Chapter 43 A Small Change of Plan

They walked past the eunuchs and entered the inner courtyard of the mansion, which was lined with stone pillars and covered with pale ivy. The shadows of the leaves were dyed a bone-white silver by the moonlight.

"You are an exiled prince," the governor of Myr asked. "Why would you not hide and plot to restore your kingdom in a quiet place, but come to the governor of a free city to pay your respects?"

Lord Magister Myr sat on an oak chair in the inner courtyard pavilion, listening to Viserys's petition. There were nobles in rich attire sitting beside him. They did not introduce themselves to Viserys, but just sat there looking listless and sleepy. They listened, but they did not seem to be taking it in.

Viserys was an unexpected visitor.

"A king," Viserys answered. "Ser Willem Darry crowned me. I did not send the letter publicly, Lord Governor. The letter was dropped at your private residence. I had expected to meet you in a more private setting."

"." Mill's governor squinted his eyes at him. "As a king, I once heard from others that you have a different view of the word 'privacy' than ordinary people. I didn't believe it at that time, but now I can say that I have experienced it firsthand."

There was a snickering sound around Governor Mill.

"." The other party's venomous tongue almost made Viserys want to retort, but he held back.

"What do you want?" The Lord Magister of Myr picked up the grapes on the plate and stuffed them into his mouth. "You want me to offer you asylum? You want me to introduce you to the captain of the Golden Company? Or do you want me to conquer Westeros with you?"

"In fact, I want to discuss a business with you, Lord Governor." Now that he was here, Viserys couldn't just say nothing.

"Business. My Chamber of Commerce has a department for liaison with external cooperation. Did someone abolish the department when I wasn't paying attention?" asked Mill's Governor.

Someone chimed in: "As far as I know, this department has not been closed down. It is on the first floor of your Chamber of Commerce building, and there is a window facing the outside."

"That's good," said Myr's governor. "Shall I send someone to guide you, my king?"

"I wish to speak with you alone, Lord Magister." Viserys almost applauded Magister Myr's reaction, but he remembered clearly what he needed to do.

"Then you are not here to discuss business?" Mill's governor said. "To be honest, you confuse me."

Viserys got to the point. "I would like to borrow some money from you, Lord Magister."

The governor of Mir asked the people around him, "Who can tell me whether the banking industry in Mir has stopped lending to foreign countries?"

"I assure you, absolutely not." Someone answered, "The Iron Throne recently borrowed money from the bank."

"Good. Do you need me to arrange for someone to instruct you on how to borrow money from the bank in Myr, my king?" The governor of Myr looked at Viserys. "I heard that you only brought a crown last time, but this time you brought three ships and guards. The bank will be happy to lend you money."

"It is you I seek, Lord Magister of Myr," Viserys said. "Those ships are the property of a kind man who wished to support me."

"You want me to lend you money in my personal capacity? To provide you with financial support?" Governor Mill said, "You should have said so earlier. Then I will answer you in my personal capacity, no."

"Would you listen to me?" Viserys wanted to speak.

Governor Mill interrupted him. "I'm sorry, I should have said it more gently, but I'm afraid you don't understand, King. I said 'no'."

"Oh." Viserys felt that he should blush at this moment, but he could only exaggerated his embarrassment. "I am sorry to bother you, Lord Governor. Please allow me to take my leave."

"Someone, show my guest away for me." The Lord Magister of Myr seemed pleased to hear Viserys say so. "I sincerely hope that you will feel at home in Myr, my guest."

At this moment, Viserys recalled Illyrio's chubby face and began to think what a kind and generous man the fat governor was. It seemed that he was the only one willing to listen to the words Viserys had prepared.

After leaving the door of Lord Governor Myr, Viserys looked at Daenerys who was looking depressed.

"What's wrong? You seem unhappy?"

"Yes."

"Dany, I'm afraid I must explain something to you. Myr's governor spoke with great venom, and he expressed indignation that we had come to him, but he also meant well."

Dany could not hide her surprise. "Ah, yes, you heard it right. Think about it, what he said was to warn us not to make a big fuss about our joining the party and causing trouble in Myr, but also to tell us that in Myr we don't have to worry about being murdered by the nobles of the Free Trade Cities. If we do business openly, they will not react to it and may even welcome us. He is the Governor of Myr, and his attitude is the attitude of Myr. This city will keep a distance from us and does not want us to die here. Do you understand, Dany?"

"." Dany's expression asked, is that so?
"Okay, you can talk normally now. We're already at the party, so stop trying to imitate Butch."

"Then what about us?" Dany wanted to say.

"Have you forgotten our purpose?" Viserys interrupted her. "Do not let the leaves blind you to the fruit you seek, Dany."

Across the street, Jorah and Butch were walking toward them quickly and soon reached them.

Qiao La looked around cautiously and said, "Sir, are you and the young lady okay?"

Viserys responded glumly, "Ah, what could possibly happen at a feast at Myr's governor's house?"

"What happened?" Jorah asked, seeing that Viserys seemed very angry and unhappy.

Viserys gave the order in a depressed tone: "Let's go back and talk about it." Then he took the lead and walked towards the inn.

Daenerys followed closely behind Viserys, and imitated him, changing the relaxed expression on her face into her earlier sullen look.

Back at the inn, Viserys called Jorah and Butch into the room and asked Ani to wait at the door.

Viserys expressed his indignation: "I cannot believe it. I paid him such a compliment, and he did not even give me a chance to fully express my opinion."

Jorah glanced secretly at his king, then at Daenerys, who was looking unhappy beside the king, and had some guesses about what happened to them at the banquet.

Jorah sighed. "My lord. I'm so sorry."

"You're sorry?" Viserys seemed to be turning his anger on Jorah. "You don't even know what he said to me. What else can you say besides that you're sorry? Can't you give me some constructive suggestions?"

"." Qiao La lowered his eyes respectfully.

"But if you think about it carefully, what he said makes sense. I personally went to his courtyard to deliver the visiting card, and I also wrote such a conspicuous title. The wealthy merchants in Myr would be unwilling to lend me money because of their fear of the usurper and the fear that the matter would be exposed." Viserys asked Jorah angrily, "Jorah, what do you think should be written on the visiting card?"

"I am afraid I am not sufficiently learned to give you advice, my Lord."

"You know it's just a suggestion. Whether to adopt it or not is another matter. After all, you were once the lord of Bear Island."

Jorah said, "How about just 'Viserys Targaryen'?"

"So they know I'm the king?"

The Beggar King's reputation is well known among the rich and powerful. Jorah said, "That should be enough. Who else in the world is named Targaryen?"

"You have a point." The Beggar King accepted Jorah's suggestion. "Also, Myr seems to be collaborating with the Iron Throne in some way, and I need to know what it is. Jorah, can you find out?"

"Me?" Jorah had a puzzled look on his face.

"Why?" Viserys said unhappily, "If you don't want to go, should Butch go? Or should I go alone?"

Jorah could only agree, "Yes, my lord."

After Jorah and Butch left, Ani sent a message to Viserys, who seemed to have calmed down: "My lord, Captain Grole was here just now. He wanted to ask if you have decided how long you will stay in Myr?"

"It will take at least two weeks," Viserys thought for a moment before answering. "Tell him to prepare for three weeks or more."
