Chapter 24 Dream

As soon as Daenerys saw Illyrio, her heart stopped beating. Viserys had just whispered to her in the pavilion by the sea. She inevitably connected the two things together and became nervous.

But that's just Daenerys being too concerned.

Viserys was very calm. When he saw Illyrio, he was the first to speak: "It's rare to meet the Lord Governor in the garden. How come you have the leisure to come to the garden to appreciate the flowers and scenery?"

In front of Illyrio was a cluster of well-tended rose beds with a very romantic feel.

"Haha, to be honest with you, Your Majesty, I'm not interested in these flowers and plants. I just saw them in other courtyards and I just followed the trend." Illyrio said jokingly.

Viserys didn't know if Illyrio was trying to maintain his upstart persona, but that didn't stop him from talking nonsense: "It's rare to find such a gorgeous and beautiful variety. The flowers are full, noble in shape, rich in color, and graceful. Is this from Highgarden?"

"I cannot say for sure, Your Grace. This was left by the original owner when the house was purchased." Illyrio saw that Viserys was about to have a long conversation with him about the rose garden, so he quickly changed the subject and said, "In fact, I was waiting for you, Your Grace."

"Oh?"

"There is a feast to be held," Illyrio said. "Would your Grace like to attend?"

"A banquet?" Viserys's expression suddenly became nervous. "I'm invited? Someone else knows that I'm in Pentos? My whereabouts have been exposed? Is this a conspiracy of the usurper?"

Illyrio looked at Viserys' exaggeratedly wide eyes and solemn expression, wondering how much of this expression was true and how much was false. But in addition to resistance, his words undoubtedly also expressed accusations of his secrecy. Illyrio hurriedly explained: "No, no, your majesty, I did not make it clear. You are not invited to the banquet. I was invited. Allow me to explain. This is an auction banquet. There are some rumors that a dragon egg will appear at the banquet."

"Dragon eggs?" Viserys said, in shock. "Really?"

"Rumors are unfounded and cannot be verified," Illyrio said uncertainly.

Viserys thought to himself, "But?"

As expected, Illyrio said, "But I thought your majesty might be interested in this, so I came to ask if you would like to participate."

"I would," Viserys answered. "But, Illyrio, the Usurper has a great price on my head. He has tried again and again, I can assure you of that. He has hired assassins to keep his eye on me, the last of the dragons. He cannot sleep or eat while I am alive. You may not notice us in the shadows, but do you know the risk I would run if the Usurper learned of my presence at the feast?"

Viserys's expression was serious and his words were solemn.

Illyrio thought: "You have been very attentive at other banquets. Why didn't you think of this?" He said, "Many dignitaries will attend the banquet. The host will naturally protect the guests. In fact, guests can wear masks at such auctions. If you wear a mask, I guarantee that no one will know who you are."

"Illyrio, you go on your own. If there is a dragon egg, it would be best if you can get it, but if you can't, it doesn't matter." Viserys said resolutely. "You may think I am suspicious, but this is different from the past. I can't take the risk again."

The words Viserys prepared were always full of hints, which made those who were interested wonder: [What is the difference between now and the past? Why can't we take risks again? ]

Illyrio bowed his head in awe. "Your Majesty, please forgive me for my inconsiderateness."

"It's not your fault, Illyrio." Viserys comforted his subjects like a monarch. "You don't understand the danger of the 'usurper'. I haven't taken root in one place for many years. I haven't settled down. Not only did I not find a firm supporter of the king, but I also avoided being hunted down. Now I finally have a supporter like you who is willing to work, and I... Remember I told you that day that what I need most now is time. It's rare to have such a safe place now, and I don't want to give it up easily."

Viserys's attitude was quite sincere.

Illyrio had no choice but to answer: "Your Majesty, I know your wishes. Please forgive my abruptness."

Illyrio came suddenly and left quickly, and soon took his leave.

Although Viserys looked calm as always, he felt a lot of pressure in his heart. Facing Illyrio's wave after wave of temptations, even though he was mentally prepared, he still couldn't handle it easily when he actually faced it. Illyrio's temptation behavior was radical. He was even willing to use something like a dragon egg to plot. He was really determined to catch the wolf without sacrificing the child.

Viserys naturally thought that Illyrio was setting a trap for him, but this guy didn't say anything definite. The news of the dragon eggs was probably just bait to attract Viserys. If he really went to the so-called banquet, the people and things he met would be all controlled by Illyrio. Viserys lacked intelligence and had no idea what kind of trap Illyrio would set for him at the banquet.

At times like this, Viserys must control the pace on his own side as much as possible, do less and make fewer mistakes. If he pretends to do things at his own pace, it will make him appear to be relying on others, making Illyrio afraid to act rashly.

He was eager to see some feedback from his tests on Daenerys.

Daenerys didn't know what he was thinking at the moment. She lowered her head and pondered what he had just said to Illyrio. Those familiar words made her vaguely think of him before he was struck by lightning. She thought of how he always said that the assassins sent by the usurper were chasing after him, but Dany hadn't seen even half an assassin in these years; she thought of how he kept talking about real dragons and his crazy desire for the throne across the sea.
She couldn't tell whether what he said was true or false? Was what he said to Illyrio all lies? Could the whispers he said to her be taken seriously?
The courage she had finally gathered to stand shoulder to shoulder with him was quietly dissipating without her noticing. Dany stared at him blankly, trying to keep up with his pace, trying to maintain her courage. She tried to clear her mind of all the random thoughts and said to herself again: [We are a family.]

They walked around in the sun for a few more laps. Viserys had been walking around in the sun for some reason, and Dany was dizzy from the hot midday sun. When Viserys suddenly suggested going back to rest, Dany was secretly relieved.

After lunch, Dany walked a long way and was exposed to the strong sunlight. She returned to the room and sat by the window in the shade, closing her eyes in silence for a while. She felt drowsy and soon fell asleep in a daze.

Dany falls asleep and dreams of Viserys.

At first, in her dream, Viserys was beating her and bullying her again. She was so frightened that she was at a loss. She wanted to run away from him, but her body would not obey her. He struck her several times, knocking her to the ground. She was covered in blood and moaned with her eyes closed.

Suddenly, there was a roar like thunder, followed by a terrifying lightning. When she opened her eyes again, Viserys was no longer hitting her. He smiled at her first, then without looking at her again, he strode away into the distance, his face full of confidence, his steps firm, he did not look back, and he was getting farther and farther away from her. She suddenly felt abandoned, and panicked to catch up with the figure who was going away. But her feet were too heavy to lift an inch. She looked down. There was another Viserys, clinging to her bloody legs with a ferocious face, his nails digging into her skin, as if he wanted to drag her into the bottomless dark abyss. She looked up in shock, and the other Viserys who was going away had disappeared.

The sky is a dark curtain with no end in sight.

The pitch-black dark curtain stood between heaven and earth, overwhelming everything in her vision.

Her senses were in a strange state at some point, as if she was not herself. An unprecedented panic surged from the bottom of her heart.

Leave, leave quickly.

She heard a voice shouting. She looked for the source of the sound, but found that it was her own throat that was beating.
At this point Dany woke up, and when she woke up she found herself shaking all over, sweating profusely. The echo of the dream that had asked her to leave seemed to still echo in her mind.

"What, are you having a nightmare?"

Then she heard Viserys' voice beside her.

Dany was startled for a moment.

When she looked up, she saw Viserys sitting at the window table opposite her, looking at her as if examining her. The sun shone from behind him, casting a shadow on his face.

The echoes in Dany's mind gradually faded away, as if she were hallucinating. She could hear Viserys's concerned greeting: "Dany, you look pale. Are you all right?"

Hearing his concerned greeting, Dany's troubled heart quickly calmed down, and the fear brought by the nightmare seemed to be stripped away.

"It was a nightmare," she said, and she quickly recalled what Viserys had whispered in the pavilion by the sea today. "If you feel anything unusual or dream about anything, remember it and tell me quietly when you have the chance." Not long after he finished speaking, she had an unusual dream. A certain curiosity and uneasy feeling made Dany eager to get some kind of answer. She didn't even know what the question was, but she needed an answer. She lowered her voice and whispered. "I dreamed..."

But when the words came to her lips, Dany didn't know what to say. She felt that the part about Viserys in the dream would definitely make him angry. Would she awaken his "wrath of the sleeping dragon"?
The sudden change in more than 20 days was too short compared to the shadow of fear that lasted for years, and her courage could only carry her so far.

Seeing that Daenerys seemed to be hesitant to speak, Viserys approached her calmly, and naturally stretched out his hands to hold hers gently. He smiled gently and said to her as if to comfort her: "I guess you dreamed of me?"

"." Dany lowered her eyes nervously, not daring to look directly.

"Did I strike you in my dream?" Viserys asked softly. He waited, and when Dany did not know how to answer him, he said apologetically, "I am sorry."

"."Dani was at a loss for a moment.

"That's all in the past." Viserys's hand tightened. "I promised you, Dany, it will never happen again. We are family. The only family we have in the world."

Viserys guided Dany's hand and slowly moved it from the table to his front. He moved closer, as if he wanted to stick to Daenerys. He whispered softly in Dany's ear: "I know you will have countless questions, but believe me. Everything I do is for our better future."

Viserys's warm breath burned Dany's ears, and she held her breath for a moment, not knowing or preparing for what was coming next. Suddenly, she thought of the story of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister queens.

But before she could figure out why she suddenly thought of this, her hand, which was tightly held by Viserys, suddenly felt like it was bitten by a mosquito.

This interrupted Dany's thoughts.

Soon, Dany realized that Viserys was just hugging her gently as if to comfort her. He took her hand and quietly pricked the tip of her finger with a pin, causing blood to drip.

"Do not be afraid, Dany." Viserys' voice was louder and softer, as if to comfort him. "Do not be afraid."

Dany's face was pressed against Viserys' chest. She couldn't see his expression at the moment, but she could only notice that one of Viserys's hands that was holding her hand moved away from hers and then fell on her head, as if holding her head intimately.

But Dany knew full well that Viserys was taking drops of blood from her fingers and bringing them to his mouth.

Dany heard a thumping heartbeat and couldn't tell whether it was her own or Viserys's.

This purposeful hug lasted for a while, until Dany's heartbeat calmed down completely, until she was at a loss as to what to do at this moment, Viserys' voice came from above her head: "Are you feeling better?"

They broke their embrace, and Dany had room to look up at Viserys' face. She saw that he was looking at her with concern.

"Much better." She couldn't say anything else.

Even before nightfall, Dany was unable to free herself from the confusion and worry that had mingled with her thoughts. She knew that what Viserys had said aloud was half-truth and probably not sincere, but was he telling the truth when he whispered to her?
She didn't know and didn't want to think about it.

"We are family." Dani said to herself again before going to bed. "We are each other's only relatives in this world."

She didn't know when she fell asleep, and the dream she had in the afternoon continued.

But at this time, both Viserys were gone, and she was alone in the void, with the sky as the dark curtain with no end in sight.

At one point, she felt like she was in different places at the same time. Half of her was inside the dark curtain, purple dust poured out of her body, was swallowed by the ethereal and deep dark vortex, and finally dissipated like starlight in the dark curtain. The other half of her was outside the dark curtain, watching the purple dust like starlight gradually dissipate in the dark abyss.

As the purple dust was peeled off, the half in the dark curtain gradually became undetectable, as if it was an illusion. Her body felt slightly hot, and she lowered her head, and saw sparks scattered all over her body. She felt a burning breath emanating from the sparks, but this did not cause her any pain. Instead, she felt a comfortable feeling as if her body was being washed with boiling hot water.

In a trance, she could feel the warm blood flowing in her skin.

She felt the warmth was like a mother's embrace, although she had never known what that felt like.
