Chapter 7: Wands and Everyday Life
Chapter 7: Wands and Everyday Life
Wands. Lots of wands.
When Andrew stepped into the store, he was shocked by the room that looked like an armory.
'There are enough wands here to form a wizarding army...'
Although he couldn't estimate how many wands there were, just looking at the boxes in front of him, if every box contained finished wands, the number should be at least a thousand.
While he was calculating how many wands there were, a crisp sound of bells came from somewhere at the back of the shop.
Soon, an old man came out.
"New guest," he glanced at Andrew, then noticed Professor McGonagall behind him, and the smile on his face suddenly became brighter, "Ah, Minerva, good morning, it's so nice to see you."
However, the pleasantries ended before they even began, as the old man seemed to forcibly change the subject, "Well, a brand new wand - yes, that is essential."
"My name is Ollivander, you are a new student at Hogwarts. What should I call you?"
"Andrew Taylor." Andrew kept smiling. "So I'm going to choose my partner from these wands?"
"Of course, the best and most loyal companion." Ollivander's smile became even brighter. It was obvious that he liked others to call his wand that way.
"Great," Andrew was a little impatient. He raised his right hand, dispersed the magic power as he had trained several times before in the orphanage, and then clenched the air.
A long box twitched, then broke away from the shelf and flew towards Andrew at a slow but steady pace. In the last part of the journey, it even passed through the wooden box and flew directly into Andrew's hands.
He gripped the wand tightly, as if it was supposed to be in his hand, and a strange feeling came to him along the wand - as if it was not that he was holding something, but that his arm had suddenly extended a little.
"Incredible."
Andrew admired in a low voice. He stroked the wand with his left hand, and the magic power leaked out like water. Subconsciously, Andrew pointed the wand at the ground, and a blue light slowly poured out. The ground instantly turned into grass. The tender grass that just covered the soles of the feet felt soft, and there was no way to tell what it looked like before.
"That's perfect," Andrew said with a look of shock on his face, "I understand what you mean now, Professor."
"Indeed," Ollivander exclaimed, "It's perfect. You can only see such a perfect scene once every ten years or so..."
"Acacia wood, dragon heart nerve, eleven inches... an extremely picky combination, and an extremely powerful combination, Mr. Taylor."
"But as an old man, I still don't want you to choose your wand this way, because the other wands just don't fit you that well, and when called upon by magic they will try to attack the box that protects them... This is not good."
Professor McGonagall also had an embarrassed look on her face - normal wizard families would tell stories about choosing wands, and students from Muggle families generally would not be so familiar and try to summon their own wands. To be precise, children from Muggle families would not consciously develop their magic power to the point where they could summon a wand.
After hastily apologizing, Professor McGonagall took Andrew away. After such an incident, Professor McGonagall suddenly felt that this child might be able to enter Gryffindor...
This made her even more ashamed and she couldn't stay any longer.
"I'm sorry, Professor. I thought summoning was to use magic to find the wand that best suits me."
Andrew whispered, he was really a little ashamed. He had read too many novels and took it for granted that summoning his companions was to use magic to sense the wand that best fit him. Who knew that the wand shop would dismantle the boxes one by one to experiment?
According to Professor McGonagall's description, they measured the appropriate proportions, and then slowly unpacked and selected the wands that met the range. He was extremely tasteless and unpacked a bunch of packages, picked out the ones, and left happily...
"It's not all your fault," Professor McGonagall remained calm. "Well, it's getting late. I have to take you back. I have to visit another family this afternoon and take them to Diagon Alley for shopping."
"Okay, thank you Professor."
-
After sending Andrew back to the orphanage, Professor McGonagall left in a hurry. Andrew asked around and learned that not many students were recruited from the Muggle world, which was the non-magical world as explained by Professor McGonagall. But considering that it took half a day to recruit one student, Professor McGonagall might have to stay in Diagon Alley for the next few days.
But this is not a big deal for Andrew who needs to go back there - his most important problem now is that he has no money.
Yes...no money.
Even second-hand books were ridiculously expensive, which meant that in addition to gaining a basic understanding of the wizarding world, he also had to launder enough money to pay for his second visit to Diagon Alley and travel to London.
As for the matter of earning Galleons and spending Galleons, it also needs to be put on the agenda urgently, but considering the price of reference materials, he decided to go to the second-hand bookstore again before considering whether to do it.
But all these can be put aside, even previewing the textbooks to understand the magical world can be put aside. What he needs to do now is to go back to his room and write down all the questions and answers so that he can use them when reviewing them later.
"Andrew!"
While he was carrying things and thinking briefly, a sound that made his teeth ache was heard.
"It's over..."
"I was so excited about going out this time that I forgot to buy food..."
Sure enough, a few naughty kids with sweat and mud on their faces came running over along with the sound. Andrew took a quick look and confirmed that they were not playing too crazy. Although their clothes were as shabby as usual, they were still clean and there was no sign of intentional soiling.
"Mammy said that you were taken away by a professor from some school!"
"That's right, it says you're going to be taken to boarding school!"
"I'm not arrested, I've been accepted. I'm here to get my school robes and books." He raised the bag of books in his left hand. "Here they are. There are some small things in it that are easy to spill. I have to go back and put the things down first, then organize the books. I'll take you out to play in the afternoon."
After thinking for a moment, he added, "You guys go play first, and each of you will get an ice cream in the afternoon."
The generous promise stopped the children who were originally planning to look for food.
A series of good ones flew out, and the lively little guys rushed away again.
"Okay, let's start organizing it quickly," he smiled and shook his head, and began to record the morning conversation in shorthand. After confirming that it was correct, he took out a knife and glue from the drawer - he was going out to play in the afternoon, so he had to change the cover of the wizarding world book he wanted to read.
