Gundam, driving a mass-produced machine will change the world
Chapter 306 Will Cloned Brains Dream of Electronic Systems?
The brain—this is the Murasame Research Institute's current answer to the "new humans." In their view, these so-called new humans are actually people whose brains have been further developed, giving them a greater ability to adapt to the universe and a terrifying insight.
Just like Amakusa, who was produced a century after UC, this mobile suit equipped with Amuro's bio-cloned brain showed amazing performance and almost single-handedly defeated the attack launched by the Death Vanguard.
This argument isn't really problematic. After all, the sensory waves emitted by New Humans when communicating with people or machines are themselves a type of brainwave. So it's perfectly normal for the Murasame Research Institute to focus its development on the brain.
Furthermore, cloning a complete Eli and cloning Eli's brain are politically diametrically opposed. The Basques naturally prioritize the brain-cloning project, which poses less of a threat to their own political image. The ethical controversies and power challenges that a complete clone might trigger are far greater than those of a single brain. Moreover, for the Basques, a brain fits the description of a "biological CPU"—possessing the sensory abilities of a new human while lacking autonomous consciousness, perfectly aligning with their pursuit of "complete control."
A machine equipped with a bio-CPU would be his ideal weapon. Not some supernatural new human, but a fully controlled brainwave emission device. Once combat data is imported, it can be deployed to the front lines. What a perfect weapon!
The project was proceeding as planned during the experimental phase. The cloned brain successfully emitted sensory waves when it came into contact with other enhanced humans in the research institute, and activated the Psycommu device.
Then came the natural progression of MS piloting training. During testing on models previously piloted by Eli, such as the GM, Riot Control GM, GM II, Ground Combat Gundam, and Gilai, it achieved evaluations comparable to the original. Ultimately, it was assessed as a key component capable of becoming Silver Raid.
Up until this point, both the Murasame Research Institute and the Basque Country were smug, believing they had the key to victory in their hands. The Basque Country had even begun planning the mass production of bio-CPUs, attempting to use this method to allow the Titans to surpass Ond Tek in high-end combat power.
However, after the qualified brain entered the Silver Thunder, it frequently malfunctioned. The Silver Thunder was such a massive machine that all its controls required the use of sensor waves to communicate in order for the pilot to operate it. But the brain, when operating the entire Silver Thunder, would experience insufficient sensor wave strength, becoming inadequate under high load.
This is why Silver Thunder has mostly remained idle in Sedan since its release. Engineers have tried various solutions: enhancing signal amplifiers, adding auxiliary sensors, and even adjusting the brain development program, but all with little success.
After quickly reviewing the information he had brought from the Murasame Research Institute, Eli closed his eyes and began to process what he knew.
Bio-CPU—it's a chilling term. Eli was no stranger to it; back in the One Year War, one of the "core components" of the EXAM system installed in the Blue Destiny series was a girl's "soul."
Even systems like the Hades system in Pale Knight, which forcibly overclocks the pilot's brain; the Demon Blade system on the Strike GM, which uses wave technology to promote the transformation of Newtypes; and the ALICE system on the S Gundam, which mimics human personalities and can take away the pilot's control at any time.
These special systems also tend to transform pilots into subservient to the machine, which, in a sense, can be seen as creating biological CPUs. Humanity seems to be repeating the same mistakes in its pursuit of power.
"What should we do next? Should we take action against the Murasame Research Institute?"
"I really want to... but it's not the right time now."
The Murasame Research Institute must have already backed up these data, and destroying the Murasame Research Institute now will not yield any greater returns in the short term.
"Karaba's current strength is only enough to organize one large-scale attack at most; it shouldn't be wasted on this research institute."
He sighed, put down the documents in his hand, and didn't feel any resentment because the Murasame Research Institute had set its sights on him.
Strangely enough, it seems that the Titans chose the same mobile suits it had previously piloted as its brain to ensure that the brain could perform combat as well as itself during the experimental phase. And those mobile suits had one thing in common: they were all mass-produced models.
The brain that experienced insufficient brainwave intensity only appeared on the Silver Lightning... Could it be that the brain also possesses the characteristics granted by the system?
Eli was more concerned about this than launching an attack on the Murasame Research Institute.
"I came to Earth to consolidate my base, and I have now released my ideas through the Lu-Ou Chamber of Commerce, which can be considered as achieving my goal. Another goal is to find a way to force the Titans to engage in a strategic decisive battle with Ander Tek."
Eli hadn't forgotten why he'd come to Earth at this tense time. Earth's gravity, though uncomfortable, was the root of the war. Every battle in space ultimately stemmed from decisions and resources made on Earth.
"After I shared those future plans, a very interesting person contacted me."
-
"Nu Gundam, you've finally come to my side."
Amuro watched as the transport crate was pushed into the hangar. The mobile suit pulled out of it was now lying flat on the maintenance rack. This mobile suit, with its blue-purple and white paint scheme, was Amuro's new machine. Its lines were smooth and elegant, and although it lacked excessive ornamentation, it exuded an inner sense of power.
"Looking at the machine itself, I don't think there's anything particularly outstanding about it. Although it looks very good."
Captain Otto was also in the hangar, standing with Amuro, both looking at the Nu Gundam, whose armor was still secured with straps. Indeed, compared to the various strange mobile suits of this era, the Nu Gundam's body looked completely natural, clearly a direct descendant of the original Gundam.
"The Nu Gundam isn't just for looking good!"
Just as Captain Otto was saying this, a pleasant female voice interrupted him.
"It has the power to bring about miracles," Eli said.
Her tone was full of pride, and every word she spoke was firm and resounding.
Captain Otto, who had initially intended to retort, immediately fell silent upon hearing Eli's assessment of the Nu Gundam. He then noticed that the speaker was Christina, the designer of the Nu Gundam. He adjusted his hat brim, coughed lightly, and turned to float away, as if he had some important business to attend to.
"Captain Otto is quite reliable in battle, but he's always a bit unreliable in ordinary times."
Amuro wasn't surprised by the visitor. He simply watched Otto disappear behind the automatically closing door and then spoke to Christina to explain. His gaze never left the Nu Gundam, as if he were completely captivated by the machine.
"I know, that's why he gets along well with everyone on the ship, right?"
Christina chuckled softly and floated to Amuro's side. "I think everyone's used to him like this."
Amuro and Christina exchanged a smile, then turned back to look at the Nu Gundam below. The maintenance crew was busy at work, their figures moving back and forth around the mobile suit like a swarm of busy worker bees around a hive.
At that moment, the maintenance crew was removing the various securing straps from its body. After confirming that the armor had not been misaligned during transport, they began inspecting the internal structure. Amuro could hear the sounds of tools and the engineers' concise, professional conversations below; these familiar sounds gave him a strange sense of reassurance.
For a long time, the two remained silent. Logically, Amuro should have personally participated in the inspection of the Nu Gundam to familiarize himself with the machine, and Christina should have spent time explaining things to him. But sometimes, silence conveys more. They leaned against the railing, side by side, gazing at the Gundam.
"NT-X, it hasn't held you back, has it?"
As the Nu Gundam finally completed its inspection and slowly stood upright on the maintenance rack, Christina asked Amuro a question. Her voice was very soft, as if afraid of breaking the tranquility of the moment.
Amuro's gaze remained fixed on the Nu Gundam, his tone filled with emotion.
"No, it's an excellent machine. Sometimes I almost forget that it's been in service since the One Year War."
"That's good. I was initially worried that you might not be able to operate it well, but I was really overthinking it."
Christina was referring to the days before she and Amuro met.
"This time, the new machine will also become a reliable asset to you, just like the NT-X."
Christina made such a bold statement. The Nu Gundam, with its key joints all equipped with psycho-frames to enhance its reaction speed, is almost equivalent to the Founder Gundam after it received magnetic coating in the later stages of the One Year War, making it even more formidable.
The two looked at each other, their eyes filled with smiles. They trusted each other's abilities, a tacit understanding built up over years of fighting side by side.
"I hope it won't take another ten years."
"Anaheim next door is even planning to build machines that will last for a hundred years!"
Christina deliberately made a sullen face and tapped Amuro on the shoulder as she spoke.
At this moment, another transport box below opened, revealing a machine that looked seven or eight parts similar to the Nu Gundam.
Mass-produced Nu Gundam.
"I hope this machine will actually be mass-produced in the future."
"Perhaps it will be small-scale production, just like Gillette back then."
Christina rested her chin on her hand and glanced at Amuro beside her.
“Mr. Eli always prefers to drive mass-produced MS models. Sometimes he would rather drive a specialized mass-produced model than customize a high-performance machine for himself.”
This incident actually dealt a significant blow to the MS development department of the Augusta Research Institute. Having just been recruited by Andre Tec, they had planned to build a custom-designed mobile suit for Eli, but Eli refused. This led many to believe that Eli didn't trust them, creating a sense of widespread fear and insecurity.
"Perhaps it's just a personal habit."
Amuro shrugged. However, he actually knew roughly that Eli had a special reason for piloting the production model.
"A mass-produced Nu Gundam. Why don't you think Elie believes this machine can trigger a miracle? Does the number of psychoframes determine whether a miracle can occur?"
Christina suddenly exclaimed.
"That shouldn't be the case. Even if a machine is made entirely of a psycho-framework, without human mental involvement, I think it would be hard to call it a miracle no matter how many things it can do."
Amuro answered Christina in this way. He didn't know much about the psychoframework, but he roughly understood its function. Ultimately, it was a more powerful version of the Psycommu device, which couldn't function without the activation of the mind.
"Are you saying that Eli's spirit isn't enough to bring about a miracle?"
"How could that be? It's just that Eli didn't blindly believe in miracles."
Amuro's gaze fell upon the permission granted to Earth.
"He focuses more on human power, as if he wants to change the world without miracles."
Because Eli knew perfectly well that the miracles caused by Amuro and Char had not changed the world. (End of Chapter)
