Chapter 21 Saving the Big White Family

"Honey, I want to talk to you about something." Yu Dawei squatted down next to the stove and raised his face.

"You said."

"Our Da Bai's baby is probably due soon. I'm thinking of tidying up the old house next door so it can give birth there before the New Year, and then we can take it out when it gets warmer." Yu Dawei got up and sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), reaching out to stroke Han Jingfan's bulging belly.

After repairing the hole in the house, Yu Dawei opened the sealed window in the west room. The window was an old-fashioned square window that opened vertically, without glass, and covered with plastic sheeting.

After opening the window, Yu Dawei placed one end of a tree branch at the small corner where the window opens and closes, and the other end against the edge of the open window, leaving a 45-degree angle space.

A person can get through, but a dog has to step on something under the window to jump in.

Yu Dawei looked around (author's note: looking around means looking in all directions), and saw a stone for pickling sauerkraut at the base of the garden wall, and also a dilapidated chair.

Yu Dawei took a few steps back, looked at the height of the window from the ground, as well as the height of the stone and the chair, and finally chose the old mahogany chair.

Big White stood under the window, circling its owner, somewhat bewildered by its owner's bizarre actions.

It even destroyed its own bed; where will it sleep now?

"Awoo." Thinking of this, it lowered its head and its voice was somewhat sad.

"Come on, let's see your new home." Yu Dawei reached out and patted Da Bai's head before stepping inside. The dog's hay was placed at the other end of the kang (a heated brick bed) under the window. The owner is so good to it; knowing it's cold outside, they brought it inside to live.

It's so warm here, perfect for giving birth.

Thinking about it, Da Bai walked to the haystack by himself, lay down on it, closed his eyes and began to doze off. Perhaps it was too warm compared to outside, because he fell asleep after a while.

When Yu Dawei came out, he found that the chair had fallen to the ground. After thinking for a moment, he went to the backyard and nailed four nails between the four legs and the seat of the chair.

Now the chair is completely stable.

Five days later, on a snowy night, Yu Dawei stayed by Da Bai's side, watching it tremble as it huddled in a pile of grass, struggling to give birth, until the first, second, third, and fourth cubs were born one after another.

Seeing the birth of a new life, he seemed to feel something at that moment, but he couldn't express it. It must have been a feeling of instinctive awe for life.

If his wife were here, she might be able to think of a word, but she's heavily pregnant and it's inconvenient for her to climb in through the window. He brings Da Bai his leftovers every day.
