Chapter 123 Waiting for the rabbit
Lin Jianshan was caught off guard and she caught him red-handed, leaving several bloody marks on his face.

He shook his head to avoid it, angrily shouting, "You crazy woman! I'm your man!"

Zhou persisted in scratching him, and did not stop the two constables who were holding Lin Jianshan, but watched the show quietly, and even tightened their grip on Lin Jianshan.

Liu couldn't stand by and watch her son get beaten, so she went up to drag Zhou away and slapped her across the face.

"Snapped!"

This slap was delivered with no force, almost knocking Zhou down.

"Mother!" Zhou covered her bright red face, looking at Liu with tears in her eyes, her expression both aggrieved and helpless.

"He's your man! He's your everything! How dare you lay a hand on him?" Liu said sternly. "Go home now, don't embarrass yourself here!"

Zhou was startled by her glare, and then looked at Village Chief Lin, hoping that her father-in-law could uphold justice for her.

Village Chief Lin said expressionlessly, "Listen to your mother."

Zhou's tears immediately fell.

Liu Yuzhi stepped forward and gently comforted her, "Sister-in-law, let me help you back first."

"Get out of my way!" Zhou shoved her away. "You're no better than me!"

Liu Yuzhi stumbled and fell to the ground after being pushed by her.

"Yuzhi." Liu helped her up with heartache, glaring angrily at Zhou. "Yuzhi was just trying to help you, and this is how you treat her!"

"She's after my man, what do you think my attitude should be?" Zhou wiped away her tears, turned around with a sneer, grabbed her son, and strode home.

Liu's face turned ugly. "You stop right there!"

She couldn't let her daughter suffer a loss for nothing.

Zhou ignored him and kept walking.

The villagers made way for her, thinking it was rare to see Lin Dajia stand up for herself in front of her mother-in-law, Liu Shi.

This was the first time Liu had been disobeyed by her daughter-in-law Zhou. She was so angry that her chest heaved violently, and her gaze at Zhou's back was like a poisoned knife, as if she wanted to cut a piece of flesh out of her.

"Aunt, I'm fine. Don't upset yourself because of me. Yuzhi will be worried." Liu Yuzhi shook Liu's arm coquettishly and whispered to comfort her, "I understand that my eldest cousin is in a bad mood. Please don't quarrel with her because of me."

"I'll deal with her when we get back!" Liu said, her face dark. Her eldest son had only slept with other women a few times, but he hadn't brought any home. Now that woman was dead, what more did Zhou want?
She actually started throwing a tantrum at the man! She's so spoiled!

If it weren't for the fact that Zhou had given birth to a precious grandson for the family, she would have had her eldest son divorce her long ago.

A hen that can't lay eggs is only good for eating plain rice!
She cursed under her breath, determined to teach this disobedient daughter-in-law a lesson once this was over!

Dan Dajun ordered his men to take Lin Jianshan back. Lin Jianshan shouted, "I'm innocent! I really didn't kill her! If I wanted to kill her, I wouldn't have left the silver hairpin for her and created a hidden danger for myself."

Dan Dajun watched coldly, his intuition telling him that Lin Jianshan was probably not lying.

But if Lin Jianshan isn't the murderer, then who is?

“Officer, there’s one more person you haven’t asked yet.” Shang Wan gestured towards Chen Guifang, “She doesn’t have an alibi either.”

Chen Guifang's body stiffened, her hands clenched tightly, and a look of panic flashed uncontrollably across her face.

Before Shan Dajun could ask, she confessed, "I didn't kill him!"

Shan Dajun narrowed his eyes, "You saw the murderer?"

“No.” Chen Guifang shook her head vigorously. “When I saw Gui Shi, she was still alive.”

It turned out that Chen Guifang had discovered Lin Jianshan's suspicious behavior, so she secretly followed him all the way to the reed marshes.

She was shocked to see Gui, and the sight of the two of them rolling around in each other's arms made her so disgusted she almost vomited her dinner from the night before. She only came out after Lin Jianshan left, and used their adultery as leverage to demand that Gui give her the silver hairpin.

Gui refused, and was not afraid of Chen Guifang's threats.

Since she had already obtained the items, by the time Chen Guifang revealed their affair, she would have already run away, leaving only Lin Jianshan to suffer the consequences.

Chen Guifang had no choice but to leave, fearing she would be scolded if she stayed out too long.

“I just want that silver hairpin,” Chen Guifang said. “When I left, Gui Shi was still alive.”

After examining Chen Guifang, the coroner said to Shan Dajun, "She shouldn't be the murderer."

First of all, Chen Guifang's height doesn't match. Judging from the angle at which the wooden stick was inserted, the murderer should have been at least a head taller than the victim.

Secondly, the murderer was very strong; otherwise, it would have been impossible to pierce a person completely with just a sharpened wooden stick. Chen Guifang was a woman, and it would have been very difficult for her to do this.

In conclusion, the possibility that Chen Guifang is the murderer is extremely low.

After a series of interrogations, the case seemed to have returned to square one.

Dan Dajun scratched his head. Since he was already here, he couldn't let things come to nothing. He decided to take the two men back for a thorough interrogation.

The Lin family naturally refused, but their meager past relationship was completely useless in the face of a murder case, and they could only watch helplessly as the officials took the two away.

As night falls, the moon leaps above the branches, casting streaks of silver light across the river.

A dark figure crept over, disappeared into the reeds, and, with a hunched back, carefully searched for something by the moonlight.

"Strange, it should have fallen around here, why isn't it here?"

The man muttered to himself, secretly complaining that the moonlight wasn't bright enough and he couldn't see anything clearly.

"Are you looking for this?" A pleasant female voice suddenly rang out, startling the man so much that he turned and ran.

Unfortunately, it was too late. The officials, led by Shan Dajun, surrounded him with torches, and the flickering flames illuminated the man's face.

Zhang Er exclaimed in surprise, "Zhao Tian! It's you!"

Zhao Tian hurriedly raised his sleeve to cover his face.

"They're actually stupid enough to go back to the crime scene for a purse." Shang Wan emerged from the shadows, a dirty, blood-stained old purse hooked on her slender fingers.

She found this under the blood-stained reeds when she was picking up the red rope. It was clearly a man's money bag, probably left behind by the murderer.

The purse contained two taels of loose silver and about thirty copper coins, which was not a small sum for the villagers. If it were lost, they would likely come back to look for it.

She and Lu Chengjing discussed the matter with Shan Dajun and decided to wait and see.

The game had just been set up when the rabbit came bounding over and bumping into the pillar.

"I don't understand what you're saying." Zhao Tian turned his back. "I just couldn't sleep, so I came to take a walk by the river. Is that not allowed?"

"Your tastes are quite peculiar," Shang Wan clicked her tongue. "Of all the places to visit, you have to pick areas where people have died. Aren't you worried that Gui's vengeful spirit will come after you?"

A night breeze blew by, and a chill suddenly ran down Zhao Tian's back. He instinctively looked around.

Suddenly, a deathly pale face, bleeding from all seven orifices, appeared behind the group, startling him so much that his pupils constricted and he screamed in a hoarse voice, "A ghost!!!"

"L……"

The stench of urine was so strong that it scared me so much that I peed my pants.

"Ghost!!"
