Chapter 44 Selling the First Bowl

The man wanted something sweet, so Jiang Wan added a large spoonful of brown sugar, put a spoon there, and handed him a bowl of mint water.

The man drank half a bowl of it impatiently, exhaled a breath of fresh air, and couldn't help but exclaimed: "This thing cools down the summer heat, and I feel alive after drinking it... Auntie, you have to come again tomorrow..."

After the first bowl was sold, the second bowl, the third bowl, and the fourth bowl soon came... There were a total of forty-three people on the construction site, and forty of them bought mint water.

The remaining three people probably came from really poor families and just held back and didn’t come over.

Jiang Wan took a look in the bucket. There were at least seventy or eighty bowls of mint water. They definitely couldn't be sold here, so they had to find another place.

She wondered where to go next.

Ye Dahe and Ye Sanshu sat on the side counting money excitedly.

Ye Dahe was stunned: "It's eighty-four coins in total. Oh my god, how can you make so much in one day!"

Ye Sanshu also looked incredulous: "Carrying a large bag only makes 40 cents a day, but selling mint water can make 84 cents. Our family is going to be rich!"

Jiang Wan: "..."

Can these two guys stop looking so ignorant?

She said angrily, "The brown sugar in the mint water cost sixty cents, and these porcelain bowls and spoons cost thirty cents. We haven't even made back the cost. Why are you so happy?"

Ye Dahe and Ye Sanshu's faces immediately fell.

The two of them counted on their fingers to figure out how much they needed to make money, but they couldn't figure it out.

Jiang Wan packed up his things and said, "Let's have a drink first, and then go to the next place."

Ye Dahe and Ye Sanshu picked up two loads of things and followed her to the street.

Although the morning market was over, there were still many food and drink stalls on the street. Jiang Wan sat down at a noodle stall.

Ye Sanshu immediately grabbed her and said, "Mom, I just need to eat the buns..."

A vegetarian bun costs two cents, but a bowl of noodles here costs eight cents. They have to sell four bowls of mint water to make their money back.

Ye Dahe shook his head violently: "Mom, let's go back and drink. Xiaohui must have made a lot of delicious food..."

"Eat when I tell you to!" Jiang Wan looked at his two silly sons with some worry, "How can you have the energy to work if you don't eat enough? We still have to continue selling mint water later. We can go back after we sell all the peppermint water."

Ye Dahe and Ye Sanshu had no choice but to sit down.

The boss quickly brought over three bowls of noodles. As the aroma wafted over, Ye Sanshu's saliva instantly flowed out and dripped onto the table. He quickly wiped it clean with his sleeve when no one was looking.

Jiang Wan picked up the chopsticks: "Eat quickly."

Ye Dahe and Ye Sanshu buried their heads in eating the noodles. They gobbled them up in no time, even finishing up the noodle soup.

Jiang Wan couldn't bear to watch this scene, so she turned around and talked to the noodle stall owner: "Sister-in-law, did you know that there is a school in our Lotus Town?"

"The largest school in our Hehua Town is Ping'an School, which was founded by an old scholar. However, the old scholar is old and has forgotten a lot." The boss lowered his voice, "Now many people send their children to study in the neighboring Ankang Town. Ankang Town was founded by a scholar. Only by studying there can you have a bright future."

Jiang Wan vaguely remembered that Jiang Huai, the most promising child of the Jiang family, seemed to be studying in a school in Ankang Town, called Huaifu Academy.

She had a plan in mind and asked, "How long does it take to get to Ankang Town from here?"

"It's not far. We'll be there in half an hour's walk."

Jiang Wan thanked the boss, paid twenty-four coins for noodles, and then took her two sons to Ankang Town. It was noon now, and there were no oxcarts at the town gate, so the mother and her two sons could only walk there. At the end of noon, they finally saw the gate of Ankang Town.

With just one look, Jiang Wan felt that Ankang Town was more economically developed than Hehua Town. There were people coming and going everywhere. Not far away, there was a big river on the edge of the city. There were sporadic boats on the sinking river. The dock was probably even more lively.

There were not many people in Hehua Town after the morning market, but Ankang Town was still crowded with people.

Ye Dahe and Ye Sanshu looked left and right, their eyes were not enough. It was their first time in Ankang Town, and everything was new to them.

Jiang Wan took her son across the street. She habitually glanced at the grain store. The food in Ankang Town was not cheap either. The price of corn had risen to nine cents, and white rice and flour were not put on sale at all. It was probably because they knew that ordinary people could not afford them.

When she turned her head, she saw a woman kneeling on the ground in front of the grain store, and next to her was a skinny girl with a pale face, about four or five years old.

The woman's tears kept falling: "We are out of food at home. If things continue like this, all the children will starve to death. I have no choice but to give this girl away. She can be taken away for 200 copper coins. Please be kind..."

The four-year-old girl cried very pitifully, looking at the onlookers with her big eyes, her eyes full of panic.

Jiang Wan's mood was extremely complicated.

If she were in this situation, she would rather starve to death than sell the child she had carried for ten months.

Two hundred coins to buy a maid back home is not expensive at all, but this maid is not the only one in the world who was forced to sell herself in exchange for food...

As the disaster continues to worsen, more and more people will sell their children, and most of those sold will probably be girls.

Jiang Wan withdrew his gaze and continued walking forward with his two sons with heavy steps.

At the end of this street, you will reach the famous Huaifu Academy in Ankang Town.

This academy was jointly founded by the government and a scholar. The teachers invited were at least scholars. After the outstanding children from nearby towns reached a certain level of education, they would gather here to study.

In other words, those who study here either have a talent for studying or come from a family with plenty of money.

There are also some small stalls in front of the school, but most of them sell pens, ink, paper and inkstones, as well as books and paintings. The place is filled with the scent of books.

As soon as Jiang Wan opened her stall, the boss kindly reminded her, "Huaifu Academy has a cafeteria. The students here basically don't go out to buy these drinks and food. Auntie, you should go to another place."

"Thanks for the reminder." Jiang Wan said with a smile, "Since we are here, let's give it a try."

Ye Sanshu had borrowed a table, and the mother and her two sons laid out the mint water for tasting in a row. Just as they finished, a bell rang in the academy.

When the bell rang, the vendors at the door immediately stood up straight, looking energetic and ready to welcome customers.

Soon, students came out of the academy in groups of three or five.

They were wearing the same white and blue college uniforms, and looked like a group of handsome young men, quite pleasing to the eye.

Jiang Wan and his two sons started shouting.

"Mint water for sale, refreshing mint water!"

"Free tasting, quantity is limited, first come first served!"

Several stall owners nearby were stunned.

This is a college, a sacred place for reading and writing. Why is this woman yelling regardless of the occasion?
