Gundam, driving a mass-produced machine will change the world
Chapter 295 The Battle of Axis Part 1
Just as Sirocco captured Demeter and brought her aboard the Jupiter, which was veering off course from Axis, the Titans fleet, which was launching an attack directly at Axis itself, was advancing with unstoppable momentum!
Aside from the overall generational advantage in machine design, the most important factor was the large, spherical flashes of fire that appeared intermittently along the Titans' attack path.
That was the glow of a nuclear bomb.
"bombardment!"
The Titans commander roared, ordering each warship to assess the enemy data transmitted back by the mobile suits ahead and to launch a devastating nuclear attack on the large mobile suit clusters and the warships that came out to intercept them.
Therefore, Axis was completely unable to mount a decent offensive in this direction of the battlefield. Even the reinforcements that came from within Axis, which deployed the majority of their forces to this area, were of no use.
Each time a fireball explodes, it means that countless lives are lost.
This is exactly what the Titans wanted to see. Although it was a fleet, the Titans did not have enough personnel to control an entire asteroid fortress. Therefore, destroying the military forces of the fortress in the early stages, and even wiping out all military personnel, was the only way for this Titans force to control Axis with absolute terror after winning the battle.
This is how the Titans thought, and this is how they acted. With the aid of nuclear weapons, while Ond Tek was still fighting a defensive battle, they had already broken through to the surface of Axis!
Axis is destined to return to the Earth Sphere. The Jupiter, too, is destined to return. Therefore, capturing Axis would essentially give the Titans control of the Jupiter. In this scenario, Andre Tec would have been doing all the work for them!
With these thoughts in mind, Titans watched with anticipation as the large gate, successfully breached, opened.
So a squadron of several GM IIs and a few Cyclone Ian took the lead and charged in.
"boom!"
Then came several beams of light shooting out from the gate, followed by the sound of an explosion!
"No matter what, we can't let them into the gate. If it were the Titans, it wouldn't be surprising if they did something to Axis."
Inside the war room of Axis, Gremi Toto gritted his teeth and gave orders to his men. Long before, Gremi had ordered his personal guard to set up defenses at the gate in an attempt to slow the Titans' advance.
Only inside the asteroid could the Titans be prevented from using nuclear weapons. The humiliation of having to rely on the enemy's hesitation to create an environment barely enough for a fight to be won filled Gremy with indignation.
But out of responsibility for his own bloodline, Gremy remained calm and continued to control the overall situation.
"Your Highness, please come aboard the Endora."
Enzo, who had helped Gremi ascend to the position of commander of Axis, offered this advice. His magnificent Neo Zeon uniform remained impeccably neat even in this wartime setting, and he remained calm despite being at a great disadvantage.
"Why?"
"Just in case."
Gremy asked in a calm tone, and Enzo answered in an equally calm tone.
"Does this mean I should prepare to escape? But in this area, where can the Endora take me?"
The Zeon forces were able to withdraw from Abaoakong for two reasons: first, the Federation forces failed to encircle the Abaoakong fortress; and second, the Zeon rout was so chaotic that the Federation forces ultimately failed to stop everyone.
However, that requires scale. Given the current military strength of Neo Zeon and the Federation, pursuing a fleeing warship is naturally not difficult.
Besides, even if they escaped, where could they escape to? There was no place for the Zeon outside the Earth Sphere, and it would be even worse once they entered the Earth Sphere. Did they want to become space pirates like Nasima Kalahau, living like shadowy rats in the Reef Space Sphere?
The mention of this filled Gremy with resentment. He knew that Sima had betrayed Zeon and even become a member of the Und Tec. But considering her past history of fickleness, Gremy still tried to extend an olive branch to her.
Unexpectedly, the other side not only outwardly agreed to the promised benefits, but also launched the fastest attack. This was all that damned Sirocco's fault. Adhering to the principle of trusting those he employed, Gremy had placed considerable trust in that outstanding man, even allowing this former Federation officer to command a small portion of the Zeon army. Yet, he betrayed him without hesitation.
Gremy never expected that Sirocco, who went to negotiate with Sima that day, wouldn't even bother to mention his bargaining chips.
Enzo remained silent, and Gremi turned his attention to the screen in the command room, watching his personal guard fight against the Titans.
As the personal guard of the Zabi family, Gremi's men were the best of the best among the veterans of the One Year War, and their mobile suits were naturally brand new models that had just been put into production, rather than modified Warriors.
That was a new mass-produced model called Drayson, which, in terms of lineage, should be considered an evolution of the Dom. This meant that veterans of the One Year War wouldn't need much adaptation training and could quickly learn to operate it in combat. Meanwhile, the Royal Guard also included a few other mobile suits scattered throughout.
The flying spun blades forced back the Titans MS that was once again attempting to attack. This weapon, capable of automatically searching for and attacking its target, gave the Royal Guard soldiers a chance to catch their breath.
Even though the Drasen is a superior aircraft to the GM II, Axis only has these dozen or so Drasens left in the Royal Guard. They can hold out for now thanks to the favorable terrain, but once Axis's outer defenses are completely exhausted, the Titans, freed up, can easily destroy the Royal Guard's defensive line in a single charge.
No, even when the Titans' nine mobile suits in three squads charged in, they put immense pressure on the defensive line, allowing one Zek-Aion to break into the passage. The Zek-Aion was originally an excellent model developed by Zeon in the later stages of the One Year War. After optimization and improvement by the Titans, this model was a remarkably versatile mobile suit.
The Zeke-Aion that rushed out was a lightly armed model, and it reached a Drayson in the blink of an eye. This Titans soldier, who was also a veteran of the One Year War, mercilessly stabbed the Drayson through with his beam saber.
The next moment, the Cyk-Aion quickly retreated, escaping the onslaught of missiles. Looking up, it saw a Zsa standing at the back of the passage. This chubby aircraft was a heavy firepower machine, equipped with 66 missile launchers all over its body, making it practically a bomber.
The Federation veterans within Sek Ain quickly realized the extent of trouble the numerous Zsas scattered throughout the passage would cause them. After rapidly marking the locations of the discovered Zsas, Sek Ain retreated hastily, intending to take the intelligence on the troop distribution within the passage with him.
But soon, a beam of light came in pursuit, forcing the Cyclone to stop its retreat. It turned around and fired rapidly with its beam rifle, throwing the fuel canister mounted on its right shoulder in front of it, hoping to block a few beams and create more opportunities for its escape.
Looking back, he saw a machine that brought back memories of the One Year War. A Zaku!
The machine in front of me is a Zaku with a single-eyed monitor, power pipes on its head and abdomen, and a dark green paint job all over its body.
"Unlike the Zaku, this is the Zaku III!"
A young voice came from inside, and then the person came closer. The armor on the front waist rose up and actually formed a beam blade, which cut Sek Ion horizontally in half.
Lord Matthew Man
The others simultaneously paid tribute to the driver of the Zaku III.
"Set up your defenses, the real danger is yet to come."
The pilot of the Zaku III, Matthew Cero, gave the order to push the remains of Nasek Ain out of the tunnel and return to his position.
"Lord Hamman..."
Sitting in the Zaku III, which has a strong old principality feel, Matthew Man murmured the name of the leader of another faction who had been driven out.
At this moment, he had no room to express his own thoughts. These words were merely a slip of the tongue, born of his admiration under immense pressure. He had voluntarily undergone human enhancement surgery to provide more assistance to Lord Haman. However, he never expected that when he awoke, he would receive news of Haman's defection.
“Matthewman, we need to find a way to push out, otherwise our allies won’t be able to hold out for much longer.”
After Matthewman's mobile suit retreated back into the defensive line, another Zaku III placed its hand on his shoulder. This was the captain of the Royal Guard, Kanra Bakala.
"I know, but what should we do..."
The disadvantage in troop strength cannot be reversed by one or two high-performance mass-produced Zaku IIIs. If there were a machine fully equipped with MEGA particle cannons and also possessing a Psycommu device, with an engine power capable of simultaneously driving both types of weaponry, they would indeed have the confidence to launch a counterattack.
Unfortunately, although Axis had more resources and technology compared to the original history, the fourth-generation Dinosaur Machine had not yet appeared in the world. The only mobile suits that people knew could single-handedly change the course of a battle were the MAs.
"It's alright, the Great Zamru is already in the activation phase! Although those guys at the Newtype Research Institute are usually stingy, now is a critical moment for Neo Zeon's survival, and they're constantly sending out all sorts of strange mobile suits as reinforcements."
Matthewman didn't reply. He had never heard of this kind of information before, and therefore didn't know how to respond. But seeing Kanra's unwavering belief, Matthewman could only believe that the Great Zamru truly possessed the ability to change the course of the battle.
After all, the name clearly has a connection to the impressive MA Grand Zam from the One Year War, so perhaps it's believable. Matthew Mann wasn't entirely devoted to Grimm's rule, but he also wanted to survive, so naturally he held onto some hope.
"boom!"
The rock face was trembling, clearly indicating that a hidden gate was opening. Needless to say, it was the commotion caused by that Great Zamru.
"The Royal Guard should immediately advance to protect Grand Zamru!"
Gremy's order came through, and the guards huddled in the passage finally organized a counterattack. They quickly shot down several mobile suits blocking the passage and rushed into space!
Only then did they see what the outer perimeter of Axis looked like. Large amounts of Gaza-C wreckage floated there, almost forming a belt of rubble. Keep in mind, only 150 Gaza-Cs had been produced so far; how many had been scrapped now?
Before Matthewman could reach a conclusion on the question, his face was illuminated by the pale green beam of light.
"Everyone, assist in intercepting the missile swarm at Grand Zamru!"
Why were the previous troops so quickly overwhelmed? It was because the Federation was using nuclear weapons in the operation! Before the Royal Guard even appeared, the Great Zamru, with its MEGA particle cannons firing several salvos, had already shot down at least two nuclear missiles!
However, deploying this MA, a miniaturized version of the Mega Zam without significantly reducing its firepower, wasn't for missile interception. Neo Zeon hoped this mobile suit would, like the Mega Zam, destroy an entire fleet!
Therefore, when the Royal Guard's mobile suits set up a defensive line around the Great Zamur and focused on firing at incoming missiles, transforming into AA units, the Great Zamur would then have the spare capacity to launch an attack on the Titans' main fleet.
However, the Titans' leader, Shukiku, was quite astute; he had already begun evacuating the fleet when the Royal Guard rushed out. A salvo from the MEGA particle cannons failed to achieve the desired effect.
Even so, after multiple rounds of bombardment, the Titans' fleet was still bound to be defeated!
"But something's not right."
Gremy frowned. The number of nuclear weapons had been significantly reduced, or rather, the Titans had not attempted to launch a nuclear attack on Great Zamru at all; the SS had so far only been firing missiles.
With the Titans not yet demonstrating a higher level of MS/MA power, the only way to mount an effective counterattack is through nuclear weapons.
As the saying goes, a barking dog doesn't bite. Based on his intuition, Gremi judged that the Titans must be up to something, so he ordered that the surveillance around Axis be strengthened.
However, the feedback was clear—the Titans' fleet was retreating, and Andre Tek's fleet was covering the Jupiter's evacuation; neither side seemed capable of organizing a counterattack.
"Commander, an unidentified reflection has appeared in the direction of the Second Jupiter Flotilla!"
Just then, a report came from a direction that had been ignored by everyone since the start of the war.
"Solar system deployment complete." (End of Chapter)
