The Devil Comes to America

Chapter 169: Mortal Concerns

Chapter 169: Mortal Concerns
Jim was a little surprised when he saw the incoming call on his phone.

But he still answered the phone: "Director."

"Hey, Jim." Hansen's voice was full of energy on the other end of the phone; "Are you kidding me? You are the director now!"

"No, in my heart, you are the director."

"Okay, Jim, there's no need for these damn polite words between us. Can I ask you something?"

"Of course, just ask. You know what I can't tell you anyway."

"You bastard, have you already started to talk like that?" Hansen said unhappily, but still asked, "It's nothing. Are you still investigating the case of the sweatshirt man?"

Jim was slightly startled. Why did this person suddenly care about this matter?

After thinking about how to answer, Jim said, "Chief, do you think that's a case that we at LAPD can investigate? Wilson was hung on a street lamp in front of the FBI. If I still cover up this case, do you believe that a group of FBI will come to investigate me tomorrow?"

Hansen didn't seem surprised and just asked, "So, you handed over all the information you investigated to the FBI?"

"What did I investigate?" Jim asked curiously, "Why don't I remember this happening? Although I was in charge of this matter at the time, as you know, there were many more important cases in Los Angeles than the hoodie man, all on my desk. Of course, if I investigated, I would definitely hand over the information to the FBI. After all, we have to cooperate in the investigation."

Hansen laughed. "You are becoming more and more like a director, Jim. Let me ask you a personal question. How far do you think the FBI has investigated this matter?"

Jim was a little surprised: "Why are you asking this director all of a sudden?"

"Retirement life is too boring. If you hire me back as a consultant, I will definitely not bother you, Jim."

Jim was dissatisfied when he heard this and shouted, "Are you determined to let the FBI investigate me, Hansen? Can't you just retire honestly?"

"Hahaha." Hansen's cheerful voice sounded, "So, tell me about it. I'm somewhat interested. I can brag about it in front of the kids later. Don't you know how popular this Hoodie Man is among those kids? I don't want to be the former chief of LAPD and have nothing to say about this matter."

"Then you may be disappointed, Chief." Jim said helplessly, "Unless someone wants to dig up the matter of that laboratory, or the Hoodie Man has committed another big crime, no one will investigate him."

"I see. Do you think he had anything to do with that?"

"No." Jim lied with his eyes open: "In my opinion, he is just a lunatic with good skills. He is probably a retired special forces soldier with PTSD who has watched too many superhero movies and fantasized about himself as a hero."

"I thought I did the right thing before, but that was because I didn't know he could hang someone from a streetlight by himself in front of two fully armed FBI teams!"

Jim clearly heard the other party breathe a sigh of relief: "Thanks, Jim, you go back to work, and remember to hire me as a consultant when you can't continue."

"I am much younger than you, Director. If you can survive without getting Azlheimer before I get old, I will definitely hire you back."

The two hung up the phone after greeting each other.

Just when Jim was wondering why Hansen suddenly cared about Xiunuo's affairs, Jonas called.

"Hey, busy man, it's not easy for you to answer the phone."

"If you have something to say, just say it. This is my fucking private phone number. Didn't I tell you that?"

"Just a small matter, does Hansen know who the boss is?"

"Of course I don't know." Jim responded instinctively, but halfway through, he suddenly realized something: "Damn it, why did he call me just now to ask about the investigation I had done before."

"Oh? He has already come to you? What did he say?"

"Tell me what happened on your side first."

"Okay." Jonas told the story of Dak again.

Jim's voice became ugly after hearing this: "That idiot! Didn't he ever think that the incident was so big back then, how could Hansen, as the chief of LAPD, not know about it! These drug dealers, even if they are cleansed of their crimes, can't change their arrogant and stupid hearts. They always think that the police are useless and they can fool the police around."

"He has no idea that if it weren't for that damn procedural justice, in the era of Western sheriffs, their heads would have been hanging in front of the police station long ago!"

"So what's the situation over there now?"

"Hansen asked me about something I investigated before, but." Hansen was Jim's old friend after all, and he really cared about him. So Jim still wanted to say something good about Hansen.

"However, he didn't seem to care about the boss's identity. From my conversation, he cared more about whether I was still keeping an eye on the boss."

"What do you mean?"

"He thought I was fooling around at first, and judging from what he asked me just now, he cares about whether the investigation into Sweater Man is still going on. That's what he cares about, not the boss's identity."

There was silence on Jonas's part.

After a while, Jonas said, "You and Hansen have a good relationship, right?"

Jim didn't hold back: "Yes, it's pretty good."

"So you're speaking for him?"

"He doesn't know about our relationship, so he came to ask me. But because he came to ask me about this, I don't think he would tell anyone, Joe. I know Hansen. Compared to making meritorious contributions, he hopes that he would not make any mistakes. So, now that he is holding a position in the Bazel family, he should not say anything for the sake of his own income."

"So what you're saying is that he's already guessed it."

"He is the former chief of the LAPD. Don't think that all those who can reach this position are useless. Of course, Thompson is an exception. But Hansen's background is different from Thompson's. He just joined a good fraternity in college. Moreover, I, who was investigating at the time, have no evidence, and he doesn't have any either. I was in charge of that matter, right? I am very clear about this."

"Thanks for telling me this, Jim." Jonas seemed to think differently from Jim.

He just said, "But this matter is too big. I understand that you want to protect your friends, but many times, emotions will cloud your judgment, Jim. Think about how you got to this position. We are the people in the same boat. If anyone else wants to get on the boat, it may capsize the boat."

"So Jim, think carefully about what you're going to do."

Jim sat in his chair and looked at the familiar office, feeling a little complicated for a moment.

My old friends and my future.

Jim never expected that this choice would come to him.

After thinking for a while, Jim finally spoke; "I know what to do. I will go find the boss. But I want you to tell that bastard Duck that the boss needs to make the decision on this matter! He'd better not act rashly before the boss makes a decision!"

"A wise choice. Don't worry, I'll tell him."

After hanging up the phone, Jim looked at the screen of his mobile phone and tried to call Xiunuo several times but failed.

He struggled for a long time, and finally dialed Xiunuo's number.

As the beep sounded, Jim felt his heart tighten.

"Oh, Jim." Xiuno's voice sounded.

"Sir," Jim started, but apart from the title, he didn't know how to speak.

"About Hansen?" Xiunuo's voice was relaxed: "Dake and Jonas have already told me."

Jim's face turned dark. Those two bastards!
I only heard Xiu Nuo on the phone say, "Don't worry, I didn't let them touch him. He is still useful to us. And I found that both you and the two of them made a mistake."

"Ah? What's going on?"

"You're all worried about my identity being exposed." Xiu Nuo laughed happily. "But even if everyone knows who I am now, what can America do to me? Believe me, unless they are willing to drop a nuclear bomb into their own city to kill me, they can't do anything to me."

"I told them about this, and I'll tell you this, Jim. You need to understand one thing, that is, the problems you are worried about may never be a problem for me."

"So, just do your thing, okay Jim?"

After hanging up the phone, Jim was not happy about Hansen's safety. He just felt a chill rushing from the soles of his feet to the top of his head, because he found that what the boss had just said didn't seem to be a joke!
