Lin Bei stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the 14th floor.
Before the elevator doors closed, the hotel manager and Constantine strode in.
Lin Bei glanced at the two of them indifferently, while Gerald wore a polite smile: "Guest, let me escort you back to your room."
Constantine put his hands in his pockets and stubbed out his cigarette: "I followed along to see what's so special about that room."
Lin Bei shrugged and didn't stop them. He knew that anyone would be curious about what it would be like to have a new person move into this room that had killed countless people.
Lin Bei remained silent, and the elevator fell into a deathly silence.
A somber atmosphere hung over Gerald and Constantine. As the elevator continued to ascend, Gerald grew increasingly nervous as they approached the 14th floor.
Although Lin Bei signed a waiver of liability, it was still a human life at stake, and he still wanted to give Lin Bei one last piece of advice.
As for Constantine, he was there purely to watch the spectacle; he wanted to see if Lin Bei would explode into fireworks the moment he stepped into that cursed room.
"Ding--"
We've reached the fourteenth floor.
As the elevator doors opened, a chilly wind blew in from the corridor ahead, and Constantine keenly sensed that something was amiss.
This floor is colder than the lobby on the first floor.
If Constantine could sense it, Lin Bei could naturally sense it too.
He glanced indifferently at the dimly lit corridor and stepped out of the elevator.
Constantine swallowed the words he had intended to say to Lin Bei.
He thought to himself, with Lin Bei's abilities, there's no way he wouldn't see the problem. Lin Bei is willing to die, and even if he wanted to stop him, he couldn't.
Constantine followed him out of the elevator.
Gerald was left alone in the elevator. He felt a chill run down his spine and quickly followed.
You should know that if Lin Bei hadn't been going to stay in 1408, he wouldn't have even come to the 14th floor.
Furthermore, due to the existence of room 1408, all the other rooms on the fourteenth floor were sold at half price. Some daring people even stayed there without incident, but the infamous reputation of room 1408 cast a shadow over the minds of the people in the hotel.
Putting aside everything else, the cleaning staff who come to clean the rooms on the fourteenth floor are all specially selected for their daring, and their wages have been doubled.
Even so, only one cleaning staff member dared to come to the fourteenth floor.
Upon entering the fourteenth floor, Gerald felt as if he were being watched by something.
He quickly approached Lin Bei, carefully considered his tone, and whispered, "Mr. Lin Bei, for your safety, would you like to change rooms?"
Lin Bei didn't even glance at Gerald, but strode forward until he stopped at the door of room 1408, at which point he finally spoke.
"Okay, let's go."
Gerald looked helpless and could only turn around to leave.
Constantine didn't rush to leave. Instead, he put his hands in his pockets, a cigarette dangling from his lips, and smiled lazily: "Why are you trying to kick us out? Open the door, I want to see what happens after you go in."
Lin Bei was about to unlock the door when he heard this and glanced at Constantine indifferently: "What, you want to bet with me? I bet I can get out safely, what are you going to bet on?"
Hearing Lin Bei say this, Constantine shrugged and leaned against the wall by the door: "You never participate in bets you can lose. Since you say so, I'll bet on your safety too."
Lin Bei chuckled, ignoring Constantine, and strode inside, opening the door.
After Lin Bei stepped inside, Gerald, who was standing some distance away, looked despairing. He slowly closed his eyes, shook his head, and sighed softly, "God, yet another person will be taken to hell."
Constantine, who was by the door, turned to look into the room.
Room 1408 looks no different.
The newly renovated room looked much brighter than the other rooms. It was a suite with a kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom. The floor was covered with a dark red carpet, and the walls were decorated in the familiar European style. The room was neat and clean. If Gerald hadn't had news reports and various photographic evidence, no one would have believed that so many people had died here.
Constantine stood outside the door, watching Lin Bei walk back and forth in the room with his hands behind his back.
Constantine noticed a nautical painting of a ship hanging on the living room wall. The painting depicted a fierce storm and churning black seawater, which did not seem like a good omen.
Constantine frowned slightly, lowered his head and lit a cigarette: "Lin Bei, I'm right next door to you. If anything happens, just call me and I won't abandon you."
Lin Bei was looking around the room when he heard Constantine's words and couldn't help but find it amusing.
He turned to Constantine and sneered, "I'm asking you for help? Please, Constantine, let's not even talk about whether I need your help or not. If something really happened in this room, do you think you could hear it? So many people have died in this room, why haven't the guests in the next room ever noticed?"
After saying that, Lin Bei was too lazy to waste words with Constantine. He strode to the door and waved his hand impatiently: "Alright, go do your thing. I'll come find you when things are settled."
As soon as he finished speaking, Lin Bei slammed the door shut.
The moment the door closed, Lin Bei sensed a strange fluctuation coming from the room.
It was a very subtle change; if Lin Bei hadn't been so perceptive, he wouldn't have noticed it.
Lin Bei stood by the door for a while, then slightly curled his lips into a knowing smile.
So that's how it is. Once the door is closed, it's like entering another space. No wonder the neighbors don't know what's happening in this room, and no matter what they do, the people inside can't contact the people outside.
Telephone and internet were both unavailable.
Even throwing things out the window won't work.
The moment the door closed, the owner of the room essentially pushed himself into another space.
The eerie resentment lingering in room 1408 made it easier to commit murder.
Lin Bei remained calm and turned to walk towards the bedroom.
He went to the bedroom window and gazed at the distant scenery. The setting sun was slanting in the distance, and soon the long night would begin.
This scene must have been the last sight each guest saw on earth before they died.
Lin Bei turned around and lay back on the bed, silently waiting for the right opportunity.
Time passed slowly, until 11 p.m., when a sound loud enough to wake a sleeping person came from the living room.
Lin Bei wasn't asleep, so he heard the sounds clearly.
It felt like someone was jumping around in the living room, or like something was running past quickly.
"Pretend to be a ghost."
Lin Bei sneered, got out of bed, walked over, opened the door, and strode into the living room.
He turned on the light switch in the living room, and white light filled the entire room. Everything in the room was back in its place, without any mistakes.
Lin Bei looked around and slowly walked towards the source of the sound.
With his abilities, he could discern the source of the sound even through a wall. Lin Bei stopped in the middle of the living room, stepped on the carpet, and found it felt strange.
Looking down for a closer look, Lin Bei noticed that the carpet was soaked.
Only a small area was wet, and when I looked up, I was facing a painting on the front wall depicting a cruise ship encountering a storm at sea.
This feeling is very subtle.
When two things that have only the slightest connection are linked together, a strange sense of rationality emerges.
For example, right now, Lin Bei felt as if someone had just jumped out of the painting, landed where he was standing, and then disappeared into thin air.
Lin Bei stared indifferently at the painting on the wall for a while, then casually looked away and walked towards the door.
He grasped the doorknob, gave it a gentle tug, and the door opened.
However, a wall was built in front of the door that originally led to the corridor, blocking the only way out.
Lin Bei raised an eyebrow slightly: "Oh, so it's starting already? At least in the original story, the protagonist had two chances to escape."
That being said, Lin Bei didn't care whether he could escape or not. He didn't touch the wall in front of him, but instead closed the door with a smile.
As he turned around, Lin Bei's eyes met the dark figure at the bedroom door.
The dark figure had been there for an unknown amount of time, standing silently at the doorway of the dark bedroom, staring at Lin Bei.
Lin Bei paused, somewhat surprised that the resentment in the room was about to reveal its true form to deal with him, but then he saw the dark figure turn and walk towards the bathroom in the bedroom.
Lin Bei was curious and followed.
As soon as Lin Bei entered the bathroom, he immediately understood what was going on.
This is not the resentment gathered in this room, but the spirits of those who died here, who are constantly repeating the scene before their death.
For example, right now, he went to the sink, turned on the faucet, filled the sink with water, and then put his head in. No matter how much he struggled, he just couldn't pull his head out.
The water was only shallow enough to barely cover his face, yet he still managed to drown himself.
Then another noise came from the bedroom. Lin Bei turned around and saw a woman in pajamas screaming and rushing towards the window.
The moment the woman hit the glass, she passed right through it and fell heavily to the ground.
After one or two earthbound spirits appeared, the others also began to appear.
Suddenly, the quiet room became bustling with activity. Lin Bei sat expressionlessly on the edge of the bed, watching the earthbound spirits repeat the scenes before their deaths, feeling somewhat helpless.
"This is too noisy. Anyone else would go crazy if they came here."
That's what he said, but Lin Bei shook his head and waved his hand.
A gentle breeze swept through the room, and wherever it went, black and red chains appeared on the earthbound spirits. The chains snapped the next second, and the earthbound spirits looked around blankly before turning to ashes and disappearing in the breeze.
The room fell silent again.
Lin Bei looked around and sneered, "Stop pretending and trying to scare me. Show me some real skills, or it'll be too boring."
Perhaps provoked by Lin Bei's words, or perhaps surprised by Lin Bei's ability to dispel the earthbound spirits, room 1408 fell into a brief silence.
Lin Bei didn't know how much time had passed, but he was getting a little bored when noises came from the living room outside again.
Lin Bei was about to get up and open the bedroom door when he heard the sound of flowing water coming from the living room.
Lin Bei was somewhat bewildered. Where did the water come from?
But when he hurried over and opened the door, he saw the painting on the wall and felt helpless.
This phantom haunted house can only fool ordinary people.
Look at the mess in the living room. In the painting on the wall, a storm has capsized a cruise ship. Seawater mixed with rainwater is pounding on the painting, and surging waves are flowing out of the painting, almost flooding most of the living room.
Just as Lin Bei was about to raise his hand to destroy the painting, something in the water brushed past his calf.
The seawater had reached Lin Bei's upper thighs. It was pitch black underwater, and he couldn't see anything clearly. Lin Bei squinted slightly and raised his hand to use the power of the Shadow Monarch.
Just as the unseen thing in the water wrapped around Lin Bei's calf, the already turbulent water suddenly surged up with even bigger splashes.
Black liquid surged from the bottom of the water, spreading out in all directions at a speed that was difficult to detect with the naked eye.
In the blink of an eye, almost all the water that had filled the room was covered and swallowed by the black liquid. Some of the black liquid climbed up the wall and swallowed the painting as well.
When the black liquid returned to the ground, the water that filled the living room was gone.
All that remained was the withered, skeletal humanoid monster wrapped around Lin Bei's legs.
It's a demon.
Lin Bei narrowed his eyes slightly, raised his hand and grabbed, the black liquid transforming into a large hand that seized the slender humanoid monster.
Lin Bei raised his hand, and the black liquid lifted the slender humanoid monster and brought it to Lin Bei's face.
The demon seemed surprised that Lin Bei could actually catch him. He struggled and tried to hide, but no matter how he used his power, it was as if it was sealed and wouldn't obey his commands.
The demon stared at Lin Bei with its scarlet and bright yellow eyes, and opened its mouth to let out a piercing scream, no different from a wild beast.
Lin Bei hung the demon in mid-air, looking at him calmly: "Don't struggle. If I were you, I would save some strength to beg for mercy, and maybe I could let you die a quick death."
To everyone's surprise, the demon, who was clearly at a disadvantage, actually laughed as soon as he said that.
He slowly grinned, letting out a broken, grating laugh: "Beg for mercy? You mean, for a noble demon to beg for mercy from a lowly human like you? What a joke, a complete joke! I don't know where your power comes from, and perhaps you are indeed more powerful than those I have killed before, but you can never defeat my master."
As he spoke, the demon struggled again, his strength immense, showing no regard for his own life or death.
Lin Bei looked at the crazed demon and sneered, "You're different from the demons I've encountered before. They were all low-level demons, but you still have some backbone. I just wonder if your so-called master will show up and avenge you if I kill you here."
Upon hearing this, the demon's expression changed slightly, but he quickly regained his composure: "Kill me if you want, my master will definitely come to kill you. This is my master's territory, and he will not allow someone like you who can kill demons to live. Even if it's not me, someone else will come to collect souls for my master!"
With just a few words, Lin Bei understood the devil's intention.
The purpose of occupying this room was to seize human souls, then bind them here, making them relive the scene before their death. After a hundred years, when the souls have been tempered to the point of suffering, they will become an irresistible delicacy for demons.
Lin Bei said calmly, "Is that so? Well then, killing you is not very satisfying. Call your master over, and I'll kill your master too."
After saying that, Lin Bei released the lowly demon.
The lowly demon fell to the ground, rolled once, and looked at Lin Bei in disbelief.
What happened to this human being?
He clearly had the chance to kill him, but he actually let him go?
Was he too confident in his own power, believing he could rise above demons? (End of Chapter)
