Chapter 314 Down the River

Chapter 314 Down the River
Two big birds, which were a whole head taller than Ron, glared fiercely at the uninvited guests who came up the mountain. There was nothing on the top of the mountain except a huge bird's nest. In their opinion, if these two-legged beasts with messy members were not coming for their home, then they must be coming for them.

A young giant eagle, which was slightly smaller and only slightly larger than Driver, hid under the broad wings of its parents. It poked its head out curiously and looked at these creatures which were completely different from the group of stone monsters before.

"We're not coming for your house!" Driver glanced at Ron, and quickly gestured to the Giant Eagle family and communicated with them using animal language, "We're here to hunt down a group of gargoyles! Have you ever seen those monsters?"

"Have you seen it?!" The female eagle spread her wings angrily. It now looked almost three times bigger than before. "Those monsters took over our home! They even wanted to hurt our family of three!"

"If the village at the foot of the mountain had not had a conflict with them just now, we would never have been able to take back our homeland!"

"We spent hundreds of days and nights to build this nest!" The eagle covered his face and snuggled in the arms of his larger wife. "Look at what they have done to it. Where are my little decorations? Where are the food we stored for our children? They were all stolen by those robbers!"

Driver translated the giant eagles' original words to everyone word for word. Although he had become a ranger inexplicably, the relationship between the goblin hunters and wild animals other than mice and wolves was basically that of conjugated hunter and prey. If he were to negotiate on his own, a fight would inevitably break out within a few words.

After following Ron and others for such a long time, Driver at least has this degree of self-awareness.

"Have you noticed the conflict in the village? Very good," Ron nodded. "We were the ones who defeated those bandits. Now we hope to completely eradicate this scourge, so we tracked them here - can you tell me where they went?"

"Did you defeat those stone monsters?" The young giant eagle called out curiously twice, but was soon pushed behind by its parents.

"You look very weak," the eagle questioned. "You don't seem to have sharp beaks and claws, nor strong wings!"

"Especially this goblin that can communicate with us, and it doesn't even look like it's enough for a meal for our children!"

"It doesn't even look like it's big enough - Hey! Watch your words!" Driver couldn't help himself halfway through the translation. "You are just bigger pigeons in my eyes! We can easily make a big table of you!"

"Although what he said is a bit exaggerated, I think I can prove it," Ron stretched out his hand, and the arcane light danced along with his fingers, transforming into realistic monster phantoms. These images were taken from monsters encountered in previous adventures and had no offensive power, but they did give the three big birds enough shock.

"Feathered bears (owlbears)! Big wolves (worgs)! And dragons (Exuri)!" The giant eagles exclaimed one after another. The female eagle took a step forward, staring at the illusions that she couldn't tell were real or fake. "Are you a magician? In that case, you might be able to defeat those stone monsters."

"Are they also products of magic, your creation? Like this metal lump on your shoulder?"

"Unfortunately, none of them are my creations," Ron shook his head. "When we defeated the gargoyles, they even kidnapped one of my companions. Now, can you tell me where they went?"

"We don't care where they go, as long as they don't come back!" The female eagle snorted, "But if you can kill them all, it might be a good thing."

"Well, although we don't know where those rocks are flying to, we know where they come from - you can stand a little closer, maybe stand on the edge of our house, that will help you see more clearly?"

"Don't fall!" the young bird warned, "If you fall and can't fly, you will die!" "Several of my brothers and sisters have been like this before!"

"Not really," the eagle said awkwardly, pushing his child away with his wings. "It's our first child. We told it this to encourage it to learn to fly as quickly as possible."

"Then we kicked it down and lied to it that it was careless," the female eagle whispered, "My child, it's really great, it succeeded in one try. In fact, we are not sure if we can catch it in time if it really falls down..."

"Let's save the family talk for later." Ron was standing at the highest point of the entire mountain, trying to suppress the dizziness and looking down. "Madam, can you show us the direction?"

Looking down from here, all the ground landmarks seemed so small. If the giant eagle could only give them a rough direction, it would probably take Ron and his team ten days or half a month to find the right path.

But he may have underestimated the capabilities of wild animals.

"Go down from here. Do you see those gray forests? There are many mud monsters living in them. Find the largest one and go in the direction where the big fireball rises in the sky every day. Keep going until you meet a river."

The female eagle's sharp eyes penetrated the woods and swamps several kilometers away: "You can choose to cross the river or go along the river bank and follow the direction of the water flow. There, you two-legged beasts have built a circle of walls. There are many boxes inside, storing food reserves. That's where we first discovered those stone monsters."

"Sometimes, when I don't want to, I mean, I can't catch prey, I will find some food from it," the eagle added. "It's strange that you creatures, like squirrels, hoard so much meat and let it rot until it turns to bones?"

"Is your memory so bad that even if we build a wall and even put a stone or a piece of wood on each food box, it won't prevent you from forgetting where they are and digging them out in time?"

Ron and the others were completely confused by what the giant eagle said. Not to mention Ron, even the most knowledgeable Yelena and Quest couldn't remember what kind of cultural tradition would store food like the giant eagles said.

"Are they talking about a cellar?" Yelena frowned. "But I've never seen a cellar with a wall built around it, or food packed in boxes..."

"And use stone or wood to mark it?" Ivy scratched her hair. "Why not just write a note? Or just paint it—"

Ron knew this would happen when he saw the look Ivy gave him after she suddenly fell silent.

"Thank you for your directions," Ron thanked the Giant Eagle family politely with the help of Driver's translation, "But let me remind you two that this is not a place to store food."

"In the traditions of our race, this kind of place is generally called a cemetery..."
