Chapter 203: Your face can really be used as a credit card
Wang Mang got up late and hadn't eaten breakfast; his stomach was already rumbling.
“Alright, I’ll follow your arrangements,” said Prince Lanling.
"Young master, modern clothes are different from those of the past. Take a look and see which one suits you. Change into one first."
Su Jiahe took out a pile of clothes from the wardrobe, and Lanling Wang entered the room. In a short while, he changed into a new outfit. Although it was just a simple top and trousers, he exuded the aura of someone walking the runway.
"Wow, you have the perfect figure for a clothes hanger!" Wang Mang exclaimed. "I'll never complain about clothes being ugly again."
Yingying had also changed into a little dress, holding Lanling Wang's hand like a pretty little ornament. Su Jiahe drove the car, taking the group out of the courtyard gate.
"Why are the carriages, roads, and houses in later times so different?" Lanling Wang looked around, his face showing both curiosity and surprise.
"Of course, after all, we are almost 1,500 years apart," Wang Mang said. "There are many good things in the future. Take your time to experience them."
In the blink of an eye, it was noon, and Su Jiahe brought Lanling King to the snack street as usual.
"Sir, don't look at this place as it's simple, the authentic food is all here."
"With smoke and fireworks everywhere and the world flourishing, how can it be called simple?" Lanling Wang walked on the street, looking around at the shops on both sides and the many foods he had never seen before on the stalls.
"Hey, look at that handsome guy." Two girls holding milk tea passed by, and one of them quietly pointed at Lanling King.
"Wow, that's really handsome." Another girl almost shouted out in excitement.
"Shh, keep your voice down, don't let anyone hear you."
Lanling Wang had heard the conversation between the two a long time ago, but he was used to it and walked away as if nothing had happened.
"Young Master, just tell me what you want to eat." Su Jiahe said.
"There are so many new and interesting things here that I'm overwhelmed. Why don't you recommend one to me, young lady?"
"Let me tell you, that Jianbing Guozi is incredibly delicious," Wang Mang said, "Tell the boss not to add ham or fried dough sticks. That's the most authentic way."
"Okay, that's it."
Lanling Wang walked up to the pancake stall and said gently, "Shopkeeper, give me one, but no... the ham and fried dough sticks."
The pancake stall owner was a woman in her thirties. She was looking down at her phone when she heard someone coming in. She quickly looked up and met Lanling Wang's face. She was stunned for a few seconds.
"Shopkeeper, could I have one?" Lanling Wang repeated when the shopkeeper didn't answer.
"Okay, okay!" The boss suddenly snapped out of his daze, quickly picked up a spoon, scooped up a large spoonful of egg mixture, and skillfully spread it on the griddle. In no time, a round and large pancake was formed.
"What kind of craftsmanship is this? It's amazing," Lanling Wang exclaimed softly.
Hearing Lanling Wang praise his skills, the owner beamed with joy and added an extra serving of each of lettuce, crispy pancakes, fried dough sticks, spicy strips, and pork tenderloin to his stall, along with two hams.
"Boss, we just said we wouldn't add it," Su Jiahe immediately reminded him.
"Just pay the original price, these are all free gifts." The shopkeeper said, while secretly glancing at Lanling Wang.
"It's not about the money, we just want the ones without any fillings." Su Jiahe took the thick pancake covered with various side dishes, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
"Oh, I see. Then please wait a little longer while I make another one." "No need for that, this one is fine." Lanling Wang was about to stop the vendor, but the vendor had already deftly poured the egg mixture onto the griddle. A moment later, the second plain pancake was ready.
"This is also a gift from me, you only need to pay for one."
"Thank you, shopkeeper." Lanling Wang subconsciously reached for his money in his sleeve, only to remember that he had just changed his clothes.
"I'll pay." Su Jiahe scanned the payment code and paid for two pancakes according to the price list.
"I told you, it was a gift for you." The boss seemed rather unhappy when he heard the payment notification.
“There’s no need for that. It’s not easy for you to run a business.” After saying that, Su Jiahe quickly led Lanling Wang away, afraid that the boss would give away the entire stall for free.
"The shopkeepers of later generations are really generous. Won't they lose money?" Lanling Wang said incredulously.
“She’s very generous to you. When I buy pancakes, she’s more calculating than anyone else.” Wang Mang gave a wry smile.
The aroma of the pancakes was irresistible, and Lanling Wang couldn't resist. He disregarded his image and took a small bite while walking. He felt the warm and soft pancakes melt on his tongue, accompanied by the aroma of the fermented bean sauce, which lingered in his mouth for a long time.
"Such delicious food exists in the human world!" Lanling Wang exclaimed in amazement.
“There are still many delicious foods ahead,” Wang Mang said. “Let me tell you, that place’s twisted dough sticks are the best in Bohai City, especially when they’re fresh out of the fryer, they’re so crispy and crunchy.”
Lanling Wang had never seen twisted dough sticks before, and found their shape particularly peculiar. Out of curiosity, he walked up to the stall to take a look.
"Brother, want some twisted dough sticks?" The stall owner immediately put down his work when he saw Lanling Wang.
"Two, please, freshly made," Su Jiahe said from the side.
"No problem, but you'll have to wait a bit. As soon as this batch comes out of the oven, I'll pack it for you. I guarantee it will be super crispy and super delicious."
After the vendor finished speaking, he picked up the dough and kneaded it rapidly, almost causing sparks to fly off the work surface. Once the dough was kneaded, he stretched it into a long strip, deftly folded it in half, twisted it a few times, and placed it in the oil. In just a few minutes, a golden-brown twisted dough stick was born.
"Sorry to keep you waiting." The stall owner stuffed a few large twisted dough sticks into a brown paper bag and handed it to Lanling Wang.
"Boss, we only want two, this is too much," Su Jiahe said.
"The rest are all free for you. Come again soon!" the stall owner said, smiling at Lanling Wang.
"Okay, thank you." Su Jiahe quickly pulled on Lanling Wang's sleeve and left.
The woman selling pancakes was one thing, but the stall owner selling fried dough twists was a dark-skinned, overweight man in his forties, which Su Jiahe couldn't tolerate.
“As long as you stand there, the boss will give you freebies. Looks like your face really can be used as a credit card.” Wang Mang said, pulling out a large twisted dough stick and taking a bite.
Under the watchful eyes of countless pedestrians and stall owners, the group finally finished exploring the food street.
"Is the young master full?" Su Jiahe asked.
"I'm full, thank you all for your hospitality." Lanling Wang patted his stomach, feeling a bit stuffed.
"Everyone gave us so many things today. Next time you go shopping, take your brother with you." Yingying playfully grabbed Lanling Wang's hand.
"What a lovely little girl!" Lanling Wang reached out his other hand and touched Yingying's face.
"Children get such good treatment," Su Jiahe thought, wishing she could go back to being seven years old.
