I personally think that Lao Huo has always had a strong tendency to self-destruct.

It gave me the feeling that he would do anything as long as he could succeed in revenge.

Of course, this is the feeling I got in the early stage, and as the number of companions around him increased, this feeling became weaker and weaker (except when Moon died, it was even more serious during that period). However, in the later period, when Dong'er got into trouble and Qiu'er sacrificed himself, his self-destruction was not my feeling, but something that was designated in the original text many times (including but not limited to Mingdou Mountains and Nine Swords and Eighteen Caves).
