Reborn in the 1980s: I made my fortune hunting wild game in Changbai Mountain
Chapter 732 The Wild Boars' Plan to Lift the Blanket
Having already discussed a preliminary plan to bring the prey down the mountain, the group was quite enthusiastic about cutting down pine trees.
They can't handle old pine trees that are too thick; they specifically choose dead trees that are about the size of a bowl.
First, use a hand axe to knock the tree down from the base, then simply prune the branches.
After processing the pine trunk, tie a rope to the bottom of the pine log.
A person can drag the tree back to camp by carrying a rope on their shoulder.
Once the tree trunk was brought back, it was quickly sawn into pine logs with a handsaw. To burn overnight, a few logs were simply placed in the stove, and the fire would burn for a long time.
Before nightfall, each of the four Yue brothers dragged back at least two dead pine trees to the camp, then sawed them down and simply stacked them at the camp entrance for easy access.
As darkness fell, everyone returned to their tents, gathered around the stove to warm themselves, and then prepared dinner.
Dinner consisted of compressed dry rations and dried meat, along with lard and pickled vegetables brought from home, and handmade wild boar sausages.
Although it's not particularly delicious, it's high in fat, so it keeps you full for a while, and it tastes pretty good.
Around 5 p.m., the group had finished dinner, and then the four brothers arranged their night shifts.
After finishing all these trivial matters, Yue Feng crouched down and crawled out of the tent, then walked around the perimeter of the camp for a long time.
This was the wilderness camping experience that Wu Keji had taught him. As the leader, he was responsible for everyone. He couldn't slack off on the morning and evening patrols of the camp.
Even though Yuefeng's hunting team is strong and well-equipped, they still cannot let their guard down once they are deep in the mountains.
Yue Feng used tire cords and canned food boxes to set up several small alarm traps in suitable locations around the camp. After confirming that everything around the camp was normal, he returned to his tent.
After a day of traveling and activities, everyone was tired.
Inside the tent, Xiao Tao and Xiao Wen were both snoring, while Xiao Wu sat on a leather cushion, pretending to doze off while on night watch.
"Brother! Is everything around here normal?" Xiaowu asked in a low voice.
Yue Feng responded, "Everything's normal. I've set up a few small devices. If anything gets close enough to trigger them, you'll hear the tin can making a sound! Be a little more alert when you're on night duty!"
"Don't worry, we have eagles, dogs, and automatic rifles, what are we afraid of! No one can do anything about it!" Xiaowu said confidently.
"Hehe, okay! I'm going to sleep now. Call the next shift when it's time!"
"Ok!"
After a brief exchange, Yue Feng leaned his gun against the inner wall of the tent, then curled up into the roe deer skin blanket, rested his head on the folded hunting bag, and closed his eyes.
The old forest was bustling with activity after nightfall.
During the day, you rarely see small animals, but in the dead of night, you can hear the calls of owls and other unknown animals, at least several of which are indistinguishable.
Yue Feng didn't sleep soundly. At the slightest sound of wind or noise outside, he would open his eyes and listen quietly for a while before going back to sleep to make sure there was no danger.
And so, the first night after entering the mountains passed.
From 3:00 AM to 5:30 AM, it is Yue Feng's nighttime.
After being woken up by Xiao Tao, he sat on his bedding and didn't go back to sleep.
When it was just getting light outside, Yue Feng got up, filled a pot with snow, and started boiling the snow water. Once the snow water was ready, he prepared breakfast for everyone.
At 5:50 a.m., the other team members in the camp woke up.
Breakfast was ready in the pot, and everyone ate their fill of hot food. Then they organized their guns, magazines, knives, and other tools, and prepared to set off.
As mentioned more than once before, wild boar herds that stay in their burrows during winter almost never get up early to move around. The herds only start moving around and foraging when the sun is already quite high in the sky.
Overnight, a pig will have a full bladder of urine, which will slow it down considerably.
This wasn't the first time Yue Feng and his hunting team had provided a morning wake-up service for the wild boar herd. After getting their gear ready, they quickly stepped out of their tents.
"Brother, are we still taking the Dog Gang with us?"
Just before setting off, Xiao Tao casually asked a question.
Logically speaking, it wouldn't make much sense to raid a pigsty with only three rifles and bring along a gang of dogs.
After all, a volley of fire consists of seventy bullets, which averages out to several bullets per prey. Dogs aren't very useful in this type of combat.
Yue Feng hesitated for a moment: "Let's bring them! Our dogs can all understand commands and won't bark randomly! In case of any emergencies, the dogs will increase the margin for error!"
"And what about the eagle?"
"Since we're already here, let's bring the eagle along!"
"okay!"
After a brief exchange, Eagle and Dog set off from the camp, heading straight for the wild boar den they had scouted the day before.
Everyone was quite quiet along the way.
The hunting dogs following their owner were initially a bit noisy, but after Yue Feng scolded them a few times and gave them a gag order, the dogs all switched to vibrate mode and stopped barking.
The group of guys followed the route they had taken yesterday, heading straight into the depths of the red pine forest. In less than an hour, they arrived at the outskirts of the wild boar's den, which was less than 500 meters away.
"The wild boar's den is just ahead. There's no wind this morning, which is a bit of a disadvantage for us!" Yue Feng whispered.
"So what do you suggest? If there's no wind, there's no wind. We'll sneak over quietly. Do you think it'll wake up early and run away?"
Xiaowu held the gun, unconcerned.
Yue Feng glanced at Xiao Wu but didn't respond. He continued, "This mountain area is a gentle slope, so even if we climb to the top of the ridge, we won't have much of a view advantage!"
We have three guns now, more than enough firepower. It would be best to get close and finish the fight in one go!
"Which side should we approach from? Since there's no wind, it shouldn't matter which side we approach from, right?" Xiaowen asked casually.
Yue Feng: "That's true, but we also need to consider the direction the wild boar herd will flee in! What if they get startled beforehand?"
Let's take a longer route and attack from the best vantage point, the upper right!
"Should we all go over there? Or flank from both sides?" Xiao Tao continued to ask.
Yue Feng: "Of course, we'll flank them! Xiao Tao, you come with me to the upper right, and Xiao Wu, you and Xiao Wen will attack from the mountainside at eye level!"
With guns on both sides, the pigs will be startled and will most likely run downhill.
The view over there isn't great, and there are a lot of saplings at the bottom of the ditch. Xiaowu, you should be prepared for that!
Also, avoid burst fire in actual combat. A full 30-round burst takes only a few seconds, and if you don't aim well, you'll waste bullets. Prioritize stability!
Xiaowu nodded: "Okay, I'll be careful! I brought over a hundred rounds of ammunition with me this time, so I won't be short of bullets!"
"Alright, split into two groups and set off! We'll move together based on hand signals! Xiaowen, you don't have a gun, be careful!"
"no problem!"
……
After a brief exchange, Yue Feng, along with Xiao Tao, each carrying a gun, headed towards the ridge to the upper right, slowly approaching the wild boar's den.
The two brothers, Xiaowen and Xiaowu, were also slowly approaching the wild boar's den from the mountainside below.
As for the dog, it must have gone with its owner, Yue Feng.
These dogs all knew their owner was coming out to raid the pigsty today, and they followed behind very quietly.
The most outrageous thing was that when he saw Yue Feng crouching down to approach the mountain ridge, Canglong even followed suit and crouched down to inch forward.
As they drew closer, the outline of the wild boar's den gradually became clearer. From a distance, a plume of white steam could be seen drifting and spreading into the forest from the den.
Yue Feng squinted and observed for a few seconds, then nodded to Xiao Tao.
The wild boar herd returned to their den last night, and everything went smoothly.
Xiao Tao pointed to a spot closer to the pigsty.
Beside the ridge, there are two large, solitary trees; that would make a good shooting position.
The two brothers, in perfect unison, crouched down and continued adjusting their positions. Once in place, they turned to look at the Zhang brothers on the hillside below.
The brothers Xiaowen and Xiaowu didn't need to take a detour and had already arrived at their designated positions. When they saw Yuefeng turn around, Xiaowu nodded to him.
Yue Feng raised his right hand and gestured with three fingers.
Three seconds later, Yue Feng pressed his right hand down heavily, immediately aimed his gun, and pulled the trigger towards the wild boar's den.
Bang bang bang!
A series of rifle bullets fired echoed throughout the pine forest.
The wild boars, who were still half asleep just a moment ago, were suddenly awakened by the sound of bullets.
Chase!
A piercing scream rang out, and a large, fat sow weighing over 350 pounds suddenly sprang up from its sty and ran wildly toward the bottom of the ditch.
Before he could run a few meters, he was swept to the ground by crossfire!
The number of wild boars was slightly more than the group had estimated yesterday.
According to Yue Feng's initial visual estimate, there were at least seventeen or eighteen wild boars, including the larger ones.
Three rifles opened fire on the prey in the pigsty, and instantly more than half of the wild boars were hit by bullets and lay prone on the ground.
Seeing the wild boars swarm out, Xiao Tao and Xiao Wu initially fired single shots rhythmically, but after realizing their firepower was a bit slow and many boars had escaped, they almost simultaneously switched their safety to burst fire mode.
In an instant, the sounds of bang! bang! bang! turned into a burst of gunfire.
Compared to the rapid-fire of 30 rounds each from Xiao Tao and Xiao Wu's automatic AK47s, Yue Feng's Type 56 semi-automatic rifle was much more composed.
Yue Feng, like an extremely calm killing machine, slowly and deliberately pulled the trigger on the fleeing wild boar below.
Several wild boars that had escaped from the pigsty were taken down by Yue Feng.
Click!
Xiao Tao emptied his first magazine of thirty rounds, and the sound of the magazine going out of commission was heard.
Yue Feng also pulled the trigger to fire the last bullet, then took out a pre-loaded clip from his pocket, and without even looking at it, directly loaded ten new bullets into the magazine.
He raised the gun back to his face, aimed at the wild boar that had run the furthest away, and pulled the trigger.
On the other side, Xiaowu's rifles also ceased firing.
He wasn't very skilled at reloading the AK47, which took him a few seconds longer.
Although Yue Feng had warned Xiao Tao and Xiao Wu before opening fire, the two still couldn't hold back the bullets during the first round of concentrated fire when they saw the stampede of pigs.
Rapid fire gives people a very exhilarating feeling; if you loosen your grip on the trigger even slightly, several bullets will be fired, though some will inevitably be wasted.
This means that the theoretical firepower of seventy bullets in one round has been reduced to a certain extent!
The end result was that not all the wild boars trapped in the pigsty were killed; instead, three or four survivors escaped.
Yue Feng was the first to change his bullets and continued to raise his gun to call out names until he saw the last two wild boars run further and further away along the bottom of the ditch and disappear from sight. Only then did he lower his gun.
At this point, Xiao Tao and Xiao Wu had changed their magazines, but when they tried to find prey again, they could no longer see any trace of it.
"Damn it, the remaining pigs escaped!" Xiao Tao muttered regretfully.
"Don't just stand there! Hurry up and bleed out the prey. I'll take the Dog Gang to give chase. Whether we catch them or not, we'll come back here to meet up!"
Yue Feng gave a shout, then yelled at the dogs who were already itching to pounce: "Canglong, chase them away!"
In Yue Feng's plan, the escaped wild boars would advance in a straight line along the bottom of the ditch. Once they were outside the red pine forest, the trees would be much sparser. At that time, with the help of the eagle and the dog, it would be no problem to leave one or two more boars behind.
Upon hearing its master's command, Canglong took the lead and chased after the wild boar in the direction it had fled.
There was no need to keep quiet now. The Azure Dragon chased after them, calling out to guide its brothers and master.
Yue Feng also took off with his long legs and chased after the hunting dog, running wildly behind it.
Overall, the raid this morning was definitely successful, leaving behind at least a dozen wild boars.
However, in actual combat, Xiao Tao and Xiao Wu's performance with automatic rifles was still somewhat lacking.
Yue Feng followed the hunting dog and chased after them for at least a mile.
The dog is no longer visible, but the roar of the Azure Dragon can still be heard in the distant woods.
A while later, on his pursuit, Yue Feng found a yellow-haired wild boar with a bullet wound in its lung. It weighed no more than 80 or 90 pounds and had collapsed to the ground, dead.
Yue Feng grabbed the pig by its hind legs and hung it on the nearest tree branch. Then he made a cut on the pig's carotid artery and cut its belly to remove the entrails. He continued chasing after the pig without even cutting open the entrails.
According to the normal script, the dog, with its speed advantage, should be able to catch at least one or two, or even more, wild boars.
But after Yue Feng chased after them for a while, he suddenly heard a dog's terrified howl coming from afar.
ow~~
Then came a series of irregular barks from the dogs!
The four wolfhounds in my house all have very tough personalities. When they were puppies, they would bite brooms and cause trouble in the house, and even when they got beaten, they would never cry out or beg for mercy!
I rarely made such fearful cries when I went into the mountains with hunting teams before.
Hearing the dog's pitiful cries, Yue Feng's heart sank.
Damn it, could it be bad luck that I've run into some troublesome prey?
Yue Feng hurriedly raised his gun, aimed it into the air, and pulled the trigger, while simultaneously blowing a whistle.
Hounds and hawks can hear gunshots and whistles; these are signals to call them back.
After firing the shot, Yue Feng continued running forward, a sense of unease creeping into his heart.
After chasing for about five minutes, the four dogs returned.
From a distance, Yue Feng could see that Black Tiger's left front paw dared not touch the ground, and when it ran back, only three paws were on the ground.
When Yue Feng got closer and saw the dog's injuries, he felt a chill run down his spine and was a little scared.
Good heavens, on Black Tiger's face and the upper half of his left foreleg, there were two bloody cuts from sharp claws, with the flesh turned upside down.
Even without seeing the instigator, Yue Feng already had a preliminary answer in his mind.
Lynx! Eighty percent of them are these things!
Besides the lynx, the second most likely suspect is the Amur leopard, but these creatures are too rare, so the probability is relatively small.
The lynx is nicknamed "tiger cub," and that's no exaggeration; in Northeast China, it's also known as the nemesis of wolves.
For even a mature hunting dog with wolf blood to suffer a loss, it's highly likely that it encountered tiger cubs during the chase. (End of Chapter)
