Chapter 148 Lies
Chapter 148 Lies
As night fell, the children, who rarely had enough to eat, had gone to bed.
The older teenagers took the initiative to lie down on the periphery, surrounding the younger ones in the middle. The sound of smacking lips could be heard from the room from time to time, and several children still had unfinished popcorn in their hands.
The five members of He Chi's team sat together with a map spread out in the middle.
The map was covered with dense annotations, and judging from the handwriting, it seemed that they had just been drawn.
"We are now in the buffer zone of the battlefield. The nearest city is Voronezh, which is 140 kilometers away from us. It will take at least three days to walk there." Bekelev gestured on the map and drew a long line.
"There is another route," Bekelev continued, drawing a shorter line with a pencil. "We can also take the water route. 50 kilometers to the north is a tributary of the Don River. If we march quickly, we can reach it in less than a day. After arriving there, we can find a boat to go downstream and finally reach Voronezh directly."
"Now I feel the need to decide what to do next."
No one else expressed their opinion because everyone knew that both options actually had risks.
If they walked, they would probably be exposed on the open plains nearby for more than 48 hours. Once they encountered German aircraft or armored vanguards, a few people would not be able to outrun the tracks and aircraft on foot.
The distance is shorter if you go by water, but the prerequisite is that you must find a boat by the river. If there is no boat, it will be more troublesome.
"Is there only one choice between the two?" He Chi pondered as he looked at the map in front of him.
"So…"
"Wait a minute!" Yulia suddenly raised her hand. "Let me ask you first, can anyone here fly a plane?"
He Chi looked at the other people and said, "I have flying experience, so I have no problem flying a normal plane."
Then his eyes suddenly lit up. "You mean the one in the barn?"
"That's right." Yulia pointed out the window with her thumb. "I looked at the plane, and the damage wasn't serious. Dismantle the completely broken car. Give me three days, and I'm 70% sure I can make it fly."
"It only takes an hour to fly to Voronezh from here. After landing, you can use my ID to contact the local garrison and ask them to send a small force to pick us up. You can even drive a truck to pick up the children." Bekelev also became excited.
"Are you so valuable?" He Chi said to the other party half-jokingly.
"Please don't underestimate me. Although I am not as famous as 007, I am also a senior intelligence officer lurking beside Guderian. I will at least get a Gold Star Medal when I go back this time." Bekelev raised his chin with a smile.
"Three days, then let's stay here for three days." He Chi stretched out his hand and shook hands with the other party.
Finally, everyone decided to stop briefly in this small village so that Yulia could try to repair the plane.
When the children learned that they were going to repair an airplane, they all became excited. They took the initiative to rush to the car, and one by one, they carried the disassembled parts of all sizes to the warehouse, laughing.
Seeing Yulia holding the toolbox and hammering on the plane, the children beside her couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
The day passed quickly, and while eating, the children were still chattering about today's airplane repair.
"How is it?" He Chi asked Yulia, who was covered in oil.
"It went quite smoothly. There were a few places in the middle where the size wasn't right, but I just knocked it in and it fit." The girl raised the hammer in her hand.
Knock it and put it in. Listen, is this what someone who repairs an airplane should say?
Since there was no problem with the repair work, the rest of the team couldn't help so they just relaxed with the kids.
He Chi was trying to fry French fries, Leah was teaching the older boys how to shoot, and Tanya was trying to teach the younger girls how to weave straw rabbits, but the ones she made looked more like bears.
At night, when everyone was asleep, a figure holding a candle quietly came to the warehouse and banged on the tail of the plane.
"Damn it, no matter how hard I try, it just won't fit in!" the man holding the candle cursed under his breath.
Bang! The barn door opened, and the cold moonlight shone in, reflecting a beautiful face in the warehouse. "Miss Yulia, aren't you going to bed?" He Chi walked into the barn and closed the door casually, and the light in the house dimmed again.
"I can't sleep and want to catch up on the progress." Yulia said softly. Because she turned her back, He Chi couldn't see the expression on the girl's face.
"Really?" He Chi walked over and picked up a greasy part on the ground. "The size difference between aviation parts and automobile parts should be very large. Even if the tolerance of Soviet aircraft parts is larger, it is impossible to repair a Soviet aircraft by simply dismantling a German car, right?"
Yulia remained silent for five minutes. The silence in the barn was eerie.
"Yulia, how confident are you that you can repair this plane?" He Chi asked in a low voice.
"Thirty percent, maybe even lower. I lied to you during the day." Yulia finally spoke.
After getting the expected answer, He Chi did not seem very excited. He just found a clean place to sit down and asked, "Why? Can you tell me about it?"
"Why? You ask me why?!" Yulia's voice gradually became louder and her face began to turn red.
"Yesterday you were all discussing how to leave, but did anyone ever think about what would happen to these children?!"
He Chi didn't say anything, but Yulia became more and more excited.
"Many children here are under 10 years old. They had trouble getting food before. If we leave, we will be handing them over to the Germans!"
"Tell me! How do they survive!"
"Many of them will die! Did you know that?!"
Yulia finally grabbed He Chi by the collar and questioned loudly.
He Chi let the other party pull him, and then asked softly
"I heard from Bekelev that you were a war orphan, right?"
Yulia did not answer.
"You don't want these children to die in this Jedi, and you have no other choice but to take the risk and try to repair the plane, right?"
"You're afraid we won't agree, so you can only lie to us and trick us into staying here first, is that right?"
Yulia gasped and turned her head away, which was considered as an admission.
He Chi shook his head, patted the girl on the shoulder, and walked past her.
Yulia waited for a long time but did not hear the sound of the warehouse door closing. She turned around and found that He Chi was squatting next to the plane with a candle in his hand. He also picked up a pen and began to paint quickly.
A sketch of the tail wing was already halfway drawn on paper.
Yulia was stunned.
"Why are you still standing there! Come and help me quickly. If you can't fix it in three days, I can't hide it from everyone." The Oriental man said to her in a scolding tone.
The sudden change made Yulia feel mixed emotions. She sniffed and replied softly.
"Hmm~"
