Chapter 238 Windsor Castle
Chapter 238 Windsor Castle
August 1942, 8, Windsor Castle, London.
This was originally the private resting place of King George VI. However, since the Battle of Britain last year, German planes would occasionally fly around the Channel. For safety reasons, the royal family's office location is often moved here.
His Majesty has not been in very good health since the great bombing last year. He particularly likes quietness. Normally, the maids and staff here walk very lightly.
But there is one exception.
"Code 999! Her Highness Margaret is missing!"
Several agents from Section 5 responsible for security hurried through the corridor, and several maids and tutors followed in their search.
Princess Margaret escaped during etiquette class while going to the toilet. The whole team had been looking for her for two hours. Although everyone was roughly certain that this mischievous second princess had basically never left Windsor Castle, the fact that she was always hiding always made everyone worried.
They now miss their former colleague who was able to catch Margaret like a kitten.
Elizabeth is one year older. The girl has become more beautiful. Her golden hair has gradually turned darker, making her more dignified with this beautiful change.
"Sanny, haven't you found it yet?" Elizabeth asked the head maid beside her. There was no accusation in her tone, but instead it made people feel a unique sense of affinity.
"Sorry, Your Highness, we are still working hard." The head maid bowed slightly, looking very humble. Although there was no official royal order yet, she thought that the eldest princess in front of her was increasingly meeting the standards of a royal heir.
"Is there any place you haven't looked in yet?" Elizabeth asked, slightly adjusting the angle of her chin to make her posture more polite.
"The only thing missing is the reception room. The Prime Minister and Mr. Menzies are discussing official business with His Majesty." The head maid leaned over and answered.
"Okay, I understand." Elizabeth nodded slightly. She could probably guess what her sister was doing.
Leaving her maids and guards behind, Eliza walked alone in the corridors of Windsor Castle. The distance of each step she took was almost the same, making her more in line with the dignified and elegant image of the eldest princess.
The long-heeled ladies' shoes on her feet were a little uncomfortable, but the princess had already begun to adapt.
Walking through the flower corridor, she turned her head to look at the white Spitfire fighter plane parked in the courtyard.
After the Battle of Britain, the White Knight, having lost his true master, never took to the sky again.
At Elizabeth's request, the plane was towed to Windsor Castle and placed in the widest atrium. At the same time, personnel were arranged to maintain it and clean the dust on it every once in a while.
To outsiders, it seemed that Elizabeth was just commemorating her unforgettable experience over London, but in fact, even the eldest princess was not quite sure what kind of feelings she had.
Elizabeth tidied her hair, adjusted her mood, walked into the temporary meeting area, formed a small circle outside, and then stopped in front of a closed door.
Margaret was there, indeed, holding a small glass and putting her ear to it to eavesdrop on the conversation inside.
She was so absorbed in her concentration that she was not even aware that Elizabeth was standing behind her.
"Margaret, you are eavesdropping again. It would be very rude if you were caught..." Elizabeth said to her sister in a low voice.
"Shh~ I'm listening to the key points, don't disturb me, you can come along." Margaret waved her hand and handed a cup to her sister.
"Eavesdropping is not what a lady should do. I don't want to do this..." Elizabeth refused.
"What are they talking about?" With just one sentence, Elizabeth froze as if under a spell. She then looked around, leaned over, picked up the glass in her sister's hand and put it close to her.
It was Menzies' voice.
"Your Majesty, Mr. Prime Minister, I can guarantee that none of his actions over the past year were instructed by me. Including the Moscow incident last year and the Copenhagen incident not long ago, he contacted a group of intelligence personnel and acted on his own."
"So our ace agent, who traveled halfway around the world to the Pacific Ocean and helped the Americans destroy the Japanese aircraft carrier, was also acting spontaneously?" George VI's words were full of doubt.
"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, this may sound unbelievable, but it is true..."
Churchill interrupted, "Well, although we haven't learned the details yet, it seems that he has made a big move in the Pacific this time. I heard that he even sent a fresh Japanese lieutenant general to Washington."
"Yes, Mr Prime Minister," Menzies continued.
"Then he is still one of ours."
"Yes, Mr. Prime Minister, I am sure of it."
This might be the day Menzies says “yes” the most in recent memory.
Churchill then continued, "In this case, let's not care about the reason. Our allies need us, so we might as well make some requests of our own after meeting our friends' needs. Menzies, do you understand what I mean?"
"Yes, Mr. Prime Minister, more planes, tanks, supplies and oil."
"Yes, that's what I mean. After the United States agrees to the conditions, I suggest that we temporarily hand over part of the intelligence authority over the Pacific to 007, including placing appropriate personnel under his command. This will make us appear more sincere."
Churchill then symbolically asked George VI about his "suggestions", "What do you think, Your Majesty?"
George VI sighed and said, "Okay, let's do it, but I would like to remind you, Mr. Menzies, that your ability to control your agents seems to be too weak."
"Yes, Your Majesty, I will improve this situation once I can contact him accurately."
Outside, the two sisters looked at each other, and Margaret mouthed to her sister, "That guy went to Moscow and Copenhagen, and is now in the South Pacific~"
Elizabeth just held the cup, wondering what she was thinking?
At this moment, a voice suddenly came from the next room, "Your Majesty, please forgive me for being rude. I need to go smoke a cigarette. You know I can't live without this thing now..."
"Wait, that's not a smoking room..."
Footsteps were heard, and before the person inside could finish his words, the door in front of them suddenly opened.
Gulp! Gulp! Bang!
The two sisters rolled in through the open door, and the two glasses kept spinning on the carpet.
Looking at his daughters rolling on the ground, especially the eldest daughter who was usually dignified and quiet, George VI's face looked a little ugly.
A few days later, on the night before the attack on Guadalcanal, He Chi accidentally obtained intelligence information on the entire South Solomon Islands kept by the British, as well as the command of about dozens of agents.
