Chapter 241 Unexpected Accident During Engine Repair

Yu Dawei and Xiao Agui began disassembling the Jiefang engine. Since a tripod would be needed to lift the engine out later, the two of them simply removed the engine cover and began disassembling the various connection points of the engine.

Before disassembling, the engine oil needs to be drained, and the diesel fuel is extracted little by little from the fuel tank using an oil extractor.

Yu Dawei didn't need to explain these things; Xiao Agui knew exactly what to do, just like a seasoned master chef.

The engine is like the heart of the human body, located at the very core. All other "organs" connected to it are related to the engine, such as the water tank, generator, starter motor, air compressor, gearbox, and flywheel housing, etc.

The two of them spent the entire afternoon trying to take these things apart, but they still couldn't finish.

It was getting dark, and Lao Ji went back inside to cook something for everyone. He was quick to fix things on his end; he had repaired two cars today. One had a broken air filter and the other had a broken keyhole. Both of these things were easy to repair, but it took some effort to buy some parts from the auto parts store in town.

However, with Yu Dawei's car, the round trip didn't take too long. The second car was a minivan, which had a problem with the gears. After a while, it would occasionally slip out of gear when shifting from second to third, which was quite troublesome. But it wasn't too bad for Lao Ji, an experienced mechanic.

Later, they even had time to help Fuzi deal with a Xiali sedan.

When Yu Dawei heard Xiao Agui's stomach growling, he decided to stop for a while. There was no rush to disassemble the engine. He would eat first, pack up his tools, and continue the repairs tomorrow.

The repairs continued the next day, and the group had different opinions on how to safely lift the engine down using a tripod.

Lao Ji suggested that we find a crane or use the excavator from our factory to lift it up. Anyway, even if we use a crane, it's not our money, so we can avoid any accidents.

Yao Jinfu had also been repairing cars for a while and had his own ideas about some repair matters, so he said, "No, no, I think it's better to use a tripod to hang it up."

“Our tripod wheels are bigger than those of other repair shops, and the dirt road outside is very smooth, so we can push it in directly. Many parts can be lifted and disassembled, which will be more efficient,” Axe added.

Old Ji couldn't refute this, because what Axe said was right; he just had an extra layer of security to consider.

After all, there is only one boss, and he has to think about the boss's safety to some extent. Theoretically speaking, Yu Dawei doesn't need to do the engine disassembly at all. If there weren't several cars to be repaired in the factory, several people wouldn't be so busy.

“Both options make sense. We can use a crane to lift it into the yard first, and then use a tripod to lift it up when we’re disassembling the oil pan and the parts underneath.” After considering it in his mind, Yu Dawei finally decided to choose both options.

He knows best the tripod he welded himself. The wheels are bigger than those of other tripods, but it's harder to control the speed, and there's a slight steep slope from the doorway to the outside.

If the engine is moved and the tripod is overturned due to an angle shift, that would be a disaster.

The cost of hiring a crane for repairs is usually borne by the client, i.e., the person whose vehicle needs repairing it. Yu Dawei is not one to take advantage of others; he will never hesitate to help save money if he can.

In situations like this, if the factory has an excavator, they can use the excavator instead of a crane to lift the engine out of the chassis.

After discussion, the group decided to use the old Hitachi engine to lift it up and move it to the yard.

Things went smoothly afterwards. After Yu Dawei and Xiao Agui removed all the connection points of the engine, they called Lao Ji and Yao Jinfu for help and started to tie the engine to a fixed position with steel wire rope.

The task of hoisting the engine was assigned to Yao Jinfu, since he was an excavator operator and would definitely be able to do this kind of thing more easily than Yu Dawei.

The engine of a truck is actually no smaller than the engine of an excavator or forklift, so Yu Dawei used steel wire rope.

After getting it out, Yu Dawei quickly shouted to the two people next to him to get away. This thing must weigh at least a thousand pounds. If someone underneath wasn't careful and the engine fell down, they would definitely die.

Fortunately, Axe was very skilled. The excavator was driven from outside the gate into the yard, and the engine remained in the air without shaking. Finally, it was safely placed on the wooden block.

Now the first step of disassembly is finally complete. The rest becomes much simpler.

Start by removing the exhaust pipe and valve cover.

Lao Ji and Yao Jinfu both had work to do, so they went off to get busy. Yu Dawei, on the other hand, started disassembling the engine with Xiao Agui.

This was probably Xiao Agui's first time disassembling a Jiefang truck engine, so he wasn't very fast. Sometimes he would reach out and pat his master's arm, asking if he could disassemble this part first.

Only after receiving Yu Dawei's approval did he begin to disassemble it quickly.

They dismantled the machine from day to night, taking a short break around noon. The afternoon arrived quickly. By then, the Jiefang engine was almost completely dismantled.

Yu Dawei's original idea was to disassemble the engine in sequence while guiding Xiao Agui through the problems encountered during the disassembly process.

But Xiao A-Gui might really be a genius at car repair. When disassembling cars, he didn't make many of the mistakes that he had made before.

Perhaps it's a matter of analogy; after all, while engines may vary in size, their internal structures are largely the same.

By the time the sun was about to set, the two men had completely disassembled the exterior of the engine block. All that was left was the oil pan, and then the pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, and so on inside...

When disassembling the oil pan, Yu Dawei used a tripod, found two screws to fix it to the upper part of the engine block, then tied it with a steel cable, pulled the tripod over, lowered the chain hoist, hooked the steel cable and started to lift it up.

The engine stopped when the oil level was about a person's height above the ground. The five-ton chain hoist handled it like a child's play, so Yu Dawei didn't need to worry too much about any accidents.

He grabbed the wrench and was about to bend down under the engine to remove the oil pan screw when Xiao Agui scurried under the engine and even smiled at Yu Dawei.

Logically speaking, the oil pan screw could be removed when the engine is inside the chassis. However, Yu Dawei was worried that Xiao Agui might not know the danger and might accidentally hit him if the oil pan wasn't removed properly, so he planned to remove it himself while the car was being lifted up with a tripod.

As it turned out, the kid still crawled in and started removing the oil pan. Yu Dawei, somewhat speechless, reminded him, "Be careful."

He then gripped one end of the chain firmly with both hands to prevent any accidents.

Just then, Lao Ji and Fu Zi finished their work for the day and walked towards Yu Dawei, chatting and laughing.

"You've come at the right time. Hold onto the engine for Ah Gui, otherwise it'll keep wobbling when you remove the oil pan," Yu Dawei said.

The boss's words were like a royal decree, so Lao Ji quickly ran over, grabbed both ends of the engine with his hands, and Fu Zi also walked over quickly, stood opposite Lao Ji, and pressed down on the engine.

With the three burly men from Northeast China helping to stabilize the engine, Xiao Agui disassembling the oil pan was a piece of cake. After removing the last few screws, everyone lifted the oil pan off the ground, and the engine's minor issues were resolved.

However, while Lao Ji and Fu Zi were joking around, and Yu Dawei was thinking about what to eat for dinner, an accident happened.

First, the top gear of the chain hoist and the sprocket start moving, making a "click-click-click" sound at the same time!

In an instant, the suspended engine suddenly began to sink rapidly as if in free fall!
At the same time, the chain in Yu Dawei's hand slid rapidly!
At that moment, the hearts of the three grown men almost stopped for a second. Yu Dawei was the first to react. Ignoring the pain in his hands, he desperately grabbed the chain hoist.

"not good!"

Old Ji and Axe realized that there was someone under the engine! The two of them grabbed the chain hoist in Yu Dawei's hand at the same time, as it was the only thing that could stop the falling engine.

Even if you take apart the engine and disassemble it into small pieces, it will still weigh seven or eight hundred pounds. It's not something that Yao Jinfu and Lao Ji can lift by themselves. Only by grabbing the chain hoist can they grasp Xiao Agui's chance of survival!
"Click-click-click!" The top of the chain hoist made the sound of gears turning and rubbing again, and then the engine "whooshed" and bounced on the main chain due to inertia.

Only then did the group realize that the chain had jammed again, and the engine had stopped sinking. Seeing that the three of them dared not let go, they realized that the chain had jammed again.

"A-Gui! Come out quickly!" Yu Dawei almost shouted.

"Ah!" Under the engine, A-Gui shouted to Yu Dawei, and then the ratchet sound came from the oil pan.

"Ah Gui!" Yu Dawei suddenly felt a surge of anger. He was almost smashed to death, and he was still dismantling it!
"Brothers, you guys hold on, I'll take a look." Yao Jinfu said. At this moment, the engine was only half a meter high, and the three of them were still in a blind spot. The only thing they could see was the back of the engine. The oil pan was completely open, like a giant mouth with its mouth wide open.

"Don't let go! What if the engine sinks further? Hold on tight!" Yu Dawei was most afraid that the chain hoist would malfunction and continue to drop. He was currently struggling to hold on, which meant that the gears above the chain hoist were not working properly at all!

"Come out!" Yu Dawei roared.

But all that could be heard from below was the increasingly loud ratchet sound, and finally, with a "bang," the oil pan completely detached from the engine.

Immediately afterwards, the three saw a thin figure carrying a heavy oil pan on his back and holding onto both sides, walking out from under the engine step by step, each step very difficult.
