Chapter 27: Not Your Ordinary Baby

The physician's real name was Yuan Musheng. Shang Wan thought the group didn't know each other, so she introduced them to one another.

“Sister, when the young master was recuperating in the village, he had several high fevers that wouldn’t go down, and it was Brother Yuan who came up with the solutions.” Shi Tou scratched his head and smiled at Yuan Musheng, “Brother Yuan, it’s been a long time.”

"It must have been five years, right? You've grown so tall." Yuan Musheng patted Shi Tou's shoulder and looked at Lu Chengjing. "How come you're so skinny, like a monkey? There's no color in your face. Doesn't the Lu family feed you?"

Nine years ago, when Lu Chengjing was ten years old, his wife drew a very bad fortune slip at a temple. The slip indicated that Lu Chengjing had offended the God of Literature and would hinder his elder brother Lu Chengyuan's imperial examination.

Lu Chengjing was still running a high fever when his wife, who had returned to the mansion, hurriedly packed him up and sent him to Yushu Village, claiming that Yushu Village had beautiful scenery and was suitable for recuperation.

The only people accompanying him were Shi Tou and Qin Mama, Lu Chengjing's wet nurse.

Suddenly sent to an unfamiliar place, Shi Tou and Granny Qin had no time to adjust before facing the problem that there was no medicine in their luggage and that Lu Chengjing had a persistent high fever and was about to become mentally impaired.

At that time, Yuan Musheng was just an apprentice at a small pharmacy in the county town. He lived and ate at the pharmacy and went home to see his parents every three days.

When Shi Tou came to his door, he was fast asleep on the kang (a heated brick bed), and there was still sleep in the corner of his eye when he opened the door.

He's just a pharmacy apprentice, and he's only been learning for a month. How could he have the guts to treat patients?

The child who came to his door was crying as if the sky had fallen. He couldn't bear it, so he gritted his teeth, took the few medicines he had at home that were appropriate for the symptoms, and managed to bring down Lu Chengjing's fever by using well water to cool him down and forcing him to drink several large bowls of bitter medicine. He almost saved Lu Chengjing's life.

Seeing that something was wrong with the family, Yuan Musheng took advantage of Qin Mama's cooking time to get information out of Shitou. Shitou was not even ten years old at the time, and he unknowingly let Yuan Musheng get information out of him.

After learning about Lu Chengjing's plight, Yuan Musheng felt great sympathy for the boy. Every time he returned from the county town, he would come to visit him, and he would also bring back anything the three of them needed.

After a while, they became familiar with each other.

A year later, Qin Mama's son died. She rushed back to attend the funeral and never returned. Only her two half-grown sons were left to depend on each other for survival.

Stone's cooking was always undercooked, and Lu Chengjing ate half-cooked rice and half-cooked vegetables for half a month, eventually falling ill. If Yuan Musheng hadn't returned just in time, Lu Chengjing probably would have died from Stone's disastrous cooking.

A year later, the Lu family suddenly sent someone to pick up Lu Chengjing and take him back. Yuan Musheng thought that Lu's parents had probably had a change of heart and wanted to take Lu Chengjing back to enjoy a better life, so he paid for the two boys to have a nice meal and happily sent them off.

Five years later, he never expected that the two of them would return to Yushu Village, and that they would be living poorly in the Lu family.

When Yuan Musheng asked why the two had returned, and since Shi Tou was close to him and Lu Chengjing hadn't stopped him, he told him everything in detail.

Yuan Musheng was furious when he heard this.

Are there any parents like this? When their child is in trouble, instead of thinking about saving him, they rush to remove him from the family tree to sever ties. Anyone who didn't know better would think Lu Chengjing was adopted.

He couldn't help but curse, "The Lu family is really despicable. I knew you shouldn't have gone back. You're smart enough to stay in the village and learn medicine with me. You wouldn't have starved to death."

Lu Chengjing pursed his lips, his eyes slightly darkening.

Shang Wan glanced at him and changed the subject, "Dr. Yuan, please take a look at Yuanyuan's injury first."

Little Yuanyuan was already asleep in her father's arms. Yuan Musheng pulled her arm over, cleaned the wound, and sprinkled on some wound medicine. The little girl woke up with a "whoop" from her dream, and flailed her little arm around, almost knocking over the medicine box.

Lu Chengjing quickly grabbed her wrist, but he didn't expect Yuanyuan to be so strong. Not only did he lose his grip, but he also got punched by his own daughter.

With two tubes of blood from his nose, Lu Chengjing questioned the meaning of life. Although he was a bit sickly, there was no reason why he couldn't even hold a one-year-old baby.

Shang Wan chuckled to herself. Yuan Yuan was young, but the spiritual spring water seemed to have changed her constitution, causing her to unexpectedly awaken her beast-taming ability at a critical moment. Her physical fitness improved rapidly, and she was no longer an ordinary baby.

"Stone, help me wipe the blood from her nose." Shang Wan bent down and took Yuan Yuan from Lu Chengjing's arms, easily restraining her wildly flailing arms, so that Yuan Musheng could continue bandaging.

If it's not bandaged soon, the wound will heal completely.

"Waaah...no...medicine!" Yuanyuan wailed in her little voice, but her mother was not her weak father, and her little strength was no match for her mother. She was forced to wrap two layers of gauze around her arm.

Yuan Musheng, completely oblivious to anything amiss, chuckled and said, "This kid is quite strong."

Shang Wan thought to herself, "This is nothing. With the improvement of my superpowers, it's not impossible for a three-year-old to uproot a willow tree."

"It's all bandaged up, sweetie, it doesn't hurt anymore." Shang Wan lowered her head and kissed the little one.

With tears welling up in her eyes and her red little nose twitching, Yuan Yuan leaned against Shang Wan and fell asleep again.

Xiao Huan came over and carried the person to the bedroom to rest.

Yuan Musheng began to treat Lu Chengjing.

After examining Lu Chengjing's injuries, he frowned and sighed, "The person who tortured you intended to destroy you."

Shi Tou asked anxiously, "Brother Yuan, can't the young master's injury be healed?"

"His tendons were completely severed, and it took several days to heal him. Even if Hua Tuo were alive, he couldn't cure him." Yuan Musheng's face was grim, and he hated the viciousness of the person who did it. "The whip marks on his back and chest are nothing to worry about, but the whip marks on his legs are all to the bone. They have damaged his tendons and bones. Even if the skin and flesh are healed, he will have difficulty walking in the future."

What he didn't say was that Lu Chengjing was already weak and deficient in qi and blood, so it was a miracle that he could survive such a serious injury.

Shi Tou's tears streamed down his face. His young master was going to become the top scholar in the imperial examination. Wasn't this like tearing out his young master's heart?
Shang Wan glanced at the silent Lu Chengjing and invited Yuan Musheng to talk outside the room.

“Since you are Chengjing’s wife, I will take the liberty of calling you sister-in-law.” Yuan Musheng looked at Shang Wan with worry in his eyes. “Chengjing is seriously injured and may not be able to help the family in the future. Yuanyuan is still young. What are your plans now, sister-in-law?”

"As long as the person is alive, it's not a big deal." Shang Wan smiled. "There's always a way."

She possesses a magical spring that can set any broken bone or tendon.

Previously, when Lu Chengjing was in prison, he needed to recover from his injuries, so Shang Wan only spared his life. Now that he's home, it's natural to put the treatment of his injuries on the agenda.

Yuan Musheng was moved by what he heard.

As the saying goes, "Husbands and wives are like birds in the same forest; when disaster strikes, they fly away separately." Given her looks and temperament, her younger sister-in-law wouldn't have trouble finding a husband even if they divorced, yet she's willing to stay by Chengjing's side. This kind of affection is truly rare.

He couldn't help but sigh, "It's Chengjing's good fortune to be able to marry my brother's wife."

Shang Wan secretly raised her eyebrows. She didn't know if Lu Chengjing was lucky or not, but he was definitely good-looking.
