Chapter 197 Tacit understanding
The next day.
Chengnan Law Enforcement Office – Basement Morgue.
"You two had better give me an explanation. I asked you to investigate, and I didn't ask you to make this place overcrowded."
Rebecca stood in the hallway with her hands on her hips and a grim expression.
The two morgues behind her were filled with corpses on all the stretchers, and the lab team members were huddled together in one of the morgues, their faces full of worry, cleaning up the bodies.
Meanwhile, old Theon and Milo stood obediently on the other side of the corridor.
"I didn't kill the person."
Milo was perfectly justified.
After leaving St. George's Hospital last night, he went straight to Dr. Holloway's house, number 096.
But he was still one step late.
By the time Milo arrived, the doctor was already dead.
He had no obvious external injuries, and there were no traces of anyone else at the scene.
Holloway's body was lying a few meters from the entrance to his house.
As it turned out, Milo's investigation was on the right track. The perpetrator of the hanging corpse at the dock must have obtained the medical records from St. George's Hospital, thus identifying Aya Ferguson as the victim of the sacrificial ritual, while Holloway was most likely a pitiful wretch who was used and then silenced.
“I was the one who killed them.”
Old Theon was also quite self-righteous.
"These people are fugitives from the north. Each of them has at least three to five lives on their hands. They are engaged in smuggling and illegal immigration in the southeastern sea area. They deserve to die."
However, he didn't act arrogantly and calmly recounted all the actions he had taken.
Finally, he added:
“Milo told me that the Tata gang might be related to Aya Ferguson’s death, so I went to check it out.”
“I didn’t ask you to kill them all,” Milo shook his head.
"That information was indeed given by you, wasn't it?" Old Theon shrugged.
"That information is indeed correct."
Old Theon exhaled a puff of thick smoke:
"Well, there's nothing we can do. They refused to cooperate with the investigation calmly, so..."
As Rebecca listened to the two criminal investigation officers under her command chatting idly, the lines on her face grew increasingly dark.
"So the victims of the hanging corpse case are connected to the Tata gang?!"
“Hmm… As far as I know, no.” Old Theon shook his head. “They came to Nanwei City just to make a quick buck. Yes, that’s right.”
Rebecca's blood pressure was soaring.
She raised her index finger, hesitated for a long time, unable to say anything, and finally asked fiercely:
"Can I really count on you two to solve the case? Including the killer incident last time, the negative public opinion pressure our law enforcement agency is facing is immense. If we still can't handle this, you two will both be invited to 'coffee' by the supervisory committee along with me."
“My trail has gone cold,” old Theon replied.
“I do have a lead,” Milo nodded.
"Then get to work!"
"Okay."
...Rebecca stormed off in a huff.
The police station was eerily silent; no one dared to provoke this woman.
Milo and old Theon exchanged glances, the latter muttering under his breath, "She seems a bit overwhelmed."
Seeing that Milo didn't respond, old Theon added, "But sitting in her position does mean facing more trouble. The case is troublesome enough, but she also has to deal with the higher-ups, the Oversight Council, and the public opinion."
Milo wasn't unwilling to engage, but he needed to wait until Rebecca was far away before daring to say that.
“Nero is right, Rebecca is indeed not the best candidate to be the chief of law enforcement.”
But there was nothing she could do; the person most suited for the position died young, so Rebecca had to shoulder all the mess.
However, it's fine to mention gossip about leaders occasionally, and neither Milo nor Theon intended to continue the discussion on this topic.
The two turned and walked into the morgue.
The air was thick with the pungent smell of blood. The dead members of the Tata Gang bore gruesome knife wounds, each one aimed straight for a vital organ.
As a law enforcement officer, these methods were somewhat excessively brutal.
However, Milo did not comment on this, he just grinned.
But old Theon seemed to see through Milo's thoughts with ease. He grinned and said, "If you're still on the front lines of law enforcement when you're my age, you'll probably be no better off than me."
“The environment is to blame,” Milo shrugged, offering no rebuttal.
“You know, our era is relatively better. The most ruthless people in the past were the soldiers who survived the wars.” Old Theon took a puff of his cigarette, pursed his lips, and blew smoke toward the ceiling before speaking leisurely:
"No matter what they looked like at first, they all became the same after returning from the battlefield. My old man was like that. He was a whole head shorter than me, but guess what? Until he breathed his last, I still didn't think I could take him down. True ferocity is etched into the bones, so don't look at me with that contemptuous gaze."
“That’s a very thoughtful thing to say.” Milo shrugged. “So, the Solomon gang is full of the kind of people you’re talking about, the kind who survived the battlefield.”
"Whatever you think."
Old Theon then changed the subject:
"So, let's talk about your clues. Now that the unfortunate Holloway has been sent away, perhaps we should focus on investigating his recent activities? But actually, I think he's obviously not an important figure. Usually, these kinds of cover-ups are done very meticulously. Even if we spend a lot of time, we might not be able to find any clues from him."
“That’s what I mean too. Considering our limited manpower, I’ll continue this investigation. As for you, why don’t you check the recent ship entry and exit records at Confession Dock as we agreed before?” Milo completely understood what Old Theon meant.
The old guy never wanted to team up with him; he just wanted to work alone.
Perhaps he didn't think Milo would accept his methods of handling cases.
“That’s good. At least it proves we still have some understanding.” Old Theon was very satisfied with Milo’s suggestion, and then added:
"I will continue to investigate the Great Library incident. If you have any leads, please let me know immediately."
Milo glanced instinctively at the other seven shadows in the morgue, then nodded to old Theon:
"I will."
I actually sighed inwardly.
He knew that old Theon would never let this go.
That funeral was just a smokescreen to fool the higher-ups and the public; for Theon, the truth was still a long way off.
Unfortunately, Milo had no way of telling him the truth.
Even if he wanted to say it.
