Chapter 14 The Church and the Truth
Chapter 14 The Church and the Truth (Thanks to the Silver Alliance of '暖阳1314')
The dead townspeople dragged their stiff bodies and staggered forward. They seemed to have been drained of all moisture in an instant, and became withered and dry, without any breath of life.
Because they didn't have it, they longed for it, and Wayne and William became the primary targets of the siege.
Wayne didn't know how to describe these people, undead, or zombies. If the Death Walker ritual was successful, it would be too weird. Not only did it kill the entire town in an instant, it also wiped out all life, even the breath of the living in the air.
The corpses were swarming, numbering over a hundred, including domestic animals such as chickens and dogs.
Wayne weighed the crowbar in his hand, compared the fighting power of both sides, followed his instinct, closed the door and started the car.
"Where are we going?" William sat in the passenger seat.
"Find Veronica and get the hell out of here as soon as possible."
Wayne looked solemn. The zombies moved slowly and were fragile. He could kill them all in one day with just a crowbar. There was nothing to be afraid of.
For example, if you give a naughty kid a wooden sword, the thickness of the rapeseed field within a radius of ten miles will not exceed one meter.
But the warnings from his supernatural senses were not false. Something terrible was spreading in the town, posing a serious threat to his life everywhere.
Wayne doesn't know much about supernatural magic, so he defines it as a curse.
"Do you know where Veronica is? The town is so big, why don't you retreat first and I'll go find her and Monica." William suggested.
"I know. Just follow the smell."
Wayne reversed the car for a distance, changed gears and accelerated towards the group of zombies.
The chassis of the family sedan is not high, and its good cost-effectiveness also shows that the car is not crash-resistant. The tires rolled over the dried zombies, and the body of the car shook and swayed, and it could only complete a short-distance sprint and could not move forward.
That's enough!
The car broke out of the encirclement and successfully made a passage, completing the mission entrusted to it by Wayne.
William was the first to rush out of the car, waving the crowbar in his hand. The air was whistling as he pulled it open. The approaching zombies were shattered into pieces, and none of them could remain intact under the crowbar.
Out of awe, Wayne kept a certain distance, wielding the crowbar and shouting, "Veronica is in the church. We don't have much time. Hurry up and get her out."
William growled, and with a stick in his hand, he was invincible, and he mowed the grass with unparalleled force.
As for Wayne, zombies and ghosts are two different creatures. He was not panicked at all. After the initial confusion, his dormant muscle memory was awakened, and his body subconsciously used some simple force techniques to ensure output and effectively save physical strength.
Experience points up, +1, +1, +1...
When passing by the small town hotel, two skinny and hunched figures blocked the way. They looked like mummies and were so scary that it was hard to tell what they looked like when they were alive.
Wayne recognized the clothes they were wearing. They were wealthy and generous young ladies, and it was he who stuffed the money into their collars.
The voice and smile were still in his mind. Wayne thought it was a pity, waved the crowbar with tears in his eyes, picked up the money and quickly caught up with William.
Flames shot up into the sky in the town, and the hot air intensified the evaporation of water. The strange thing was that no matter how fierce the fire was, it could not burn down the wooden buildings, and even the flammable zombies could not be ignited.
The two arrived breathlessly at the church at the end of the street. It was the only building in the town that was not surrounded by flames. Compared with the hell on earth around it, the quiet church seemed out of place.
At the sound of a gunshot, Wayne and William were both startled, and they rushed over the fence and lawn, and used their strength to break open the church door.
There were rows of benches neatly arranged in the room, and in front of the cross, candles flickered with dim light. The priest was dressed in a black robe with neat edges and was dressed meticulously, but his withered face was really unflattering, and was no different from the chaotic zombies outside.
The priest also lost his life because of the sacrifice.
Veronica was holding a pistol and confronting the priest. She had just fired a shot, hitting the priest in the chest, leaving a large hole visible to the naked eye.
"You don't need to stop the ceremony. This town has been dead for many years. It's time for the townspeople to rest in peace." The priest's upper and lower jaws closed, making a rotten sound buried deep underground.
Veronica called out to William, who immediately understood what she meant, strode forward, and swung the crowbar at her.
A white halo bloomed under Veronica's feet, and the holy light enveloped her, blocking her from leaving and casting magic in the cell.
The prison is a magic cast by priests, also known as divine magic within the Vatican. It is a power bestowed upon them by God that can imprison evil and keep it quiet to listen to the glory of the Lord.
It sounds powerful, but it can be broken from the outside, so it's not invincible.
Moreover, the version has not been updated for a long time, and the gun patches have been applied for several generations, but the magic of the Holy See is still the same old one, not keeping up with the times at all.
With William's efforts, Veronica quickly escaped from the cage. She punched her side, shattering the white light and releasing Monica, who was also imprisoned in solitary confinement.
The black cat blends into the environment and you can't see her at all unless she speaks.
"What does it mean that the townspeople have been dead for many years?" Monica asked coldly. The strange moon made her very uncomfortable. She felt that it was a blasphemy against the Moon Goddess, so she had to get to the bottom of it.
"Fifty years ago, the town of Kafuno was cursed, and the townspeople became the living dead. They didn't know they were dead, they could breathe and have heartbeats, they could bleed when injured, they could grow old and give birth to offspring, and everyone was still alive..."
"The dead are dead after all. The Nelson family discovered the truth, and those in the town who knew the truth were invited to attend the meeting. I was one of them..."
"The Nelson family is a believer of the goddess of death. They demanded that a ceremony be held immediately to return the dead to the embrace of death. The mayor and council members disagreed. No one is willing to give up their lives, and no one has the right to end the lives of others. Besides, everyone is not really dead, and they can end their lives like normal people."
"I support the mayor and councillors..."
"The Nelson family insisted on their own opinion and took a very tough attitude. They called together all the family members outside the family. They insisted on holding the ceremony and started a massacre that night..."
"We won and vowed to bury the secret of that night. We agreed that as long as we concealed the truth, the townspeople would not know that they were dead. Everyone would grow old, get sick and die like ordinary people until young people took over the town."
The priest is like an NPC, mechanically narrating the past fifty years. Because of his own magical attainments, he retained his obsession and hoped that the heir of the Nelson family would complete the ceremony.
But that was all. The priest's thinking had long been rotten. He answered whatever was asked and said everything without reservation.
"Time has proven us wrong. Every year on this day, the flames will sweep across the town back to that night..."
"The dead will crawl out of their graves, the living will reveal their true appearance, the town has no future, because newborns will lose their lives the moment they are conceived, and outsiders will be cursed for entering this place..."
"This is not a curse, it should be a constant death, a kind of law that tortures us and prevents us from resting."
"I gradually realized my mistake. In order to keep the abscess alive, we removed healthy tissue..."
"Wait a minute!"
Wayne interrupted the story and said solemnly: "Outsiders will also be infected with the curse. What does this mean?"
