down."

Zhao Gang selected bed sheets, quilts, children's clothes, toys, satellite phones and a solar flashlight from the spoils and put them into Shanyuan's large mountaineering backpack.

Then he transferred all the things in his old backpack over.

The jar containing the seeds was too heavy, so Zhao Gang found a cloth bag and motioned to Zhao Xiaoxiu to pour the seeds into it and stuff it into the backpack.

Carrying a bulging mountaineering bag in one hand and holding the happy cub in the other, she returned to the duty room.

It's late, the cub should go to bed, otherwise he won't grow taller.

The two Meng brothers looked at the remaining things, raised their heads and nodded heavily at the backs of the father and daughter, and selected the things they could use.

There are still two mutant hyenas to deal with when we go down the mountain tomorrow. They have injuries on their bodies. Although they are not fatal, their condition is indeed not good.

So even though they knew their mother loved those complete ceramic pots, pans, and utensils, the Meng brothers had no choice but to give up.

The two brothers first each chose a set of clothes to replace the tattered clothes covered in blood.

Then I packed another solar flashlight, the tent, and three clean sheets.

After hesitating for a while, he packed up the packet of drugs and expired candy.

The candy was in a glass bottle and was ten years past its expiration date, but it was probably safe to eat and I should be able to exchange it for some points.

Seeing the fire in the backyard go out, the Meng brothers returned to the Buddhist temple and fell asleep in a daze wrapped in the quilts they had taken out earlier.
