Chapter 165 The House of Black and White

Chapter 165 The House of Black and White
The Titan of Braavos is a massive stone and bronze statue that guards the entrance to the Great Lagoon in Braavos.

Legend has it that whenever Braavos is in danger, the Titans will wake up, with fire burning in their eyes, waving their creaking stone limbs, rushing into the sea to crush their enemies.

What if the enemy comes from the air? I wonder if they have ever thought about this question.

Around 500 years before Aegon's Landing, the Moonsinger led the first Braavos people to this sanctuary to escape the dragons of Valyria.

Moonsingers are moon singers, clergy of the nomadic Jugsnai people in the Far East. It is said that they have the ability to predict. When they fled with the escaped slaves who founded Braavos, they predicted that there would be a refuge as predicted when they sailed north: behind the pine-covered hills and sea reefs, there is a lagoon, where fog is always there, which can block the eyes of the dragon king flying overhead, so that the dragon king cannot find these refugees.

So these fugitives found this remote, uninhabited secret lagoon in the Eastern Continent and settled down there.

For the first century of its establishment, Braavos's existence was basically unknown, so it was also called the "Secret City". The ruler of Braavos was called the Sea King because the city's power and wealth all came from sailing.

The escaped slaves came from many different places and held many different beliefs, so the founders of Braavos gave all gods a place. The temples of all faiths were concentrated on an island in the city center, called the Isle of the Gods.

The temple of the Thousand-Faced God is also there.

The clouds parted a little before Viserys, and he poked his head out from among them.

A row of rocky ridges rose suddenly from the sea, and a huge lagoon appeared in front of them, with only one gap leading to the open sea.

The Titan stood between two tall mountains, his back turned towards Viserys, his long green hair seemingly dancing in the wind.

His legs were on either side of the gap, each holding a mountain, his broad shoulders looming over the jagged peaks. He wore a crowned half-helm, and his flowing hair was made of green-dyed hemp rope. Around his waist was a green bronze kilt, and his breastplate was also bronze. His legs were made of stone, the same black granite rock on which he stood.

One of the giant's hands rested on the left ridge, his bronze fingers gripping a huge rock; the other hand reached up to the sky, grasping the hilt of a broken sword.

Taking advantage of the fog, Viserys landed on the south side of Braavos and placed Daenerys on a steep ridge where few people had visited. Viserys landed on the relatively gentle back slope. As soon as Daenerys got off the dragon's back, she could overlook the entire Braavos from a high platform.

After riding on Viserys at the fastest speed for more than two days in the sky, she only landed briefly a few times. Even if Daenerys had a strong physical fitness, she had to stay on the back of a dragon for two days at such a high intensity, in the strong wind at high altitude, and she didn't get enough sleep. After landing, she couldn't say a word for a while.

Although Viserys had given Daenerys a full-body riding suit made of wool, velvet, and Myrish lenses with a handmade windproof mirror visor after his last experience of fast flying, she was still a little overwhelmed by Viserys's violent way of traveling. By analogy, it was like a modern person riding a roller coaster for two full days.

Daenerys lifted her jockey's coat and took a deep breath, then raised her hand to Viserys to show him that she was alright, then she sat down and rubbed her thighs, stretching her body.

She really didn't want to see the two bodies hanging stiffly at Viserys' feet, even though they were wrapped tightly in their shrouds.

Yes, the two assassins were now hanging at Viserys' feet, entangled in chains.

One of the two assassins was burned to death on the spot by Viserys' flames, and the other died from excessive blood loss due to a broken arm.

As Daenerys breathed, she smelled the faint smell of blood from the shroud again. She quickly took off her visor with goggles and lay flat on the ground on the ridge, retching.

Seeing this, Viserys quickly moved his huge body to the leeward side, while Daenerys quickly moved to the upwind side and shifted her eyes in another direction.

She took out a huge water bottle from the bag on her back, took herself a few gulps of water, and it took her a long time to recover.

Viserys was a little worried. Daenerys was vomiting and was not fit to fight, but she insisted on coming with him, and Viserys could not persuade her. Fortunately, they finally arrived at their destination safely: "I'll leave you here. You wait here for me. Anyway, they can't tell who is on the dragon's back."

Although the priests of the Red God believed that the Faceless Men would not harm Daenerys, and believed that the weirwood mask left by the pagans at the wedding had the power to protect the holder from magical harm, Viserys still felt that it was a bit risky to bring Daenerys along. He was not very willing to let Daenerys take the risk of touching the mask, even though the mask was in the bag he was carrying on this trip.

"We are here to ask for an explanation. Isn't it completely exposed that there is no one on the dragon's back?" Daenerys waved her hand, took a deep breath, and stood up again to show that she was fine. Then, she said with emotion, "I never thought that returning to Braavos would be in this way."

From here, despite the hazy sea fog, you can see the entire city of Braavos.

The whole city seemed to be a large island, made up of many smaller islands, with gray stone houses arranged in streets and alleys, and the houses were built very closely, leaning against each other. Braavos was a stone city, a gray and white city in the blue ocean.

A wide canal extends straight to the city center. Dozens of stone arch bridges connect the east and the west on the canal. The numerous docks and docks are crowded with boats that look as small as ants from here.

There was the long, wide canal that ran across Braavos, the sweetwater canal that spanned the city, the harbor, the Isle of the Gods.

Here, you can even see the magnificent palace of the Sea King from afar.

Daenerys could no longer remember which house Ser Willem Darry had lived in. She only remembered that it was not far from the Sea King's palace, on a street where the rich and powerful lived under the greystone aqueduct. If she looked up, she could see the Sweetwater Canal, supported by three stepped bridge arches, towering over the city.

Then, she turned her attention to the Island of Gods.

The Temple of the Moonsinger was a great palace of white marble with a great silver dome; the Temple of the Lord of Light was built of red rock with a great square tower on top that held a huge iron brazier with a blazing flame; and the Sanctuary was a large brick building where many lesser gods, forgotten spirits from all over the world, were enshrined.

Her gaze finally turned to the Black and White Courtyard, which was located on a small rocky hill on an Island of the Gods. It was a temple dedicated to the Thousand-Faced God and the headquarters of the Faceless Men, with a pointed black-tiled roof.

Viserys moved, shrinking his body, and joined Daenerys in gathering up the bundle of equipment that had lost its support on his back and had fallen off.

Viserys spoke of his plan. "Strap the puppet to my back, just in case. Let it accompany me for the first attack. Once I have made contact with the Sea King and have confirmed that the dispute can be resolved peacefully, I will return here to pick you up."

Two large packages were tied to Viserys's back throughout the journey. They were the weapons and props prepared for Daenerys, mainly her armor and a camouflage doll.

Viserys could ensure that Daenerys would not fall off the dragon's back, but he had to prevent the enemy from using any strange spells to hurt her, after all, the place they were about to go to was the headquarters of the Faceless Men. They came in a hurry this time and could not wait for the Braavos banker on Dragonstone to notify their Sea King in advance.

Therefore, there is a possibility of accidental firing between the two sides.

Viserys transformed back into human form, and the chains around the dragon's feet fell to the ground with a clang.

The curse on Viserys' hands and back had not yet dissipated, and large pieces of dragon scales covered them hideously. His right hand was still in the shape of a dragon claw, making it inconvenient to hold things.

He first untied the chains wrapped around the shrouds of the two bodies, so that there was no need to transport the bodies in this way anymore.

Then, he went to pick up the two large bags of equipment that fell from his back: "I'll help you put on your armor first, you wait here, I'll pick you up later."

"Then you be careful. I will be here watching you lift up the roof of the temple, expose their darkness and secrets under the burning flames, and let the world know that the Targaryen Dragon King is by no means a weak mortal who can be bullied." Daenerys responded.

As she spoke, she took off the thick riding clothes she wore for traveling, and then put on the mail armor with the help of Viserys, and then put on the dragon king's armor inlaid with gold and gems given by the Tyrosh ambassador. When this set of equipment was put on, she would put on the dragon king's helmet later, and she would be a dragon rider who could not be distinguished between male and female.

Although it was not very convenient to move after putting on the armor, she still helped Viserys stand up the doll in the package, put on a set of camouflage half armor for the doll, and finally solemnly put on the gorgeous dragon king's helmet on it, making sure every hidden button was fastened.

After all, the puppet represents Viserys when Daenerys is unable to play.

Then the human-shaped Viserys carefully carried the puppet on his back and slowly used magic to reconstruct the dragon's body bit by bit, gradually using magic to make the dragon's body bigger.

Compared with a few days ago, his dragon body had changed slightly, but the left side of his head had a small snow-white horn protruding from the top of his skull.

The snow-white horn was very small and could not be seen unless you looked carefully. If people who did not know the truth saw it, it would look like a layer of white frost on the left side of Viserys' head.

That was the manifestation of the ice magic that Viserys had absorbed from the curse that possessed him in the past few days. It was a horn representing ice magic - although the ice magic was pitifully small.

Even Viserys was surprised that the strange daggers used by the two faceless assassins to kill him contained four kinds of cursed magic: ice, fire, water, and a magic of the earth that should belong to the old gods.

It is from this that Viserys speculated that at least four powerful gods and demigods were behind the destruction of Valyria, and that the Thousand-Faced God was not a real god, but the product of cooperation among mysterious forces of different forces for a common purpose.

Therefore, the magic and props of the Faceless Men will have different magic powers, even contradictory magic powers. They will have a different version of the transformation magic "Flame Light Weaving" related to the Lord of Light. Their weapons can kill anyone in this world who claims to be undead.
The sources of their spells are very diverse.

Viserys originally kept his distance from the Faceless Men, but they should never point their spearheads at Viserys and carried out assassination attacks one after another. Even Viserys could not stand being harassed by these assassins with strange whereabouts and bizarre methods.

The nature of this event was extremely bad. Two faceless men assassinated the king at his wedding, killing the king's original maids and guards, Ani and Butch. Two other distinguished guests who attended the king's wedding banquet also met with disasters - one was a merchant noble from Pentos, and the other was a noblewoman from Stormland. In addition, several important female guests were stabbed with poison needles - they were fortunately rescued by the maester, Fremi and the Red Viper.

Considering the Faceless Men's rampant behavior, Viserys must fight back.

Viserys himself was not afraid, but Daenerys was not like Viserys who could ignore these strange assassins. If she got into trouble because of condoning the Faceless Men assassins, Viserys would never accept it. So after confirming the friendly attitude of the Three-Eyed Raven, Viserys turned his attention directly to the House of Black and White in Braavos, the far north of Essos.

On the second day after the assassination, Viserys only dealt with the guests hastily and handed the matter over to Prime Minister Oberyn. He announced the severity of the assassination and declared that the assassin would face his wrath. After that, he set out from Dragonstone, flew across the narrow sea to the continent of Essos, and headed north along the coastline from high altitude to the House of Black and White, the headquarters of the Faceless Men in Braavos.

At the same time, Queen Daenerys flew to the depths of Dragon Mountain with Nightflight and announced that she would begin training dragons and become the king's helper.

So all the aftermath of Dragonstone was entrusted to the Prime Minister. Viserys ordered his Prime Minister to prepare for the defense of Dragonstone and let the guests wait for his return on Dragonstone.

Viserys declared that he would hold the Faceless Men accountable for the assassination at the wedding.

When the assassin continued to open the temple so high-profile and rampantly, and the assassination failed once but happened again and again, Viserys felt it was really outrageous.

Back to the present.

Viserys did not immediately become the largest dragon. He only grew to a certain size, then he lay prone, allowing Daenerys to climb onto his back easily, placing the puppet in the depression formed by the protruding bone spurs on the dragon's back, and then wrapping it several times with the flexible leather used to tie the saddle, tightly tying it to the protruding bone spurs on the dragon's back to ensure it was secure.

After Viserys shook his body to make sure the puppet would not fall, he sat up straight and prepared to take off.

Daenerys was already very skilled. She picked up the empty packages and changed clothes on the ground and put them aside. Then she found a sheltered place on the slope, sat down, and stuck her head out to watch.

Viserys glanced at Daenerys and nodded at her, then grabbed the two stiff bodies of the Faceless Assassins with one claw, turned his head south, and took off from the back slope of the ridge.

Daenerys watched Viserys fly high into the sky from the high slope until he disappeared into the misty clouds. She knew that Viserys was going to fly high into the sky and hide in the clouds before turning north and attacking the temple in the most shocking way.

When Viserys appeared in Daenerys's sight again, he had turned into a gigantic beast with a wingspan that covered the sky. His huge body was emerging from the clouds in the sky. He flapped his wings, carrying with him the overwhelming clouds and sea mist, and headed straight for the Black and White House with a pointed black-tiled roof on the Isle of the Gods of Braavos.

Braavos
In the Middle Ages, armor was usually worn by extremely wealthy knights or knights born for war, who could afford to wear a coat of mail lining with a layer of steel armor on the outside.

The two examples above are both Joan of Arc.

The flight distance from Dragonstone to Braavos is about the same as that from New York to Finland or Sweden. In reality, it takes 8-9 hours to fly by plane. Viserys is not as fast as a Boeing plane, so it takes more than two days to arrive.
