Forest protection starts with picking up a lynx girl

Chapter 527 Little Altai: Who is lost? I just fell and hurt my head!

The group of people didn't dare to go in, for fear of disturbing the lynx.

Chen Ying entered the house with a bag of food for Medi, trying to lure the lynx out.

But the problem was that this lynx didn't consider itself a guest at all, and was not interested in the food that Chen Ying brought. It stretched out its body and rolled over on the bed, looking as leisurely and comfortable as a domestic animal.

Judging from this guy's series of actions and expressions, Chen Ying really felt that it was most likely raised by humans, otherwise it would not be so familiar with human homes.

The city of YN is close to Kazakhstan, and this neighboring country allows private breeding of lynxes, but there are also conditions and restrictions, requiring private breeders to abide by the laws of their country and provide information proving that they have the conditions and expertise to breed lynxes.

Then again, to be able to raise a ferocious animal like a lynx requires that one is no ordinary person.

Chen Ying put the bowl of food on the table and went to the bed to pull the lynx's hind legs. This guy thought Chen Ying was playing with it, and like a big cat, he hugged Chen Ying's forearm and sucked it gently, making a slight purring sound, then let go, let out a short "wow", and turned around to crawl into the quilt.

"Come out here! You're so dirty! How can I sleep if you get in here?"

Chen Ying's face turned black. He grabbed its short tail, then quickly changed hands, hugged its abdomen, and dragged the lynx out.

Even his Jin Ya is not so shameless. This scoundrel lynx really doesn't consider himself an outsider.

After Chen Ying came in, Klaus and Medi on the bed next door gradually became bolder.

The most important thing was the behavior of this lynx. Klaas, who specializes in studying Iberian lynxes, also realized that it might have been raised by humans.

After watching for a while, Medi jumped onto Chen Ying's bed again, hiding beside him and observing the lynx quietly. She really bore the words "brave but cowardly" clearly on her head.

The result of the tug-of-war with the lynx is failure. After all, can you be cruel to such a stubborn and furry thing acting like a spoiled child to you? It just wants to return to a safe place and have a comfortable sleep.

Chen Ying took out a small blanket from the cupboard and covered the lynx with it. The lynx then lay on its back with the blanket covering its belly and fell asleep comfortably.

The window was crowded with staff members who came to see the curio. Everyone found it incredible that this lynx was more docile than a big cat.

The little coward Medi approached tentatively for a while, but probably because she stared at the lynx for too long, she became sleepy and soon curled up beside the lynx and fell asleep.

While it's fun to watch, we still need to investigate how this big cat, which is suspected to be raised by humans, came to the wetland.

Theoretically, it is possible for wild animals from neighboring countries to travel long distances across the border, but in reality, the national wetland park is still a long distance away from the national border, and the lynx's activity range is usually limited, making it difficult for them to cross such a long distance.

Another reason is that lynx prefer forests and mountains, and may lack suitable habitats and food resources during migration. In addition, there are many human settlements along the way, and facilities such as roads and fences will hinder the migration of lynx.

So the inexplicable appearance of this lynx in the wetland park made its origin suspicious. Coupled with its friendly attitude towards humans, everyone's first reaction was that someone in the country might have raised it.

Of course, there is another possibility that someone rescued the lynx, fed it regularly, and even allowed it to live with them, but did not restrict the lynx's freedom. It is difficult to determine whether this behavior is illegal.

Just like the leopard cat they encountered on the way to Baishui River National Reserve, it is not illegal in the subjective sense, but this behavior cannot be supported.

Just when they were worrying about this familiar lynx, the staff of the Altai Mountains Two River Source Nature Reserve, which has a cooperation with Kazakhstan, received a request for help from zoologist Alexei.

During a field survey, he accidentally found a lynx cub abandoned by its mother. Out of respect for life and a sense of responsibility as a scientist, Alexi decided to rescue the little lynx and named it "Altai". He wanted this poor little thing to grow into a powerful beast like the Altai Mountains.

Little Altai was raised by Alexey himself and lived in the wild in the Altai Mountains with his biped.

Alexei has a small farm here and spends most of the year observing and rescuing wildlife here.

Little Altai is one and a half years old this year, and is at his most naughty. Because he has lived with humans for a long time, he does not have much stress response to humans. However, the little guy is a smart child. He can distinguish the good and evil of humans by their breath. He is wary of strangers, but shows closeness and trust to Alexei and his colleagues.

Alexey always wanted to let Altai return to the wild, and he never restricted its movements. The little guy grew up freely on the small farm and nearby mountains and forests. Occasionally, he would go out for a few days and always return to the farm and to Alexey.

This time, Alexey and his colleagues were investigating the activities of snow leopards in the central and southern Altai Mountains when they encountered a brown bear that had awakened from hibernation. While avoiding it, Alexey's colleague accidentally fell. At the critical moment, little Altai rushed out and charged at the brown bear with his not-so-strong body.

Its actions successfully saved Alexey's colleagues, but angered the brown bear.

While dodging flexibly, little Altai accidentally fell from the tree and rolled down the cliff.

The brown bear stayed on the edge of the cliff for two or three hours before leaving.

After it left, Alexei and his colleagues found a way to get down to the bottom of the cliff, but they found traces of the snow leopard nearby.

According to their previous survey results, the snow leopard's activity area rarely reaches this altitude, but infrared cameras have previously captured active snow leopards near a ski resort not far from here, so Alexey and his team inferred that the snow leopard population should have increased and the territory was expanding simultaneously.

In addition, traces of marten were found under the cliff.

Although the sable is small in size, it has the word "bear" in its name and is not a docile breed.

However, it is rare for a sable to hunt a lynx. It is more likely that a snow leopard dragged away the injured Altai cub.

But after carefully examining the traces, they guessed that little Altai might have fallen and been injured, and found a place to hide to avoid other wild animals.

So they searched under the cliff for two or three days, but they didn't see any lynx hair. Instead, they almost ran into a sable bear with its cub in its mouth during the search.

Alexey temporarily asked a good friend to come and help with the search. That friend's ancestors had always been hunters, and identifying animal traces was a skill engraved in his family's genes.

It was this friend who suggested that they seek help from the Kazakhstan State Forest Administration after searching for a day. The staff of the administration contacted the Chinese Forest Park Administration through the international cooperation system. Although it was not certain whether Little Altai had really entered China, Alexey did not want to give up as long as there was a glimmer of hope.

He had various photos and videos of little Altai from childhood to adulthood. After sending them to the relevant personnel on the Chinese side, they compared them and found that an infrared camera that had recently approached the Kazakh side had taken photos that were suspected to be of little Altai.

But what is confusing is that Xiao Altai did not move towards the farm. Instead, it entered the Chinese territory along the southern section of the Altai Mountains and showed signs of moving deeper into the interior.

Coincidentally, the wetland park suspected that someone was privately raising lynxes and reported it to the Wildlife Conservation Department of the Forestry and Grassland Bureau. Before the investigation was launched, the staff of the Wildlife Conservation Department received a call from the Altai Mountain Forest Management Office, asking whether a Eurasian lynx had been rescued.

Both sides have provided photos. How can you not understand after comparing them?

Once we find the source, this matter will be easy.

After passing the message through an intermediary, Alexei felt relieved and asked someone for Chen Ying's email address. Alexei sent an email of thanks as soon as possible.

Chen Ying also took a photo of little Altai and sent it to the other party, along with a medical examination report of little Altai.

That’s right, Chen Ying caught this little guy and took him for a check-up.

While petting the cat, Chen Ying discovered that little Altai seemed to have some problems with its bones. In addition to the newly healed wounds on its fur, she was worried that it might have internal injuries, so she quickly contacted the local rescue center and took little Altai for a detailed full-body examination overnight.

The result was not bad. This little guy had thick skin and flesh. Except for the front limbs which might have been fractured when he fell down the mountain, the other injuries were just minor skin injuries. It should have healed if it was discovered a few days later.

There is no need to put a splint on a fractured bone. Just shave the hair, apply medicine, and wrap it with a bandage. It will recover in ten days or half a month.

The bigger problem now is how to correct the character of our dear lynx.

Alexey also said that he had thought of many ways, even taking the little Altai to a farther place to release it, but it would eventually find the small farm, unless he gave up the small farm, which was obviously unlikely. The small farm is not only a farm, but also serves as an animal protection observation and rescue workstation.

Originally, Alexei wanted to apply to come to China to pick up little Altai, but after knowing that Chen Ying and the others would go to Kazakhstan in a few days, Alexei decided to wait for them at the opposite port and then invite them to stay on the small farm for a few days.

Chen Ying is quite interested in Alexei's current scientific research. After all, lynx and snow leopard are also his favorite animals.

There are still four days left before leaving the country.

During these four days, there were always people in the small courtyard where they lived.

The story of little Altai was spread by Kras, and everyone wanted to see this little hero who bravely rescued the scientific expedition personnel from the mouth of a brown bear, even though the little hero was a big cat who did not understand human language.

However, little Altai was not happy, he just felt annoyed. With so many people around every day, how could he sleep well? Didn't he know that he could only recover from his injuries if he slept well and ate well? Oh!
Fortunately, everyone was not the kind of person who really didn't know their limits. Most of them just came to the outside of the yard, took a look and left. Occasionally, a few familiar people came to see the lynx and did not forget to bring some food to feed it.

By the third day, there were basically not many people coming to visit. Only a few staff members from the management office would come to deliver meals and observe the condition of little Altai.

The timid little cat Medi was curious and wanted to get closer, but every time she approached quietly, the moment little Altai opened his eyes, her fur would stand on end and she would run away madly.

In three or four days, Medi's activity level was much greater than the total of the previous week.

The little Altai has a very average acceptance of the food being fed to it, and prefers to find food on its own. In recent times, the small animals by the river have been a bit miserable, trembling every day under the threat of a decrease in the animal population.

Medi didn't dare to follow in the first two days, but these two days she followed quietly behind, watching the lynx hunting stealthily, and learned a lot of experience.

The two big cats’ favorite snack at the moment is rat strips, specifically the big-tailed rat strips that live in trees.

The animals here are really brave. Even though several of their companions have been killed by lynxes, they still come down from the trees for a bag of dried fruits. No, not dried fruits, a small box of blueberries can lure them down.

(A family of squirrels in Kunming Cuihu Park. They are very greedy and will flock to eat fruit if you feed them)
Klas had never fed squirrels like this before, so he bought several kinds of sweet fruits at his own expense and sat in the yard every morning and evening to feed the little animals.

In addition to squirrels, there are also various small birds, chirping and swooping down to eat rice grains and plant fruits.

Every time I feed the birds and squirrels, I would lock those two big killers in the room. Then they would sit obediently in front of the window, staring at the squirrels and birds and drooling.

Before, Medi didn’t eat live animals very often. Although she was a forest cat, she was actually a pet cat. She had been eating cat food and freeze-dried food since she was a child. She would only try a few bites of mouse meat at most and would give up eating it because it tasted bad.

After spending two or three days with the little Altai, he would eat anything he could catch, whether it was flying in the sky, swimming in the water, or running on the ground. Klas was so angry that he didn't want to hold it to sleep, for fear that he would faint from the smell of its mouth.

Five days later, they received a notice that all formalities had been completed and they could pass through the port at any time.

Because little Altai's identity is rather special, the Provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau had a special video call with them, and the local relevant departments also came to understand the situation. Finally, they agreed to let Chen Ying and his team take little Altai through customs.

The original procedures were very complicated. After all, they are animals, so they must go through inspection and quarantine before they can pass customs.

But this lynx is a native species of the Altai Mountains. It is not an animal in my country. However, it came here on its own and did not go through the customs declaration process. This time, it can either go through customs or be released here and let it cross the border on its own.

In the end, special matters were handled specially. Staff from the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of YN City accompanied us through customs, and staff from the National Forest Administration of Kazakhstan coordinated with us at their port. Only then was the border crossing problem of Little Altai solved.

After passing the level, when little Altai saw Alexei, he rushed over and cried loudly, sounding particularly aggrieved.

Alexei's eyes also turned red. He hugged little Altai and kept apologizing in a low voice and asking if it was okay.

Although the man and the beast do not speak the same language and even speak their own language, their concern for each other is genuine.
