Chapter 279: Battle of King's Landing
Chapter 279: Battle of King's Landing
These days, Junlin is getting colder day by day.
It is unclear whether the cold wave was brought about by the appearance of the White Walkers, or whether the Long Night brought the entire Westeros into an even colder winter.
Ever since Jaime led the Lannister army back to King's Landing, King's Landing has lost contact with the noble castles in the north and east of the crown. Even from the nearest city of Rosby, there has been no news since a raven message for help was sent a few days ago.
Although Rosby is located on the eastern route to King's Landing and is a shortcut for caravans and vassal states to supply King's Landing, the village is not as big as a "city" in the general sense. Many people who have been to Rosby are impressed by the small houses made of wooden strips and mud everywhere in the town.
Everyone who knew about Rossby City’s last letter for help knew that Rossby City was probably in great danger.
As the White Walker's front line advanced, King's Landing became the front line, and thus faced the same problem as the defenders of the Great Wall: sending out scouts was tantamount to sending them to their deaths, and if the patrol range outside the city was too close, no intelligence could be obtained, and if the patrol range was too far, no scouts would return.
King's Landing became blind as it knew nothing about the situation north of the King's Road, including Rosby, Staghorn, Maidenpool, Duskendale, and Crow's Rest. After the ravens lost contact, it knew nothing about the situation.
Only in the south, at the southern gate under strict military control, there are occasional caravans from the south - most of them are "official Targaryen smugglers" who conduct secret transactions in the Blackwater River port, and continue to bring supplies to King's Landing.
The Targaryen side responded to the current situation of King's Landing: "We hope that King's Landing can stabilize and play the role of a central city in Westeros. As a bridgehead, it will protect one end of the King's Road during the Long Night, curb the possibility of the White Walker army breaking through from King's Landing, and prevent them from further harming the country. Most of the military forces have been transferred by King Viserys to the Stormlands and northeastern Southland on the front of the Wall. At this point, the Targaryen side is willing to be frank and make it clear that the Targaryen army has only more than 2,000 troops deployed in the front of the Stormlands and northeastern Southland, just to pacify the local area and receive refugees. The main force is all in the middle of Stonetown and other key hubs. Now that White Walkers are everywhere in the hinterland, only the defenders of King's Landing on the eastern front can stop the White Walkers. At this time, everyone should put aside all disputes and unite as one."
Anyway, there are a lot of repetitive words, to sum it up: there is no military aid, but the trade routes for transporting supplies can continue to be maintained. Now that all parties are in trouble, Junlin can only rely on himself.
In fact, this response is not false.
Some people on the King's Landing side who were considered "responders on the anti-White Walker front" received intelligence sharing from the Targaryen side.
Today, the Great Wall, the North, and the Riverlands have all become front lines. Even the valley that is said to be unbreakable is being ravaged by the White Walkers.
Anyone with military knowledge could quickly tell from this intelligence that the number of White Walkers was unprecedented in any war in Westeros' history. Judging from the number of White Walkers attacking the Wall and the performance of the divisions that attacked from all sides, the Targaryens estimated that the number of White Walkers was at least 400,000 when the war started.
They are truly a nation of soldiers. As long as there is life, it will become one of them after death.
The Wall and the North had already killed fourteen or fifteen thousand zombies in battle—including Viserys's battle at White Harbor.
But after the White Walkers penetrated deep into the territory and scattered flowers, the situation started to snowball.
The worst thing is that the snowball is still getting bigger and bigger, and the tide of zombies is getting larger and larger.
Yes, even though the Great Wall, the North and local defenders have already killed a large number of zombies attacking the city, the number of servants in the White Walker army is actually increasing.
This is the White Walkers' strategic and tactical approach during this period. They have only one main military goal: conversion efficiency.
In fact, even King's Landing received a letter for help from the Vale. The Vale lords were caught off guard by the White Walkers. It was not until the Bloody Gate was breached and the Arryns retreated to the Giant's Lance and sent out ravens that the several major lords in the Vale Basin learned that the White Walker army had already poured into the fertile basin fields of the Vale.
The Vale lords, who had maintained the tradition of wintering in the Vale, were still scattered in the farmer's towns and village clusters in the Vale basin as they did in the past. They did not follow Targaryen's suggestion to concentrate civilians in castles for fortified defense, but they felt the cold blow of the White Walkers in just half a month.
Who would have thought that the valley, which people thought was "indestructible", would erode faster and be hit harder than the "rotten land" Hejian, which people thought was "rotten land".
What is disturbing is that after the situation in the Vale deteriorated, there was no news of the fall of a castle of a great lord or a second-tier lord. This means that the invasion of the White Walkers was a strategic invasion.
The more secure the castle of the great lord is with its tight defense and thick walls, the more dangerous the human gathering places such as villages and towns in the plains, knight territories, and small noble castles in the valley are.
Just like King's Landing now.
The White Walker army has yet to show up in large numbers around King's Landing, so what will their troops be doing in the crownlands?
Speaking of which, before the Long Night, Duskendale, Maidenpool, and Crow's Roost had jointly petitioned to join the Targaryens and oppose King's Landing. Then, in the name of the royal family, Targaryen gave the lords of the three places an order to gather the people to Crow's Roost, Fell Harbor, and Crabclaw Peninsula to avoid the winter.
Then the princes of the three places all chose to remain silent.
I wonder if they regret it now. Before the arrival of the White Walker army, they had more than half a year to gather for winter. Viserys even considered the risks of long-distance migration and arranged for them to live in a nearby area. However, they did not realize the danger of the long night and thought that it was a deliberate embarrassment from the Targaryen side.
Good words cannot persuade the damned ghosts. If they are willing to retreat to one place and regroup, Viserys could use sea transportation from Dragonstone and Tidehead to provide them with supplies, jobs, or even transfer some of the mountain troops from the Crabclaw Peninsula to assist in military defense.
But as the lords of the three places remained silent, the plan came to nothing, and Viserys had no choice but to maintain the original plan and abandon the lords of the eastern part of the crown.
Of course, if the White Walker army is willing to enter the Crab Claw Peninsula, Viserys would also be happy to do so. According to the strategy of exchanging space for time, if the White Walkers enter the Crab Claw Peninsula in large numbers, the time they will spend there will be measured in months.
The mountain and forest environment there is complex and can last for more than half a year.
The northern part of the Vale also has a complex mountainous environment. If the White Walkers can, in addition to wreaking havoc in the Vale basin, turn their attention to the mountainous area to the north of the Vale, Viserys would be very happy to see that.
But unfortunately, judging from the crows that have been calling for help from various places after being attacked, the White Walkers are not complacent. They are relying on their military advantage to divide their forces and march into complex mountainous environments in large numbers.
Obviously, the White Walker commanders would also evaluate the efficiency issue. Although crossing the Mountains of the Moon is time-consuming and labor-intensive, the valley basin with many living creatures is worth the investment. As for the more remote and dangerous mountainous areas in the northern part of the valley, it is obviously not worth such an investment.
It was precisely because of this strategic goal that was very different from that of the human conquerors that the White Walker army did not choose to fight to the death against the politically significant Castle of the Arryn family after pouring into the valley. For pure efficiency considerations, any intelligent creature with a brain could judge that the thousands of humans hiding in the steep fortress deep in the mountains were not worth paying several times or even ten times the loss to slaughter and transform.
The three gates of the Eyrie of Family Arryn are not the Wall of Despair. Conquering them cannot provide magical supplies to the White Walker army, and it is meaningless to waste energy on these people.
It is also out of considerations of efficiency.
As the days passed, when the White Walker commanders believed that their military strength had reached a certain level, they finally began to turn their attention to large cities in order to achieve greater massacre-to-mass conversion efficiency.
Relying on the snowballing advantage in military strength, a battle that will sweep across half of Westeros and break out simultaneously at the Great Wall, the North, the western part of the Riverlands, the Vale Basin, and King's Landing has gradually begun.
Any major war usually has a beginning that seems unremarkable at the time but is considered by historians to be the beginning of the war.
On this day, the Great Wall, which had been silent for some time, once again faced a large-scale attack.
The White Walker troops made a big circle from the frozen Seal Bay and Ice Bay to attack the back of the Great Wall, and launched an attack from both inside and outside the Great Wall. Slightly different from the previous times, the White Walker army focused on attacking several relatively weak areas this time.
The White Walkers who went around the southern slope went deeper into the New Gift, no longer fighting Eastwatch and Shadow Tower, but instead launched a pincer attack on Greywatch, Stonegate, Greenwatch, and Beacon Tower, which were relatively inland. Beacon Tower was especially hard hit, as only half of the collapsed walls had been repaired, and the defense range of the castle walls was only half of that of other castles.
The defense of the Great Wall has been adjusted accordingly after many battles. In addition to strictly defending its own position, each castle has also formed a mobile force to assist in the attack on the southern slope of the Great Wall.
However, the White Walkers changed their attack strategy to attack all fronts this time. The pressure brought by concentrating superior forces to attack a few points still made the defenders a little confused by the sudden attack. Although the troops were sufficient, the weak defense of the city still caused the relatively weak beacon tower castle and the southern and northern city walls to fall under the sudden attack. The defenders could only retreat to the towers and passages inside the Great Wall to defend.
The zombies came too fast and too fiercely, and the situation at the Beacon Tower soon fell into crisis. Viserys had no choice but to rescue the Beacon Tower, knowing that the enemy was using the same old trick again and splitting their forces from the east and west to pull him back.
As expected, as soon as Viserys appeared, the Ice Dragon Summoner who had disappeared for a long time appeared in the direction of Greyguard Castle.
There was only one, and it immediately fell silent after summoning the not-so-big ice dragon.
With Viserys there, the ice dragon only did a little damage to the wall before it shattered.
But soon, Viserys realized that the enemy's attack on the Great Wall was a test, both to test the defense distribution of the Great Wall and to test Viserys's position.
Because immediately afterwards, without the need for the Three-Eyed Raven to deliver the intelligence, Viserys himself felt it through the scattered believers. A quarter of an hour after the battle broke out at the Wall, Winterfell and White Harbor in the North, the Twins in the Riverlands, Seaforth, some human settlements, and even Riverrun all showed signs of the White Walker army gathering to attack the city.
The White Walkers deliberately avoided Raventree Keep, the intelligence center of the Three-Eyed Raven.
Then, the Three-Eyed Raven brought Viserys intelligence about other areas where Viserys' followers were not distributed. In the Vale, the White Walkers gathered their troops and finally began to attack the big castle. Iron Oak Castle and Red Fort became the targets of the first large-scale attack by the White Walkers in the Vale. In King's Landing, Harrenhal had fallen after Jaime's evacuation, and the White Walkers' assembled troops officially marched to the city of King's Landing.
In fact, this attack extends beyond Westeros.
The Three-Eyed Raven brought Viserys intelligence about several city-states in Essos that had been out of touch for a long time since the Long Night.
After Essos entered the Long Night, when the White Walkers in Westeros were pouring into the inland, the city-state of Lorath on the eastern continent fell silently at some point. It is said that the Ibbenese who were selling whale oil during the Long Night brought a large number of ghosts on the whaling ship and swaggered into the port of Lorath.
The White Walkers used the Ibbenese and Trojan Horse tactics to invade the city-state of Lorath.
The Loras fleet and mercenaries had no time to react and were caught off guard by the White Walker's center-blooming tactics, and were completely wiped out.
Lolas only held out for less than two days before all the large and small human-inhabited islands in the Lolas Archipelago fell.
As the poorest, smallest and most isolated of the nine free trade city-states, none of the hundreds of thousands of humans in the city-state of Lolas survived.
This indicates that there is also an invasion of the White Walker army from the direction of Essos, and the White Walker invaders have entered the snowball stage.
The Iban people became the first "traitors" to surrender to the White Walkers during the Long Night. The Iban people are one of the few peoples who sailed to the eastern waters of the Shivering Sea. They make a living by hunting whales in the Shivering Sea. The people of this ethnic group are often described as hairy, short and fat, and have a harsh voice. The Iban people are discriminated against in the world of ice and fire because they are hairy and are contemptuously called long-haired people. They are even suspected of reproductive isolation from other humans, and it is difficult for them to reproduce normal offspring with other races.
It was not until the Ibbenese revealed their true colors as traitors that the Three-Eyed Raven and R'hllor realized that after a breach in the Wall, it was very likely that a large number of White Walker troops had sailed from the outer snowfields of the White Wasteland on Ibbenese ships into Ibben, a colonial island in the north of the Ibbenese kingdoms of Ifveron, using it as an outpost for their invasion of Essos.
At the same time as Lorath was captured, the White Walkers divided their forces from the Old Isth, New Isth, and Fang Bay of the Ivervalon Kingdoms and went upstream along the rivers in the middle of Essos, directly into a Dothraki inland lake called the "womb of the world" by the Dothraki people, and penetrated deep into the Dothraki grasslands. If nothing unexpected happens, this group of White Walkers will advance all the way south along the Bone Mountains, spread into the Dothraki Sea, kill all living things they see, and push the ice and snow to the bloody wasteland in the south of Dothraki.
With the fall of Lorath, the tide of White Walker corpses will pose a threat to the western city-states of Braavos, Qohor, and Norvos in Essos at the same time.
As for the northern part of Essos, which borders the delta of the Sarn River in the Trembling Sea, there were originally two cities called the "Kingdom of Sarnor" composed of the remnants of an ancient country, Saias and Selys. They were invaded by the Ibbenese and the Dothraki in history, but they remained strong, leaving more than 20,000 remnants. Unfortunately, when the gods were not paying attention, they were like fallen leaves, and were destroyed by a small group of white walkers who invaded Essos. As for their Lorath colony at the northern estuary, the port of Moroxi, which was plundered by the Lorath colonists for fisheries and mining, was silent without any sound.
By the time the news reached Viserys, it was already outdated information and was very inaccurate. It was unclear how many troops the White Walkers had in Essos and where their main attack direction was.
But what made Viserys even more nervous was that when he got the news, the forces formed by the R'hllor emissary had not fought a direct battle with the White Walker army, but instead launched a heavy attack on the human side. The news brought by the Three-Eyed Raven said that the Red God's "Red Hand Fire Guards" - the Red God's version of the Crusaders, had forced Qohor to station Fire Guards not long ago. After entering the city-state of Qohor, although they assisted in the city defense according to the agreement, they also took advantage of the situation to carry out a religious purge of the Black Goat Cult of Qohor and other sects, causing a storm in the city for a while.
Under pressure, Qohor, from the governor to the common people, all converted to R'hllor.
This move aroused concerns in Norvos, causing the Governor of Norvos to reject the "assistance" of R'hllor's Fire Guards. R'hllor's messenger, who might have been possessed by Chiang Kai-shek, was determined to achieve the effect of "pacifying the country before fighting the enemy", so he formed an army and marched to Norvos in the long night to exert military pressure.
Viserys felt ashamed of the actions of the emissary R'hllor. Even with the blessing of "miracle", he could still create such a situation. This emissary could be described as "extraordinarily talented".
As for how the situation is developing over there now.
Westeros was busy with its own affairs, and Viserys had no time to care about the current situation in Essos.
Let’s get back to the war situation in Westeros.
The White Walker army's all-out attack across Westeros was clearly a long-planned move, which made people suspect that their combat deployment had already been outlined before they poured into the inland, and that they are now just carrying out the plan to wipe out the rebels in Westeros step by step.
From a global perspective, the current situation is extremely dire.
Although there was no astonishing ice dragon power like the first attack on the Wall, this attack was undoubtedly the most fierce attack since the White Walkers invaded Westeros in the past four months - yes, from the sense of time, it has been nearly four months since the first defense of the Wall, but in these four months, apart from the constant harassment of the Wall, there have only been two major battles. One was the defense of the Wall, and the other was the Northern counterattack led by Viserys.
Of course, the two sides did not confront each other in complete silence. Many small and medium-sized battles were fought around some important places in the North, such as Winterfell, White Harbor, the Streamlands, the Stone Coast, and Flint's Finger. However, they usually ended in failure on the human side, with the loss of territory and men.
During this period, some things happened that seemed extremely contrary to the will of Heaven in the past. In the past, no one would have dared to believe that people from the Stone Coast and Streamlands of the North would rely on Greyjoy's ships to evacuate the North, abandoning their ancestors' land and houses, and abandoning all their winter supplies to flee to the Iron Islands.
Northerners fleeing to the Iron Islands to survive? In the past, even the craziest drunkard would not have believed such a thing would happen.
However, despite the fact that humans have tried their best to survive, the White Walker army's scattershot tactics that caused the situation to deteriorate allowed the White Walkers' power to poison most of Westeros, killing and transforming countless humans and animals that had survived and inherited in Westeros for thousands of years.
Now the all-out attack by the White Walkers should be the most fierce offensive Westeros has faced since the beginning of the Long Night.
Viserys judged that the White Walkers were approaching his preparation area. In addition to the uncertain situation in the valley, there would be variables. The White Walkers had little room for maneuver after their rapid advance in the past four months. Next, the White Walkers would either enter more remote ravines and primeval forests to continue to replenish their troops, or they would have to gather their forces to form a corps and eliminate the human fortresses designed by Viserys in the river one by one.
Even if the fortresses in Hejian are destroyed, the White Walker army will face the well-prepared Southland and the numerous passes in the Westland. The scattering tactics will not be so effective in areas where humans have planned to gather. In particular, the military stations between the various human settlements in the Southland will effectively become an obstacle to the scattering tactics.
The climate in the south is much less cold during the long nights than in the central and northern regions of Westeros. Castles can support and coordinate with each other when necessary. Military stations serve as hubs connecting gathering places and warning beacons, effectively avoiding the possibility of field battles between outbound troops, militia organizations, and White Walkers.
Viserys had made sufficient preparations in the south. All previous arrangements were designed to enable the defenders to hold out to the death. Almost all civilians in the South, Stormlands, and Dorne, regardless of gender, age or status, would receive simple education on how to defend the castle during the winter - in particular, the requirement to promote militia organizations to conduct exercises such as throwing stones and fire from the city walls, carrying goods, and assisting with logistics.
Viserys actually required the local lords to "use military force as relentlessly as possible" in several of his territories, making sure that every time a city was taken, the White Walkers would lose a tooth.
Preparations and armaments are already sufficient. The only thing missing now is to make the princes and people in the direct-controlled areas fully understand the cruelty of the situation, instill the belief in victory, and make them believe that under the leadership of Viserys, they will actively participate in the war and will definitely win.
So, Viserys still has one more move to make.
And this step takes place in King's Landing.
"What do you mean by not knowing how many enemy troops there are?"
At the Red Keep, an increasingly suspicious Cersei looks suspiciously at the Lannister knight sent by Jaime to demand command of the gold cloaks.
"Queen, their arrival is accompanied by a blizzard, and even the sharpest-eyed scouts cannot count their numbers, even with binoculars."
The Queen Mother glanced coldly and said, "What is the matter with Jaime asking for command of the gold cloaks? I told Ser Osfryd to listen to Jaime's orders."
"Really? That's a pity, Queen." The knight was a little stunned for a moment. "In fact, when the zombie tide appeared, Ser Osfryd was guarding the Dragon Gate city wall, but when the enemy used catapults to throw the wights into the city causing panic, Ser Osfryd fled after a frontal attack. The supervising team captured Ser Osfryd. Ser Jaime finally led his troops to recapture the city wall, but in a rage, he said nothing and asked Ser Payne to chop off Osfryd's head on behalf of King Tommen. Some commanders of the gold cloaks were emotional and refused to obey orders. They want your orders, Queen."
"What!" Cersei's eyes widened, unable to believe that the loyal Kettleblack she had arranged was dead. "How could Jaime kill my garrison commander without asking me?"
"He is the commander, Your Majesty," the knight replied neither servilely nor arrogantly, but with a hint of contempt, "but he is also an undeniable deserter. The Dragon Gate was almost breached because of him."
In fact, the situation is more complicated than the Knights reported.
Osfried returned to King's Landing because of Jaime's defeat. He was dissatisfied with Jaime being the commander-in-chief with only one hand, so he did not get along with Jaime on the issue of city defense. Jaime knew that Cersei and Catelblack had an affair because of the inside information he got from Lancel, and he hated them.
Now that Osfryd had almost lost the city gate, with hatred in the past and resentment now, how could Jaime let him live?
Speaking of the current defense of King's Landing, the composition of the army is also unique. Due to the critical situation, Jaime had to hand over part of the city defense to the Warrior Sons and the Capital Garrison of King's Landing.
The capital garrison had just been engaged in the battle for less than half a minute when it completely exposed its nature of being good at civil wars but not good at foreign wars. They were very skilled in guarding the city gates, oppressing the people, demanding bribes, and sealing the gates when necessary. However, facing the vicious zombie tide, the garrison, which had been immersed in the gentle land of King's Landing for a long time and blindly expanded to suppress the civilians, immediately exposed its underwear. These idle people in King's Landing who were purely for money were not warriors at all.
A group of honorable warriors have died in the Battle of Blackwater, and most of the knights who were knighted have left the garrison. After Cersei's blind expansion, the current garrison has become an armed group that looks militarily strong, but is actually an empty shell composed of cowards.
These people have made a lot of money passing through the city gate over the past six months at Cersei's request to seal the gate. They are all making a lot of money, so how could they be willing to die here to protect King's Landing?
Many garrison commanders wanted to go to the south of King's Landing to "guard the city gates for the Queen Mother and prevent mobs from causing chaos", and did not want to fight for their lives with the zombie army in the north of the city.
Jaime is more straightforward. He thinks that by killing Osfryd he can take control of the garrison. However, the garrison is no longer what he is familiar with. Osfryd is just an agent leader of a bunch of people who rely on the defense of King's Landing to take advantage of the situation to make money. The garrison has been nurtured by desire and become a useless freak with no fighting spirit.
Only Cersei felt that these people had received her favor and could be relied upon as the basis for her rule.
Now Jaime's request for command is nothing more than to kill another group of commanders and use the threat of death to temporarily unite these useless people. Let them know that if they fight the White Walkers, they may still survive, but if they don't, they will die. In fact, the knight came to the Red Castle to report just to ask for a nominal endorsement.
Under the city wall, Jaime had already carried out a round of cleansing of the garrison. Ser Payne's sword was almost bent by chopping heads before he drove the gold cloaks of the garrison back to the city wall.
James and the supervisory team stayed directly at the Dragon Gate.
"Then let Jaime take over the city guard." Cersei didn't hear the knight's hidden meaning, but gave an answer. Then, she asked Coburn, the intelligence chief beside him, "Where is my son?"
Seeing that their goal had been achieved, the knights sent by Jaime quickly left the Red Castle.
After watching the Lannister knight go away, Qyburn answered, "His Majesty is in the Great Sept of Baelor, receiving the High Septon's blessing along with the believers who are hiding there to pray. His Majesty will then personally ascend the city walls with his guards to comfort the defenders and the warrior sons and boost morale."
Although the value and significance of the title "King Baratheon" are declining nowadays, the presence of the king in person can always boost morale.
After all, now the Warrior Sons, the Lannister army, the nobles of King's Landing, and the Gold Cloaks all nominally support King Tommen.
Cersei raised an eyebrow, "Tell me Tommen is not in danger doing what he did. Jaime assured me that he is safe."
"Your Majesty, all the soldiers and the warriors I created will swear to protect the safety of His Majesty Tommen until the death."
Cersei glanced at the dead soldiers that Qyburn had created for her and suddenly asked, "Will these things not be affected by the magic of the White Walkers?"
"Don't worry, Your Majesty." Qyburn was very confident. "These beautiful creations will only obey your orders. They have no heads, only the marks left by their souls on their armor. They are both alive and dead. This is the necromancy that Dr. Marwyn, a doctor of the Citadel whose talent is recognized even by King Targaryen, brought from Asshai."
"I don't want to know how you did it," Cersei glared at him in dissatisfaction, "Also, don't mention Targaryen in front of me!"
Coben stopped talking: "I'm sorry, Your Majesty."
Cersei asked again, "Have all the nobles who fought for me at the walls, the wives, daughters, and mothers of the commanders in King's Landing, been taken to the Red Keep?"
"of course."
"Very well. The hens themselves are worthless, but I must reassure them of their cocks. Those creatures are out to kill. If the walls fall, I need not worry about my guards betraying me, or even consider surrendering. I only need to hold out for Maegor's Holdfast until they reach me." Cersei's face turned cold. "No one can take the Red Keep from me."
Coben looked at her with deep eyes: "Of course, Your Majesty."
Not long after.
The commander of the garrison at the South Gate came to ask for a meeting.
Every time she opened the door to the throne room, Cersei could smell the smoke coming in from outside.
The commander smiled and looked at Cersei flatteringly. "Your Majesty, the northern wall seems to be safe for the time being, but there is some unrest near the south city. Some drunks from Flea Bottom want to take the opportunity to rob people, and there are also people lurking outside several gates in the south, maybe they want to attack the gates."
Cersei asked first, "Did you hear anything about my son's movements when you came to the Red Keep?"
The commander flattered even more: "I heard that His Majesty was on his way to the Gate of the Gods, escorted by the Warrior's Sons, the Kingsguard, and the Guards. He was chatting and laughing with the captain of the Warrior's Sons as they passed through the road. He is very brave, everyone says so."
"He must live." Cersei looked at the commander angrily. She thought of the words of the Toad Witch for no reason, that her three children would be wrapped in golden shrouds. She shook her head to dispel the thought. Although Sister Margaery of the Great Sept was not killed, she had been driven back to the South by Cersei's trick. She had put an end to the prophecy and expelled the beautiful woman who would take everything from her. "Talk about the South Gate, which you are responsible for. No traitor is allowed to leave the city. Anyone who wants to attack the South Gate must be dealt with with crossbows and swords. Put their heads on guns and hang them under the city gate as a warning. This is another lesson for you if you want to work by my side. At times like this, you must not be merciful. Traitors and cowards will pop up like mushrooms after rain. The only way to keep them loyal and quiet is to make sure they fear you more than the enemy."
"Of course, Your Majesty." The commander put on an extremely flattering smile, "When I came here, I saw many people gathering in the square outside the Red Castle, asking to take refuge in the castle. They are not mobs, but wealthy merchants in King's Landing."
"Tell them to leave. If they don't obey, shoot a few of them. Under no circumstances are unnecessary people allowed into the Red Fort."
"Your Majesty." The commander's flattering smile paused as Cersei spoke, "They are all willing to dedicate themselves to the royal family—"
"That's enough!" Cersei looked down at the commander with disdain. "You heard my orders."
"Yes." The commander bowed uneasily and left.
Cersei angrily cursed: "Guys like this are not worthy of guarding my gate. I really want to take a sword to the battlefield, chop one by one, and use their blood to highlight my bravery and honor! Damn it, I should have been born a man, picking up swords, spears and maces to charge into battle, instead of ruling here with wisdom and brains."
Koben below opened his mouth when he heard this: "." But in the end, he said nothing.
"Hiss!" Suddenly, Cersei hissed on the throne. She was so excited that she accidentally cut her hand with the Iron Throne.
This is not the first time.
This made Cersei even more angry!
Coben was about to step forward to treat the Queen Mother's wound.
Suddenly, someone else came outside the throne room. Osney Kettleblack, the youngest of the three brothers, hurried over and said, "It's bad, your majesty is injured. The wights fell from the sky to the Shoemaker Square and attacked the Gate of the Gods from behind." He stammered, "The Gate of the Gods was attacked from both sides, your majesty..."
"Damn it! Seven Hells! What are the Warrior Sons and the Kingsguard doing!" Cersei jumped up from the throne when she heard that Tommen was injured. "You, and you, you are one of the guards under the King's guard. Aren't you supposed to be protecting His Majesty the King?"
"Your Majesty, Ser Meryn Trant has ordered me to return and request reinforcements."
"Who came up with the idea of letting the king reach the city gate? Damn him! He's crazy! Pass on my order, immediately dispatch a commando team from the Red Keep guard to attack, and you go with us, go to the Gate of the Gods, take the king back from those damned ghosts, and escort him back to the city!"
"Queen Mother, this——"
Cersei narrowed her eyes. "You don't understand me?"
Osney did not dare to disobey the order and left.
Cersei looked at Qyburn and said, "Go and prepare, Qyburn. Those monsters are coming. No one can take the Red Keep from me! Never!"
The situation at the Gods Gate was unclear, but Cersei, who believed she was in control of the situation, immediately considered that the Gods Gate could no longer be defended when she heard the word "pincer attack."
Less than half a minute after Koben took the order and left, Onis ran back to the Red Castle with mud marks all over his face: "It's bad, Your Majesty the Queen Mother, the guards of the Gate of the Gods disobeyed the king's orders, saying that the commando you sent out falsely conveyed the king's orders and confused the king's mind. They killed the commander."
Cersei panicked, "What? Where's my son?"
"His Majesty Tommen is still at the city gate. I don't know if he's dead or alive."
Cersei looked at him fiercely, "You didn't get on the wall!"
Onis cried, "Your Majesty, I was in the rear army, helping to relieve the siege of the city gate, but I didn't expect to see them chop off the head of the commando captain, so I ran back to report."
"The Gate of the Gods is guarding it?"
"Yes."
"I don't know whether my son is alive or dead?"
"Yes."
"Damn it! Damn it!" Cersei came to her senses and ordered the two undead guards around her, "You, go with Onis to the Gate of the Gods to confirm my son's condition. If he is injured, bring him back to the castle. If Onis dares to retreat and escape, kill him without mercy!"
The two silent guards took orders and stepped down from the throne.
Onis shouted: "Your Majesty, every word I said is true——"
"Get out!" Cersei screamed, "Onis, if you say another word in front of me, I will let them kill you now!"
The throne room quickly became deserted.
Cersei sat on the throne anxiously and unknowingly cut her calf again, but she was unaware.
Suddenly, chaotic screams were heard from the Red Castle.
Soon, a guard from the Red Keep came to report: "It's bad, Your Majesty, a ghost has entered the Red Keep from the stables of the Prime Minister's Tower."
"What!!!" Cersei clenched her hands around a sword on the throne and gritted her teeth, "What are you all doing?"
"Your Majesty, please move to a safe place immediately."
"A safe place?" Cersei asked bitterly. "Where?"
"This"
"A bunch of rubbish! Rubbish!" Cersei screamed frantically, "Go find Jaime! Get him back! Come back to protect me!"
The appearance of the ghost in the Red Keep completely ignited the fear that had always been in Cersei's heart. She no longer cared about her duty to guard the city walls and her royal demeanor. She just wanted Jaime to come back to protect her safety.
By this time, the chaotic sounds in the Red Castle were becoming louder and louder.
Bursts of terrified screams could be heard from the women in Maegor's Holdfast. Cersei was extremely uneasy. She ran out of the throne room like a madman and came to the wall of the Red Castle to observe the situation from above.
However, in the direction of the Prime Minister's Tower, a green wildfire was burning fiercely, engulfing the entire tower.
The light was so bright in the night, as if a torch was lit in the Red Keep on Aegon's High Hill, and the eerie green flame illuminated half of King's Landing.
"Damn it! Someone must have set the wildfire under the Hand's Tower on fire during the defense!" Cersei was panicked and couldn't help worrying whether the wildfire would spread to Maegor's Holdfast.
She knew very well what she had ordered Coburn to do. Now the cellars and rooms under the Red Castle were filled with wildfire jars.
When Cersei saw the fire from the direction of the Hand's Tower, her face turned pale as gold paper for a moment, with no trace of blood.
Fortunately, not long after, Coben came back to report: "It didn't spread. A little bird discovered it in time and diverted part of the wildfire in the direction of the Prime Minister's Tower. The zombies pouring in from that direction were burned to death."
Although there was no need to worry about the hidden danger of the Red Castle being blown away for the time being, the bright wildfire in the Red Castle that could illuminate half of King's Landing had been seen by everyone in King's Landing.
How would the defenders on the city wall feel?
The thick smoke and flames from the Prime Minister's Tower finally attracted Jaime from the city wall. Originally, Jaime would never obey Cersei's orders, but the fire from the Prime Minister's Tower caused great panic among the soldiers guarding the city. As the commander representing the "royal family", Jaime had to come back to confirm the situation.
When Jaime returned to the Red Keep and quickly confirmed the situation, he planned to leave some men behind and return to the city wall immediately without even meeting Cersei.
Unexpectedly, instead of him looking for Cersei, Cersei came looking for him.
"Jaime!" Cersei looked at Jaime excitedly from the tower above Maegor's Tower. "I knew you would come to protect me. Tell me, tell me the truth, is King's Landing going to fall?"
Jaime didn't expect Cersei to ask such a discouraging question right away. Even the guards around Jaime looked at him sideways. Jaime gritted his teeth and said, "We can hold it, we will hold it!" Then he turned around and signaled the guards to set up defenses, leaving space for the two to talk.
"No, you're lying to me." Cersei shook her head. "If they have the ability to enter the Red Keep, they have the ability to enter King's Landing from other places." Cersei's mind was very flexible at this time. "It is said that the wights have their memories of their previous lives. Smugglers, spies, little birds, they know the secret passages of King's Landing, and they will come out from corners we don't know! After Varys dies, I should find his little birds one by one and kill them one by one!"
As if to verify Cersei's words, flames rose from the direction of Flea Bottom, and it was obvious that some unexpected unrest had occurred there.
Seeing James didn't speak.
Cersei stepped forward and took Jaime's hand.
"James, do you remember the promise you made to me?"
James was puzzled: "What?"
"When the news of the fall of the Westerlands reached King's Landing, you said we could escape to Essos, like Queen Rhaella to Aerys, and you would be Willem Darry to Tommen."
Jaime looked at Cersei in disbelief: "What are you talking about?"
Cersei glanced around and whispered to Jaime: "There is a secret passage from the Red Keep to the port of King's Landing. I have prepared the ship. Jaime, you, Tommen, and I can -"
"No!" Jaime looked at her. "You clearly said that you would rather die than leave King's Landing and leave the Red Keep."
"Yes, but that is a threat to the Targaryens, not these ghosts." Cersei described the future to Jaime. "If King's Landing falls, they will pour into the Stormlands along the Kingsroad. Let them fight the Targaryens. We will go to Essos, Pentos, and Tyrosh. When everything is over and they are both defeated, we will come back, okay?"
James felt as if he was in a dream. He suspected that what he heard was just dream talking and didn't know what to say.
But then they heard a commotion outside the Red Keep. It turned out that two White Guards, Meryn Trant and Boros Blount, were carrying the unconscious King Tommen back to the Red Keep.
"You called back Tommen?" Jaime remembered someone had told him that Cersei had called back Joffrey before the Battle of the Blackwater, causing the army to collapse, forcing Tyrion to lead the troops himself. He had discussed this with the High Sparrow to make sure that this would not happen again.
But why?
Soon, the answer was revealed: "His Majesty Tommen is injured!"
They soon saw the king, whose face was as pale as paper.
Jaime looked over to Cersei. "What's going on?"
"Everything happened so fast. A ghoul ball thrown by a catapult fell on our heads. A ghoul was smashed, but its hand still scratched your majesty's leg. The ghost scratched a blood vessel. The bleeding could not be stopped on the wall. We had to bring your majesty back to the maester."
"Oh." James murmured, his heart suddenly confused.
But Cersei yelled, "No! What are you all doing? If anything happens to Tommen, I want you all to die!"
Jaime looked at Tommen who was carried back by the Kingsguard, then looked at the increasingly fierce fire at the Prime Minister's Tower, then looked in the direction of the Flea Market which was already in chaos, then at the sparks gradually appearing in other areas of the city, and finally looked towards the direction of the city wall where the fierce fighting was in full swing.
The flames from inside and outside the city walls made the sky above King Kong glow red and green.
At a certain moment, flames from the direction of the old city gate and the city wall burst out on the top of the city, like dazzling fireworks exploding in the night, so bright that it was terrifying.
Finally, Jaime realized helplessly: all strategies had been exhausted, and King's Landing was about to fall.
