Chapter 18 The Arrogant Military Officer
It turned out that the woman's surname was Sun, and her family lived at the entrance of the village.

Her husband's surname was Wang, and people called him Wang Er. He was a carpenter.

Su Xiaoxiao felt that Sun was actually quite generous and cheerful. She didn't really know who Su Xiaoxiao was, but she always felt that Sun wanted to keep a distance from Su Xiaoxiao.

Su Xiaoxiao didn't really blame them. Although they were from the same village, they were still strangers, so it was normal for them to be a little wary.

The two children were older than Su Xiaoxiao's children; they were two sons, dressed similarly in grime and looking very shy.

Su Xiaoxiao is a very generous person. On the way, she took out the Changbai cake she bought for Dabao and Xiaobao and gave each of the two children a piece.

The two children had never seen such high-class pastries before. Although they stared at them longingly and swallowed hard, they didn't dare to reach out and take them.

The two children kept glancing at their mother, as if to say, "Can we eat this?"
Su Xiaoxiao smiled and said to Sun Shi, "Sister Sun, please let them eat. It's alright. We're all from the same village, and these pastries were bought for our children."

Mrs. Sun was very grateful to Su Xiaoxiao and nodded. The two children quickly took the long white cake from Su Xiaoxiao and began to wolf it down.

Seeing that Su Xiaoxiao was a very nice and friendly person, Sun lowered her guard and started chatting with her on the way.

Su Xiaoxiao learned that Sun Shi and Wang Er were not from this village; they had fled famine from other places.

Because he was not accepted by the villagers, he lived at the entrance of the village.

Most of the people in this village are surnamed Liu, which actually implies a degree of xenophobia.

“Sister Sun, I don’t have the surname Liu either. Although I married into the Liu family, my husband is now dead, so I still have my own surname. We should keep in touch. So what if we’re not from the same village? I think these villagers are just too old-fashioned. They’ll never progress or get rich if they keep this up.”

Sun was surprised that Su Xiaoxiao's words made a lot of sense, and she began to look at Su Xiaoxiao in a different light.

Su Xiaoxiao escorted Sun Shi and the children to their house at the village entrance. Upon inspection, Su Xiaoxiao noticed that Sun Shi's mud-brick house was quite dilapidated, with window frames fallen off, no paper covering the windows, and drafts leaking out in some places.

There are several large cracks in the walls. How can people live in such a dilapidated house?
Ms. Sun said they had only moved here recently and had no choice but to live here.

Su Xiaoxiao completely understood. Sun had originally invited Su Xiaoxiao to come in and sit for a while, but Su Xiaoxiao refused.

"Sister Sun, I'll come over again when I have time. I have two children at home waiting for me to go back and cook for them. Whenever I have free time, I'll definitely come over as a guest."

Su Xiaoxiao naturally had to refuse; it wasn't quite appropriate to visit someone's home on the first date.

The main reason is that she doesn't know much about Sun's character.

Su Xiaoxiao drove the oxcart back to her home. When she arrived at the gate, she found the yard very quiet. While other houses had smoke rising from their chimneys, hers was the only one without any smoke coming out.

This is understandable, as the two children are still young and cannot be asked to light a fire and cook. Su Xiaoxiao drove her family's oxcart into the yard, and it looks like she will have to build a cowshed.

After unloading the things from the car, she opened the door and went inside. It was very quiet.

Su Xiaoxiao had a bad feeling. Although the front door was still locked properly, just as it had been when she left, she was still quite scared, afraid that something might happen to the two children.

"Da Bao, Xiao Bao, I'm back!"

As soon as Su Xiaoxiao entered the room, she called out to her two children.

The room was quiet, so she quickly put down her things and ran towards the inner room.

Su Xiaoxiao didn't want to think the worst, but she was terrified that her mother-in-law would take advantage of her absence and return to sell the two children to human traffickers.

She hurriedly opened the door to the inner room, only to find a very warm and cozy scene.

The two children, Da Bao and Xiao Bao, were sleeping on the young officer's body.

Su Xiaoxiao finally relaxed, perhaps because she had been too nervous all along.

She went over and wiped the sweat from the children's heads. The young officer opened his eyes first.

"You're back?" Su Xiaoxiao was taken aback for a moment, then replied, "Yes! Have you all eaten?"

The young officer replied, "I ate lunch, but I haven't eaten dinner yet."

He wanted to move around, but the two children pressed him down a bit too firmly.

Su Xiaoxiao realized her arms were probably numb from being pressed down, and quickly picked up the two children. The young officer also had injuries on his body.

Fearing that this might hurt the young officer, and since it was almost time for dinner anyway.

"Da Bao, Er Bao, wake up! Look what delicious treats I bought for you!"

The two children opened their eyes, still sleepy, but they immediately smelled the aroma of pastries.

"What kind of pastry is this? We've never seen it before."

Da Bao looked excitedly at the two exquisite boxes and asked.

"What kind of pastries are inside such a beautiful box?"

Su Xiaoxiao quickly opened it and showed it to them.

"This box contains osmanthus cake, and this box contains Changbai cake. You've probably never tried these before, have you?"

"No, we've never even seen this pastry before."

Da Bao said with a greedy look.

"Here, try it, is it delicious?"

As she spoke, Su Xiaoxiao gave each of the two children a piece of pastry.

The children looked at the delicate frosting on the Changbai cake, and the milky white cake smelled sweet, making their mouths water.

The children enjoyed their meal, and Su Xiaoxiao was very happy too.

"You two eat slowly, it's all yours."

The two children clapped their hands happily.

She glanced at the young officer, took out a piece of osmanthus cake, and asked him, "Would you like some?"

The young officer's lips were pale, and he looked unwell.

He slowly closed his eyes, seemingly indifferent to everything in front of him. Su Xiaoxiao felt that he seemed a little too aloof.

I did save his life, I pulled him back from the brink of death, so why do I always feel like I can't tame him?

Is this man too arrogant? But then Su Xiaoxiao thought, he's not feeling well, so it's not entirely his fault.

Besides, he's so handsome, so it's okay for him to be a little arrogant!
Having no other choice, Su Xiaoxiao went out alone to gather firewood to prepare dinner.

While she was gathering firewood in the yard, she heard someone whispering behind her.

She recognized the voices as coming from her neighbor, Granny Wang's house, and it sounded like Granny Wang and another woman were talking about her.

"Did you see that? Su Xiaoxiao carried a tiger skin to the market to sell this morning."

"Of course! When I got back, I saw she had bought a new oxcart, and it was loaded with lots of things. All good food and useful items. She must have made a lot of money from it, right?"
