Chapter 682 I Can Never Rival the Emperor
Chapter 682 I Can Never Rival the Emperor
The wisdom revealed within the Blood Stack sent chills down Fabius Bayer's spine.
His fingers trembled slightly as he stared in disbelief at the power seeping from those divine gene sequences.
At this moment, Fabius Bayer finally solved the mystery in his heart.
Why is it that the Primarchs He clones are genetically and even have identical memories to the original Primarch, yet they can never match the original Primarch?
The physical body is not everything of the original. Fabius looked at the power seeping from the Blood Stack.
The Blood Stacks not only store the sequences of the twenty-one Primarchs, but also samples of twenty powers from the Warp.
Fabius extracted a trace of it.
Like fire, like ice, like a howling pack of wolves, like a blizzard in the north, like a giant sea monster in the deep sea, like a molten giant from the depths of the earth, like the king of the dead leading the charge in a wild autumn hunt.
It is a primitive and wild ideology, an epitome of the world of ice, fire, and behemoths, and a fascinating experiment in the reconstruction of ancient myths during the Golden Age.
Fabius vaguely saw some ancient memories, of psionicists and researchers from the Golden Age standing on a desolate planet covered in ice and snow.
On this planet, they reconstructed ancient myths, awakening in all living beings the primal worship of natural phenomena such as ice and fire, storms and mountains, wild beasts and thunder, and drawing that power from the subspace.
then
Fabius watched the humans let out a savage scream, seeing manes grow on their bodies, claws sprout from their limbs, and they transform into wild wolves on the snow.
He saw gods born in the heavens, raising their goblets and laughing wildly; he watched behemoths emerge from the seas, and ghosts sprout from the earth; the icy winds froze the World Sea, sweeping towards the Sea of Stars and the Sea of Souls.
But suddenly, a traveler draped in a gray-brown robe, standing in the cold, appeared on the snowfield. A magnificent spiritual power emanated from him, sealing off the entire planet and confining the icy wind within, transforming it into a cage and a prison.
"This place is a cage for wolves," the traveler declared, before disappearing into the cold wind.
No human witnessed this scene, but the cold wind never forgot, the mountains never forgot, the wolf pack never forgot. The planet is the legend, and the legend records everything. The traveler has his own place in mythology, and his name is often heard in the blizzard: "All Father".
Fabius felt a tingling sensation in his nerves and a throbbing in his head. His mind quickly grasped what he had just witnessed.
An out-of-control experiment of the Golden Age, something descended from the Warp, that traveler. "The All-Father," or rather the Emperor, restrained that out-of-control entity on the land of Fenris.
Fabius stared at the twenty subspace samples residing within the Primarch's genetic sequence.
The physical body is merely a vessel; what truly matters is the warp. Long before the Primarchs were born into the real universe, they already existed in the warp.
They are a chaotic storm, primal tendencies and desires, never tamed, never truly born, but the emperor restrained them, sent them into flesh and blood, put on the mask called human, and endowed them with intellect.
Those superstitious mortals called the Primarch a demigod, and Fabius often mocked them, but now it seems that there is some truth in the superstition.
In a sense—even if Fabius was unwilling to admit it—the Primarch was God.
The more Fabius studied the Blood Stack, the more astonished he became by the Emperor's audacity, madness, wisdom, and extraordinary creativity. In the process, Fabius also vaguely glimpsed things he had never seen before.
He saw threads, like spiderwebs, converging from all parts of the ship and from among the stars, swirling around him.
Each of those threads connects to a new human being created by Fabius; their thoughts, their emotions, their beliefs all converge on Fabius.
Fabius turned his head slightly, looking behind him and at his own projection in the highest heavens.
He saw the enormous cocoon, which had grown from the withering disease spread by the Selena Genetic Cult on the moon, a mixture of the faith of the new humans and Fabius's creations in him.
"The deformed father," is what Fabius's creations call this thing, believing it to be the essence of Fabius.
Fabius suddenly realized that He was gradually growing into a form similar to the Primarch before His birth, only much weaker.
However, he can still use the technology in the Blood Stack to reshape himself, allowing himself to be reborn in a form close to the Primarch, and he can become the new Primarch.
A slight tremor followed, and a feeling of falling and weightlessness enveloped Fabius Bayer simultaneously. The cocoon suspended above Fabius's body also drew closer to him in an instant.
Fabius knew that just moments ago, he and the ship had crossed the veil between reality and the warp, entering the warp.
This was commonplace; Fabius Bayer had long been accustomed to subspace travel over millennia.
But this time, Fabius gently put down the experimental equipment in his hands.
He sensed something was wrong.
It's so quiet, so incredibly quiet. How can the warp be so quiet?
It was as if he had not entered a turbulent subspace, but rather was immersed in a pitch-black shadow.
Bayer's expression turned slightly serious. He walked out of his laboratory and into the ship's corridor.
An eerie silence hung over the ship; almost no sound could be heard, not even the whirring of machinery or the footsteps of Fabius's creations.
Fabius cautiously approached the ship's observation window.
Outside the window, the bubbles in the Geller force field were flickering and twisting wildly, as if desperately resisting something from the outside world.
But outside the Geller force field, there is nothing.
There were no surging waves in the highest heavens, no eerie lights, no twisted wills, only darkness, profound darkness, and utter shadows.
Fabius stared at the shadow; he heard it.
It wasn't silent all around; it was just that all sounds were drowned out by the howling of the shadows.
It was a ravenous, greedy, frenzied, and twisted roar; he craved to eat, craved to devour everything in the world.
He roared, he screamed, he relentlessly tore at the Geller Engine with his claws, trying to devour the blood from the Blood Stack and seize the genetic sequence.
He is the shadow of the warp, he is the will of the hive.
Fabius's breath almost stopped; his ship had actually sailed directly into the shadows of the warp, crashing head-on into the Hive Will.
How could this be? Fabius's will faltered.
With a thought, he connected with his ship, and as he expected, the warp engine was out of control. Melusin... Melusin had clearly gone to check the warp and Geller engines, where was she?
Fabius quickly noticed, through the ship's monitoring system, that Melusin was standing in front of the Geller force field generator.
"Father... I'm sorry... hurry and untie it..." A series of fragmented communication sounds rang in Fabius's ears. Melusine's voice was filled with self-reproach, pain, and fear.
She seemed to be in some kind of danger.
Fabius suddenly fell into hesitation and indecision.
The ship sailed into the shadows of warp space, surrounded by the Hive's will, and is most likely doomed.
However, the Geller force field can still hold for a while.
With this time, Fabius was confident he could unravel the mysteries of the Primarch.
Melusine's recent communication was clearly an advising Fabius to ignore her and focus on unraveling the mysteries of the Primarch as soon as possible.
If Fabius can now unravel the mysteries of the Primarch, his will can be transferred into other bodies, taking that knowledge with him as he departs.
Fabius hesitated for a moment regarding whether Melusine was still the Primarch's mystery.
He glanced at the door of his laboratory, where the wisdom he had pursued throughout his life awaited him.
If he goes to save Melusine now, he may never have the chance to experience that wisdom again.
What's so important about Melusine?
She was merely one of Fabius's creations, and had been corrupted by the warp, rendering her incapable of replacing humanity.
If Fabius can understand the mysteries of the Primarch, he can create something more perfect than Melusin, and more likely to replace the old humanity.
But he didn't step through the gate; instead, he rushed towards Melusin's location.
Behind Fabius, the cocoon emitted a sharp, mournful cry. The new humans and Fabius's creations connected by the cocoon seemed to sense Fabius's choice.
The cocoon condemns Fabius's choice. The opportunity to become a god was right in front of him, so why did he throw it away? Why did he waste his talent?
"When I was young."
Fabius murmured to himself, as if speaking to himself, and also to the cocoon behind him:
"I believe I am destined to achieve something great."
"I am deeply emotional and have a calm and composed judgment. This ability to judge problems is a necessary condition for me to create a brilliant career. I recognize the value of my talent, from which I gain confidence and courage."
"I firmly believe that if I wallow in self-pity and do not make good use of my talents, it would be tantamount to a crime, because my talents will benefit all mankind."
"Just like the Lord of Mankind, the man we once called the Emperor, I can achieve a feat on par with his through my own talents—to create a new humankind, replace the old humankind, and accomplish the great undertaking known as the Great Expedition."
"Until that girl, my daughter Melusin, was born from the vat, I looked at her delicate and lovely face, and heard her call me father."
"I finally realized that I could never be compared to an emperor."
"I am but a mortal, unable to suppress my love for my daughter, even though she is not perfect, even though she has fallen into the Warp."
"I am not a god, I am a human being."
