Chapter 5 Death Roll
Chapter 5 Death Roll
A biting wind howled, and the air was filled with an omnipresent chill.
Guo Mi shivered in her sleep, her nose twitching involuntarily, as if it had been frozen solid.
She tried to wake herself up, straining to open her eyes, but after a while, she realized that opening her eyes seemed to be an illusion; in reality, she was still asleep.
So I had no choice but to try opening my eyes again, but in the end I just experienced the same feeling again.
This restless sleep not only failed to give her enough rest, but actually made her even more tired.
She didn't know how much time had passed when a layer of warmth suddenly covered her cold nose. The warm feeling seemed to flow through her whole body. She had just comfortably stretched her limbs when she suddenly felt a sense of suffocation!
Guo Mi thought it was just a nightmare. She tried to struggle with her four paws but to no avail, until she was finally forced to wake up by suffocating!
The moment I opened my eyes, I was met with a pair of dark, beady eyes!
The other's little paws were still resting on her nose. When it realized she was awake, it was startled and quickly scrambled into a pile of dry grass nearby, burying its whole body in it, and quietly watching her along with another pair of beady eyes.
Guo Mi took a deep breath, stared wide-eyed at the vast sky, and finally sat up helplessly.
The bear's paws slammed heavily on the ground with a "thud," and the two pairs of small eyes in the grass couldn't help but shrink back again.
Guo Mi ignored them, just sitting on the snow licking her paws and occasionally shaking her fur, looking very relaxed.
After a while, the two creatures hiding in the grass finally couldn't wait any longer. After a long while, the slightly larger one carefully moved its body and struggled out of the withered grass, looking hesitant as it approached Guo Mi.
Guo Mi didn't say anything, just glanced at her.
The bear's fur stood on end instantly, its ears flared up, and its face looked much larger.
Seeing this, Guo Mi chuckled to herself.
These two bear cubs are relatively rare among polar bear cubs. Although male bears can weigh twice as much as female bears when they grow up, the older sister seems to be more independent and bolder than the timid and thin male cub.
The little bear that just covered her nose with its paw is also her older sister.
The little bear standing opposite Guo Mi looked up at the unfamiliar behemoth in front of him, and finally mustered up his courage to whisper:
"You promised us you would take us to find our mother."
She paused here, a hint of grievance in her voice:
"You slept for a long time..."
Hearing her words, Guo Mi suddenly realized that she had been sleeping for so long!
No wonder the two little ones were so scared, yet they still mustered the courage to wake her up.
Looking at the already bright, snowy landscape, the cold-blooded brown bear finally felt a pang of remorse, lowered its head, and whispered to the little furball in front of it:
"follow me."
As she spoke, she stood up first and moved toward the direction where the mother bear's carcass was located.
The little furball behind her barked at the haystack, and another little bear timidly poked its head out, then wriggled its bottom and trotted out, obediently following its sister.
Guo Mi's heavy paws landed on the snow, but she didn't miss the sound of the little bear's paws stomping on the snow behind her.
The size difference was too great, and even if she tried to slow down, the two little bears behind her still had to struggle with their short legs to keep up.
Guo Mi did not ask the two bear cubs their names.
There's a saying in the human world: a name represents a bond. From the moment you learn a name, that bond begins to form.
Without their mother, the two bear cubs have less than a one percent chance of surviving in the Arctic.
Guo Mi wasn't prepared to take on the responsibility of raising these two bear cubs, nor did she want to be heartbroken later. All she could do was try her best to avoid forming any connection with the two little guys, so that she and they would just be passersby in each other's lives.
As they got closer to the location of the mother bear's carcass, Guo Mi stopped.
This is a steep snow slope, and the body is at the bottom of the slope.
She peeked out from the slope, cautiously observing everything below.
The cold wind of the night had completely buried the traces left by the male bear, and even the carcass was half-sealed by ice and snow.
Guo Mi stretched her neck, her nose lightly touching the air, trying to catch the lingering scent.
Her sense of smell seemed to have been greatly diminished in this harsh environment. Apart from the bloody smell emanating from the corpse, all that remained for her was a chilling coldness, which forced her to spend more time sniffing.
Guo Mi was suddenly nudged on her hind leg. She looked down and realized that two little bears had somehow gathered behind her.
The tiny body hid between her hind legs, with its two little heads peeking out as it looked down.
Noticing that Guo Mi was watching them, the two little furballs realized that they had unknowingly crossed the safe distance and quickly hid back in fright.
Guo Mi didn't speak and silently looked away.
She's now pretty sure that only the three of them are left in this place, so it's safe for now. The only problem is how to get down.
Looking around, all I could see were steep snow slopes; to descend smoothly, I would have to take a long detour.
That would be such a waste of time.
Guo Mi slowly walked to the side of the platform and stretched out her paw towards the steep snow slope...
The first two steps were very successful; the furry claws dug deep into the snow and quickly regained their footing.
Guo Mi exhaled a puff of white mist from its nose, then carefully lifted each of its four paws and began to step down.
She took four steps, and everything went very smoothly. Just when she thought she could walk down the snow slope like this, something suddenly bumped into her bottom!
Guo Mi's breath hitched, and before she could react, her body tilted forward uncontrollably. In a flash, the bear head-down was buried in the snow!
Then came a death roll!
My body rolled down the snow slope like a ball!
She did consider using her claws to steady herself, but she soon discovered that the Arctic ice and snow were much softer than the solid ground.
Every time she thought she could stop, the bear's claws would unexpectedly grab nothing, and she would tumble all the way to the bottom!
Its fur was covered with a thick layer of snow. Guo Mi was dizzy from rolling around. It was supporting itself on one paw and was just about to sit up when it heard the sound of two more snowballs rolling around!
Then suddenly, something heavy weighed down on its head, and the little polar bear let out a startled cry!
Guo Mi sat up expressionlessly, with the teddy bear on her head, and casually raised her paw to stop the other white fur ball that was rolling around and about to crash into her.
Now there's nothing you can't understand, these two guys are the culprits!
The two bear cubs seemed to realize they had caused trouble. The one that Guo Mi had pinned down with her paws stared at her with its round eyes in terror, not daring to flail its four little paws.
As for the other end, although Guo Mi couldn't see her, she could clearly feel her trembling above her head.
Guo Mi sighed softly, raised her paw to gently pull the bear off her head, and then pointed her nose towards the location of the corpse:
“Your mother is there, go.”
