Chapter 78 Wolf and Fox

Chapter 78 Wolf and Fox

28th, north side of the English Channel, dusk!

"Torpedo! There is a torpedo! At 8 o'clock!" A sailor shouted from high above!
Two white water lines on the sea surface were approaching the Allied fleet at a speed of 44 knots (81 km/h).

The civilian ships that received the warning were like a flock of sheep encountering a ferocious beast. They all adjusted their postures in a panic to avoid it, causing chaos on the sea.

boom! ! !
A thousand-ton cargo ship turned too slowly and became unlucky. A G7a torpedo hit the stern of the ship, and the civilian ship was directly blown into two sections without any protection. There was no time for the people on board to abandon the ship before it sank into the sea with flames.

"U BOAT! Nine o'clock!" The lookout on the destroyer Courage spotted a figure rapidly diving in the distance.
Boom boom boom! ! !
The two destroyers, the Thorn and the Courage, followed, throwing barrels of depth charges from the stern into the sea, and huge columns of water rose above the sea.

This is the daily routine in the English Channel these two days. German submarines are hunting British civilian ships, while British destroyers are in turn hunting U-boats.

The continuous bombardment of depth charges seemed to have an effect. After a while, oil and broken parts floated up and the sea returned to calm.

The two destroyers hovered in the same place for a while and found no new signs, so they confirmed that the other party had been sunk, and then turned around and caught up with the civilian fleet.

Twenty minutes later, the originally calm sea surface began to surge again, and a black figure like a whale emerged from the water.

A German U-boat, which the British called a U boat, nicknamed: Sea Wolf.

The Sea Wolves often stuff debris and waste oil into torpedo tubes, fire them when attacked, dive to the bottom of the sea and shut off the engines to pretend they are destroyed.

"Surface! Stay alert!" the commander of the German submarine ordered after handing the periscope to the observer.

"Hurry up! Turn on the stove. Ten minutes, everyone, eat quickly!" The chief quartermaster shouted, and the small interior of the submarine became busy.

When a submarine is sailing underwater, it is impossible to light an open fire inside the ship. Therefore, during combat, soldiers and officers alike can only eat cold meals. Even if the rationed supplies are of better quality, no one can stand eating cold meals every day. So after a short surface, the first thing to do is to ventilate, and the second thing is to start a fire and cook.

The ventilation system started up and fresh air rushed in, diluting the smell of sweat, diesel and wet sewers to some extent.

The surrounding environment became slightly better, and the quickly heated dinner was brought to the narrow table, and the soldiers prepared to enjoy a rare hot meal.

Sizzle! ! !
The electrically-driven alarm suddenly sounded, the soldiers' faces changed, they all reluctantly put away their food, and then ran back to their combat posts - that sound meant that a target had appeared.

"Five civilian ships! No escort, 5 nautical miles away, dive quickly!" the commander gave the order.

The U-boat quickly hid below the water surface, with only the periscope quietly observing the other side. The civilian ships without escort were like lambs to be slaughtered, and their only thought now was not to let any of them go.

"Sir, the target will be within torpedo range in one minute." The torpedo fire controller reported.

The captain raised his hand and waved it, signaling to bring the opponent closer before launching an attack.

It was getting closer and closer. The opposing fleet was already within sight of the naked eye, and the observer could even see the name written on the side of the leading civilian ship.

Little Nomad
The torpedoes were ready. As long as they were brought a little closer, the commander would give the order to fire them, and then they would be quickly reloaded to send all the ships to the bottom of the sea.

At this moment, the Little Wanderer in front suddenly slowed down, blew a long whistle as if it had sensed danger, then turned 90 degrees and sped off in the other direction without looking back. The other civilian ships heard the signal, paused for a moment, and followed at full speed.

He actually ran away!

Plop! Plop! Plop! Something fell from the stern of the Little Nomad. It turned out to be a metal oil drum painted white.

As the Little Ranger sailed, more and more oil drums were dropped, and finally a "Nike" logo was formed on the sea.

"Sir, should we give pursuit?" asked the adjutant at the side.

"Hmph!" The commander snorted heavily, and then ordered, "Dive, let's leave here and change places."

When the others heard what their superior said, they also breathed a sigh of relief. If they chased after them, the merchant ship without resistance would of course be destroyed, but their whereabouts would also be exposed. Those white-painted gasoline barrels circled their position on the sea like an exclamation mark, which could easily attract attacks from destroyers.

Living in peace may be the best option for both parties.

"Huh, it's just like the legend, worthy of being called the Fox of the Strait." A soldier whispered on the side.

"What are you talking about?" the German commander turned around and asked.

"Uh, sorry, sir, it's just some rumors among the sailors." The soldier saluted and apologized hurriedly.

"No, tell me what the rumor is." The officer did not blame the soldier but let him continue.

So, under the soldiers' stumbling confession, a story similar to a sea legend was told:
Legend has it that there was a very special merchant ship in the Allied fleet. It did not have any sonar system, but it could easily sense the position of submarines around it. As long as it approached within four nautical miles of it, it would be discovered. Moreover, the captain of the ship was very cunning. If the submarine insisted on chasing it, it would fall into the Allied trap.

The name of that ship was "Little Ranger". Due to its fox-like style of behavior and the fact that it only operated in the English Channel, the German submarine force nicknamed it "Channel Fox".

"How could such people exist? They are just some extremely lucky guys." The boatswain on the side laughed, but the commander looked thoughtful.

He was the officer and knew more information than the average soldier. As far as he knew, there was indeed such an evil civilian ship, and it had previously led a fellow submarine into an ambush by an Allied destroyer.

Whatever he is, don't take any chances...

Huh~~, He Chi let out a long breath, covered his right eye, and sat down against the wall.

Another silver coin disappeared from his palm. This was the fourth one used in three days.

Unlike on land, the system for generating underwater views is extremely expensive, and because it involves depths of hundreds of meters underwater, it puts a heavy strain on the right eye, and the limit of his body's tolerance is four nautical miles.

Fortunately, the opponent did not pursue me relentlessly this time, otherwise, even if I could shake him off in the end, my body would not be able to withstand it a few more times.

Dunkirk Beach was right in front of him, and a number popped up in his right eye: [Little Wanderer Number: 358, Total Ranking: 10]
