Chapter 114-113: Official Promotion
"Fuck you!"
Si Sheng let out a whimper as he was kicked in the abdomen, flying three meters backward before rolling to the ground. If he had the torso from the hunting grounds, he could have easily escaped, but that torso was worth more than ten of him, and now he couldn't even dodge a kick coming straight at him.
He struggled to open his eyes, and a dozen or so people walked towards him from the direction of the bar and record store.
More than a dozen figures emerged from the other side of the street.
Socrates has not yet appeared.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted from the crowd. Yisheng sensed a strong electromagnetic pulse, and his prosthetic body temporarily malfunctioned. The crowd suddenly began to run, and Yisheng saw a white figure emerge from the darkness—white jacket, short white hair.
White ghost!
"Those lackeys from Lugu!" someone shouted.
"Beat them! Tear them all down!"
The white ghost swung his metal rod and knocked away an arm. The arm crackled with blue electricity and rolled down in front of Si Sheng. It was the same hand that had just taken Si Sheng's medicine.
Just as White Ghost swung his club, a crowbar slashed out from the darkness, its tip firmly embedded in his shoulder. White Ghost roared and swung his club backhand, crushing the attacker's head.
Sisheng was somewhat dazed. The white ghost's scarred face looked exceptionally ferocious under the neon lights, its pink pupils gleaming with a murderous light. Just two days ago, that same fierce gaze had been searching for prey in the hunting grounds. And now? This albino was fighting desperately with the people from Wildfire, and the blood spurting from his shoulder reminded Sisheng of the bloody performances in the hunting grounds.
It turns out he was never a hunter.
Si Sheng suddenly realized that Bai Gui, like himself, was a pawn.
Who is the real hunter, the one who holds the chessboard?
Si Sheng opened his eyes wide and looked towards the overpass not far away. Mr. Su was gone.
Only the neon lights still float among the skyscrapers, and the eyes in the clouds and the moonlight look down upon the world together.
In a secluded street corner unnoticed, a faint red light appeared. Su Ge's gaze pierced through the darkness, surveying the carnage outside the hospital.
The prosthetic coating reflected the light, and blood and coolant splattered and fell in the dim light.
The sounds of clashing weapons, explosions, screams, screams, and fleeing footsteps filled the air.
The white ghost wiped the blood from his face.
He was badly injured, but the high concentration of adrenaline made him feel no pain at all. He held the metal rod and tapped the head of an unconscious cyborg, making a clanging sound, before looking away in boredom.
"Hey, get to it over there! We're not picking up the junk, but unload all the valuables! I'll buy them back at a high price!"
White Ghost urged his men to clean up the battlefield. The thugs took out their tools and began to "unload" the bodies, removing prosthetics from the fallen people, whether it was arms, legs, or eyes, they didn't care.
"Keep your hands off, don't let anyone die," White Ghost added, stopping the group from dismantling the enemy's life support system.
A buzzing sound came from high above, and the hovercar flew in, its outer shell decorated with a totem of a bird's head and a deer's body drawn in silver lines.
The thugs panicked, some turning tail and running away. The white ghost hesitated for a moment, then roared:
"Why run!"
He took the lead and squatted down with his hands on his head.
In just over ten seconds, the Security Bureau's drone landed on the side of the street. As the lights illuminated the surroundings, a holographic cordon marked a restricted area, and combat robots and investigators filed out.
Yang Guan stepped out of the hovercar and surveyed the street in front of him. The gang fight had ended, and several modified humans were lying on the ground, their cybernetic bodies mostly dismantled.
Street brawls like this were nothing new to Yang Guan, but this time was a bit unusual. Generally, criminals would scatter like birds upon seeing Fei Lian. They all knew the Security Bureau's attitude towards such brawls: as long as it didn't cause significant social impact, investigators wouldn't relentlessly pursue fleeing criminals after dispersing the riot. But now, none of these guys had run away; they were all squatting on the street like quails, heads in their hands.
Too honest.
The combat robots quickly took control of all the gang members, at which point the investigators approached them.
"I didn't do anything wrong!" Bai Gui was pinned to the ground, his face pressed against the reflective, damp surface. "What's going on?" Bai Miao looked down at Bai Gui.
“We’re doing charity, doing charity,” Bai Gui said with a fawning smile. “I work for the Deer Valley Group, fighting against organized crime.” He strained his neck to look across the street.
"Lugu Group?"
Yang Guan frowned and followed Bai Gui's gaze, where a familiar figure appeared.
"What a coincidence, Investigator Yang."
The streetlights illuminated his face in the darkness. Su Ge smiled at Yang Guan and threw the filter into the chipped trash can.
……
Security Bureau.
"Tell me, what's going on?"
Bai Miao peered at Su Ge on the maglev chair across the table.
“How did our city hero end up with a bunch of smugglers and even instigate street brawls? And you’re still using the Lugu Group’s name to swindle and deceive people. The Yingchuan Zong Council just awarded you the Tianxia Ji Medal; you should be more mindful of your image.”
“The Security Bureau’s information isn’t very reliable.” Su Ge fiddled with the medicine box in his hand and looked at Yang Guan next to Bai Miao. “Didn’t the Lugu Group want me to be their spokesperson? I agreed, but I haven’t had a chance to tell you yet.”
"When?" Yang Guan asked.
"Three days ago."
"Didn't you refuse before?"
"I've figured it out now."
"Ok."
Yang Guan sized up Su Ge. This hibernator had changed a lot. A few months ago, when he first arrived at the Security Bureau, he was thin and weak, and a bit neurotic. But now his body looked like he had fully recovered. His skin was rosy, his hair was black, and his eyes showed a calm and composed demeanor.
Yang Guan hesitated for a moment, then said:
"That's good. It's also an opportunity. By cooperating with the Deer Valley Group, you should be able to earn the money for brain-computer interface surgery very quickly, and you won't have to rely on the meager stipend from informants to make a living anymore."
"What?" Su Ge stopped playing with the medicine box. "You're not planning to continue investigating the Spirit Society?"
"There's a new direction for the investigation..."
“You made me impersonate someone from the Deer Valley Group, and you also got me involved with the Spiritual Society. I did both. Now that I’ve become the real deal, you’re telling me you’re not going to investigate anymore.” Su Ge smiled at Yang Guan. “Is this how the Security Bureau operates?”
“You only have a temporary contract, you’re not qualified to tell the Security Bureau what to do.” Bai Miao’s face turned cold. “Let me be blunt, the investigation originally had nothing to do with you, it was Yang Guan who thought you needed a stipend, so he applied for a contract for you.”
"Thanks." Su Ge looked at Yang Guan, this investigator always made him feel a long-lost sense of human warmth.
"You did a much better job than I expected."
Yang Guan let out a long sigh of relief.
"But I actually regretted it later. The unexpected situations you encountered were very dangerous. If I had been unlucky, I might have killed you. No one can always be lucky."
He paused and added:
"Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to dismiss you by saying 'luck'. You have better options now, that's why I'm telling you this."
