Chapter 400 Why Can't I?

Chapter 400 Why Can't I?

Upon seeing the smile on Tang Xu's face, Yan Shiyu's gaze froze for a moment.

Tang Xu was still a little confused.

On the other end of the phone was her best friend, sharing good news that resonated deeply with her. Turning around, she saw Yan Shiyu, someone she could trust and rely on completely.

At that moment, a long-lost joy and satisfaction overcame her long-standing worries, and her eyes shone even brighter as she reached out her hand to the man in front of her.

Yan Shiyu reached out and took her hand, then sat down with her by the hot spring pool.

After leaving the Jiang family, she had always lived a carefree life, sitting on the ground whenever she felt like it. However, for Yan Shiyu, such behavior could not be considered normal.

Therefore, Tang Xu was slightly surprised. After looking up and meeting his gaze, she couldn't help but smile before leaning back into his arms and continuing to listen to Lu Xingyan's endless narration.

Yan Shiyu simply sat quietly, reached out and put his arm around her, letting her lean against him without disturbing her call.

After Lu Xingyan finally finished expressing his excitement and hung up the phone, Tang Xu looked up at Yan Shiyu.

The moment she looked up, Yan Shiyu was almost lost in thought, staring at the pool of water in front of him. Yet, he instinctively reacted the instant she raised her head, shifting his gaze to her face.

"Where did you go?" Tang Xu asked.

"I went out for a bit," Yan Shiyu replied simply, then added, "Who called? You seemed so happy listening to that?"

When Tang Xu mentioned the phone call, a smile returned to her eyes. "It was Lu Xingyan. He met Xingyang today and was overjoyed."

Seeing the smile on her face, Yan Shiyu smiled faintly as well, "Is that so?"

His reaction was quite unexpected for Tang Xu.

They had previously mentioned the two individuals on very occasional occasions.

Because Ji Yan is far too important to Yan Shiyu, and Yan Shiyu has not made any clear statement about the relationship between Lu Xingyan and Ji Yan, Tang Xu is unsure of his attitude towards it and has never mentioned it lightly.

But at that moment, the joy in her heart overwhelmed everything, so she said it out loud.

But I didn't expect Yan Shiyu to react so calmly.

If it were anything else, his reaction would probably be normal.

But since the matter concerns Ji Yan, he shouldn't be so indifferent no matter what.

Thinking back, it seems he hasn't mentioned Ji Yan or shown any emotional reaction to her for quite some time since he lost control when Jiang Beiheng and Ji Yan met.

This is obviously not normal.

But during those days, he always stayed with her, taking her to do things that the two of them had never done before. Tang Xu knew that he was suppressing something, and since she felt it was good to have something else to distract her, she didn't ask any more questions.

But at this moment, Tang Xu finally realized that something was wrong.

Given his personality, it's unlikely that he would truly be angry with Ji Yan, and even if he were, it's impossible for him to ignore her for so long.

Surely we can't have failed to overcome this hurdle after that little incident?
This wasn't the attitude she knew Yan Shiyu would have.

Thinking of this, Tang Xu leaned to the side and rested her head on his lap, continuing to look at him and ask, "Will you be angry?"

Yan Shiyu remained calm. "Why are you angry?"

“I always thought you didn’t really like Lu Xingyan… and since it’s related to Xingyang, your reaction should have been stronger,” Tang Xu said. “What do you think about what’s going on between them?”

Upon hearing this, Yan Shiyu simply replied, "Let it be."

"What does 'go with the flow' mean?" Tang Xu continued to ask.

Yan Shiyu looked down at her, "How would you like me to explain the meaning of these two words to you?"

"Would you approve of them being together? Do you believe Lu Xingyan can give her happiness? Aren't you afraid Lu Xingyan will hurt her? You care about her so much, don't you have any opinion on these things?"

Upon hearing this, Yan Shiyu remained silent for a moment before slowly saying, "I care, but it's none of my business. Perhaps without me, her life would be simpler and easier."

He said it so casually, his tone so light and indifferent, yet Tang Xu couldn't help but feel extremely uncomfortable.

She sat up abruptly from his lap, looked him straight in the eye, and asked, "Why would you think that?"

A clear tension flickered in her eyes. Yan Shiyu met her gaze quietly for a moment, then simply reached out to tidy her hair, saying softly, "I just don't want to put any more pressure on her. Let her have whatever life she wants. Like you said, as long as she exists in this world and can find happiness safely, isn't that the best outcome?"

"No." Tang Xu suddenly reached out and grabbed him tightly. "How could this be?"

"What should it look like?" Yan Shiyu asked in return.

"You've been searching for her for so many years, your greatest hope is that she can come back to you. Now that she's finally back, how can you give up?" Tang Xu said. "She doesn't have her memory yet, which is why she's confused and doesn't know how to handle her relationship with you. But sooner or later, she'll remember and she'll come back to you. Don't you even have that little bit of hope? Wouldn't all those years of waiting and devotion have been for nothing?"

After Tang Xu finished speaking somewhat hastily, she met Yan Shiyu's gaze and suddenly realized that she seemed to have overreacted.

She couldn't help but be nervous.

Putting aside the unfounded unease in her heart, her greatest hope now is that the two siblings can reconcile and truly return to being a family, becoming each other's support, armor, and fortress.

She never imagined that Yan Shiyu would give up on this idea.

He had suffered so much for this before, never thinking of giving up. How could he possibly want to give up now that Ji Yan has finally returned?

After gazing at each other for a long time, just as Tang Xu was about to say something, Yan Shiyu slowly nodded, as if she had been awakened and agreed with her idea, "Yes, you are right, all these years... it shouldn't have ended like this."

Tang Xu choked again.

When did he become so easy to talk to?
When did someone who used to be so stubborn start to obey her in everything?
Tang Xu felt as if something was wrong with her.

How could she feel uneasy no matter what Yan Shiyu did?

She felt uneasy when he said he wanted to give up, but she still felt uneasy when he said he wouldn't give up.

Tang Xu paused, then finally couldn't help but reach out and hug his waist, lifting her face to look at him. "What are you thinking? Tell me, okay? If you're tired or weary, tell me too... Didn't we agree to get married? If we get married and still live our own lives, each with our own ideas, then what's the point of getting married?"

Yan Shiyu lowered his eyes and looked at her for a moment, then finally reached out and hugged her, gently stroking her face, and whispered, "Don't worry, giving up is easy to say, but if you could really let go, you would have done so long ago."

Tang Xu was still worried and asked, "Then why haven't you gone to see her all this time?"

"Give her some time," Yan Shiyu said, "and give myself some time too."

Upon hearing this answer, Tang Xu's heavy unease finally subsided somewhat, but it was not completely eliminated.

She could only lean against him, unable to resist holding him tighter, seeking a sense of peace.

Just then, Yan Shiyu suddenly let go of her.

Tang Xu couldn't help but look up at him.

But then Yan Shiyu took her hand with one hand, and with the other hand, he took out a diamond ring from somewhere and gently slipped it onto her ring finger as if it were a rare treasure.

Tang Xu's gaze froze instantly.

She stared blankly at Yan Shiyu's movements, her breathing gradually tightening.

It's not that she hasn't worn a diamond ring on this hand before; in fact, she's worn one for a very long time.

But that diamond ring was almost a shackle for her, and it took her a long time to break free from it completely.

Tang Xu originally thought that she would never wear a ring on this hand again in her life.

But now, as yet another diamond ring falls into her lap, only she knows the tremor in her heart.

Such tremors are unrelated to any negative emotions.

The only relevant person is the man in front of me.

This is the mark and proof that he and she are now bound by blood and flesh. She likes this mark.

Even though the future remains uncertain and we don't know what it will become, having this certificate right now is enough to comfort us for the rest of our lives.

When Tang Xu tried to speak again, she found her throat tightening. "You've been gone for so long just to get the ring?"

Yan Shiyu gently took her hand and whispered, "For such a big event as a wedding, it's important to have some ceremony, right?"

With red eyes, Tang Xu stared at the diamond ring for a long time. When she looked up at him again, she finally smiled once more.

Yan Shiyu raised his hand and gently stroked the corner of her red eyes, then lowered his head and kissed her.

With each gulp in his throat, he silently swallowed a torrent of emotions.

……

The two of them stayed at the resort for a total of four days.

Although Fu Jiali had made the resort's activities and facilities extremely complete, the heavy snow that closed the mountain meant that with only a handful of people, the number of activities available was extremely limited.

Perhaps feeling bored himself, Fu Jiali disappeared by the second night.

Hua Fanxing stayed until the fourth day, and when Yan Shiyu and Tang Xu were about to leave, she even asked if she could hitch a ride with them.

Yan Shiyu did not refuse, and Tang Xu naturally had no objections either.

As the car drove along the highway back to Huai City, Yan Shiyu and Hua Fanxing seemed to have run out of things to talk about, while Tang Xu and Hua Fanxing chatted all the way.

Back in Huai City, before getting off the bus, Hua Fanxing asked Tang Xu for his contact information.

"I had a very pleasant chat with you today, Miss Tang. I don't have many friends around here. If we have time in the future, would it be possible to invite you out for shopping and dining together?"

“Of course,” Tang Xu said.

Yan Shiyu watched the scene unfold with a calm expression, making no comment.

As for Hua Fanxing's identity and the ambiguous relationship between her and Yan Shiyu, Tang Xu was no longer overly curious.

Since he's unwilling to talk about it, then so be it. Besides, Hua Fanxing is still in Huai City. As long as we keep in touch regularly, we'll eventually get an answer.

Yan Shiyu escorted Tang Xu back to Yujing Bay, and then returned to the Yan family without stopping.

Having been away from home for several days, Tang Xu couldn't stay idle after returning home. She tied up her hair and cleaned the house inside and out.

By the time the cleaning was completely finished, it was already dark.

Tang Xu took the trash she had sorted out downstairs and threw it away. When she went back upstairs, she had just stepped out of the elevator when she heard the elevator next to her stop on this floor as well.

Tang Xu assumed it was a neighbor and deliberately slowed her pace to say hello. Unexpectedly, the next person to step out of the elevator was someone she never expected—

Jiang Muchen.

Their eyes met, and Tang Xu was taken aback for a moment. Surprisingly, she didn't run away as soon as they met, but stood quietly and looked at him. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm looking for you," Jiang Muchen said.

The two people stood in the elevator lobby, neither of them moving.

"Is something the matter?" Tang Xu asked.

"Aren't you going to invite me in for a seat?" Jiang Muchen asked.

"Just tell me what's on your mind," Tang Xu said. "After all, you're quite busy, why waste time on trivial matters?"

“Perhaps after hearing why I’m here, you won’t think this is a pointless matter.” Jiang Muchen said as he walked straight to her door, glanced down at the keypad lock, and then turned to Tang Xu. “Open the door.”

Tang Xu had no intention of opening the door for him.

However, the next moment, Jiang Muchen's gaze suddenly fell on her hands.

In an instant, his gaze darkened. He grabbed Tang Xu's wrist, held her hand up to his eyes, and almost questioned, "What is this?"

Before their eyes, a diamond ring completely unfamiliar to him was firmly fastened to Tang Xu's ring finger.

"Jiang Muchen!" Tang Xu couldn't understand why he had suddenly appeared in front of her. "What exactly do you want?"

Jiang Muchen, however, only questioned sharply, "I'm asking you what this is!"

He gripped Tang Xu's wrist tightly, using almost all his strength, and his icy aura poured out, but it only made Tang Xu sneer.

"Isn't it obvious?" Tang Xu asked. "This diamond ring is even bigger than the one I wore back then. Can't you see it clearly? If you have cataracts at such a young age, I suggest you go to the hospital to see a doctor. I can't treat this."

Tang Xu's words were extremely sarcastic, which enraged Jiang Muchen. He forcibly pulled her hand to open the combination lock in front of him, then pushed Tang Xu inside and strode in himself, closing the door behind him behind him.

As soon as Tang Xu turned around, Jiang Muchen's hand reached out again, pinching her face hard. His voice was so dark it sent chills down her spine: "You incredibly foolish woman, you actually want to marry him? Do you know what kind of person he is? Do you know what he's done?"

Faced with Jiang Muchen's self-righteous and aggressive attitude, Tang Xu suddenly laughed, her contempt reaching its peak, "Whatever kind of person he is, whatever kind of things he has done... as long as he's better than you, that's enough."

One sentence instantly made Jiang Muchen almost exert all his strength, "Tang Xu, I've always known you're stupid, but I never thought you could be this stupid—do you know what he did to you? Do you know who was responsible for that car accident that made you unable to dance again?"

With that one sentence, Tang Xu's smile slowly faded.

Jiang Muchen, however, still seemed unsatisfied and said, word by word, "Do you really want to marry him? Marry a hit-and-run driver who ruined your life? Wake up!"

Jiang Muchen released Tang Xu's face only after he finished speaking, as if he wanted to enjoy the shock and pain on her face.

To his surprise, Tang Xu only stared blankly for a moment before looking up at him and asking, "How did you know about this?"

Although Tang Xu's reaction surprised Jiang Muchen, he thought she was just pretending because she couldn't believe it. So he looked down at her again and said, "There are always clues to things in this world. As long as something has happened, there will be people involved. As long as someone is involved, it can definitely be found out."

Tang Xu paused for a moment, then suddenly nodded and laughed, looking at him and saying, "You were able to find out even something like this, which shows how much effort you put in... Was it to find his Achilles' heel? And what did you find after all this time?"

"You still won't believe me? Is it because you refuse, or because you're afraid?" Jiang Muchen's face turned cold again, and he grabbed Tang Xu tightly once more. "Do I have to throw all the evidence in your face before you'll come to your senses?"

As he spoke, he began to reach into his pocket for his phone.

Tang Xu watched his actions, but simply shook her head slightly. "No need, no need to show me any evidence... So what if he really did it? I don't care."

Tang Xu's reaction was something Jiang Muchen hadn't expected at all.

Looking at Tang Xu's calm and composed expression, a terrifying thought suddenly flashed through his mind—

"You already knew, didn't you?"

Tang Xu paused for a moment, but did not deny it.

However, her silence had already given Jiang Muchen a clear answer.

Shock and anger surged within him simultaneously. He gripped Tang Xu's wrist tightly, nearly losing his composure. "You know you're still willing to be with him? You even want to marry him? Tang Xu, what's wrong with your brain? Where's your pride? Where's your stubbornness?"

Looking at Jiang Muchen, who was almost driven mad, Tang Xu really wanted to return those two questions to him—

Where is your pride? Where is your stubbornness?
Why did you come all the way to tell me this? What kind of effect are you hoping to achieve?

But Tang Xu didn't say anything.

She simply shook her head slightly. "That's my own business, it has nothing to do with you—whatever decision I make is none of your concern. Mr. Jiang, if you've only come to tell me this, then you've achieved your goal, you can leave now."

Jiang Muchen's anger burned to its peak in an instant, but after the peak, Tang Xu actually saw a trace of sorrow.

She thought she had misjudged the situation and didn't bother to pay attention. After forcefully breaking free from Jiang Muchen's hand, she walked to the door and reached out to open it.

But then Jiang Muchen's voice suddenly came from behind, filled with sorrow and self-mockery—

"If he can be forgiven for this, why can't I?"
