Chapter 31 Find Him Something to Do
By the time dinner came, Illyrio's guests had left.
Over this particularly sumptuous dinner, the Fat Lord apologized to Viserys: "Your Majesty, please allow me to apologize for my rudeness today. I assure you that such a thing will never happen again."
"You are kind, Illyrio," Viserys said, giving him a way out. "It was a small matter. This is your court, and I understand that such things are commonplace. But if you insist on an apology, I will accept it. I hope it will ease your mind." He said, praising him. "There are not many kinglovers as loyal as you, Illyrio."
Illyrio said, "Thank you for your understanding, my Lord."
"By the way, aren't you going to give me a maid?" Viserys started a new topic. "I think the maid Ani is okay. Let's take her."
"Ani?" Illyrio thought for a moment, as if he had just matched the name with the person. "If His Majesty wants her to serve him, then this is her. It is her luck."
Just as Ani herself thought, her matter was just a trivial matter, and even her master was happy about it.
Illyrio quickly moved on to the next topic. "Your Majesty, among the guards accompanying the Tyroshi envoy today, there is a knight who was born in the Seven Kingdoms. I heard that he committed some crimes and came to Essos as a mercenary. I talked to him briefly about the affairs of the Seven Kingdoms and found that he knows a lot about the Seven Kingdoms and is more insightful than ordinary sailors and merchants. I wonder if such a person should be recruited to work for Your Majesty?"
"Nobles from the Seven Kingdoms who lost power in Westeros like to come here," Viserys did not give the fat governor a normal response, but said, "Blackfyre was like this in the past, and so am I. I think that knight is like this too." Viserys did not want to deal with Illyrio's temptations blindly, and occasionally wanted to do something himself and let the other party deal with it. "In fact, I heard some of your conversation in the garden today. You know, the room is in the garden. Look, Illyrio, let's not talk about that knight first. I heard you talking about the route from Tyrosh to Dorne?"
Illyrio smiled and replied, "Yes, sire. To be honest, the Tyroshis have relied on their geographical location to control Dorne's shipping routes. Now that they have had disputes with Lys and Myr, we can take advantage of this opportunity to take action."
"Yes, yes." Viserys had other thoughts in mind, but he didn't say it directly. He only said, "This is a good thing, Illyrio. It is good for our cause. It is right for you to do business in Westeros. Not only Dorne, but also Stormlands, Kingshill, Vale, the North, and even Lannisport are all good trade routes. It is a good thing to find more opportunities to do business there."
"I thought so, sire," Illyrio replied. "In time, I shall be able to offer you the freshest Dornish lemons of Pentos."
"I look forward to that day," Viserys said. He did not mention Dorne any more and turned the topic back to the knight Jorah Mormont. "Speaking of that knight, Illyrio, I think you should know what we are going to do. That knight is worth recruiting, but it is too early now. So, when he finishes his current commission, you can hire him and find him something to do. In the process, you have to see what kind of character he has. If he is really talented, I will recruit him myself in the future. If not, I will find a reason to fire him."
"Your Majesty has thought it through." Although it did not meet expectations, it was better than the worst case scenario. Illyrio complimented Viserys and asked, "In your opinion, what should I arrange for him to do to test his character?"
"." Viserys seemed to be stumped by the question. He thought for a long time before answering, "It's up to you."
Illyrio said worriedly, "Your Majesty, he is a Westerosi noble. I know very little about the customs and ways of the Seven Kingdoms. I am afraid I may ruin your plans."
This was also a test. After thinking about it, Illyrio suspected that Viserys was the kind of noble who seemed to know how to do things right, had a set of theoretical knowledge to satisfy his capital for boasting, and knew the general direction of doing things, but when it came to specific things, he didn't know what to do.
For example, now it is to arrange personnel and test character. Viserys knows that he needs to arrange things to test character, but he seems to have no idea how to do it, so he presumes to leave the specific things to Illyrio - he seems to trust Illyrio in these matters that are not related to the core secrets. In short, Illyrio thinks that this beggar king has a bit of the temperament of a superior, is thick-skinned enough, and can show off his posture, but lacks practical experience. Come to think of it, the beggar king has no chance to actually deal with these things.
"Go ahead," Viserys replied to the Fat Lord. "You will be my Lord Chancellor of the Exchequer. It is only a matter of time before you have to deal with the nobles of the Seven Kingdoms."
"If you say so, I will do it," Illyrio promised. He added, "Should I let him know who is really hiring him, if the time comes?"
"No. If he is worth recruiting then," Viserys said, "I will recruit him myself."
"Yes, Your Majesty."

It was pretty much what Ani had expected. In her report, the master was most interested in the reaction of the Beggar King when they eavesdropped on the conversation in the garden, but she could provide very little information, so the master lost interest and asked her to talk about something else.
She then went on to tell her what the Beggar King and his sister had said today. They had been practicing the archer's stance the entire afternoon, one teaching and the other learning in front of her. The master was not very concerned about this and just treated it as a piece of information to show her knowledge.
Rather than things that were not much different from what they expected, his master was more concerned about how the Beggar King had chosen her, and he thought for a long time after she told him about the situation.
"When you work for him, don't rush to show off. Just treat yourself as a normal maid." Her master warned her, "He is not a person who will easily trust others. You just need to work diligently and obey his orders."
"Yes." she answered.
"He probably won't do anything to you in the short term, but don't try to seduce him. He seems to have some strange prejudices against women. Don't treat him the same way you treat young nobles who have never seen a woman." Her master advised her, "Also, if he tortures you in private."
"I know what to do, Master," she responded.
"Well, I have prepared a new suit for you. Put it on and go to the king." Her master gave her a bag of gifts and finally said to her, "Don't forget who you are."
"Yes, Master."
