Chapter 36 Conservative Diehards
Chapter 36 Conservative Diehards
On the weekend morning, the Carters went out together to repair the fence in the yard.
Mrs. Wood, who lived across the street, came over from a distance with a cart, stopped in front of the door, and said, "Last night, I saw Scott being picked up by a car."
Elena smiled and said, "That's right, he won't come to disturb us."
Mrs. Wood was a nice person and reminded me, "You can't live without him."
Elena nodded, "He'll be fine."
Mrs. Wood pushed the cart and walked slowly diagonally across the street.
Martin came out of the house carrying a toolbox, looked at the slightly worn wood in front of him, and began to give instructions: "Hall, take your shovel and dig the hole. Harris, find a ruler to measure the height. Lily, help me."
He found a hand saw and started sawing wood.
Suddenly someone blocked the sun.
Martin looked up and saw it was Lily: "Idiot, what are you doing?"
Lily stretched out her hand: "You are as stupid as a pig. Give me the saw quickly."
Martin remembered that Elena had mentioned that Lily was the best at handwork in the Carter family, so he handed the hand saw over and asked, "Can you do it?"
Lily sawed the wood skillfully, and her mouth was not idle: "I can make it exactly like you!"
Martin didn't tell her to shut up. Instead, he said, "I have a handicraft to do." Then he thought of Lily's age and said, "Forget it. You're not suitable."
Lily raised her voice: "Look how I saw this piece of wood into your shape!"
"You better not be bragging, idiot." Martin decided to find a companion for James: "If you can't do it, I will dig a hole in the backyard and bury you."
Lily blinked her eyes: "And listen to you and Elena every night?"
With a whoosh, the broken rope thrown by Elena hit Lily's head.
Lily quickly shut up and went back to her manual work.
Martin took a shovel and helped Hall dig the hole.
It’s as if the body has muscle memory and I do it very skillfully.
Digging a hole and burying someone seems easy.
After working for most of the morning, a wooden fence was erected in the missing part of the yard's barbed wire.
All the wood has strange shapes and stands upright on the earthen bed, as if facing the earth.
Lily Carter's masterpiece.
Martin and Elena tied them up again with ropes and connected them to the barbed wire. Although it was not very beautiful, it was functional.
The main thing is not to be afraid of thieves.
Scott should not be interested in the worthless piece of wood.
Martin washed his hands, drove out, and said, "Idiots, lunch is on me."
Elena and her three companions got in the car, and Martin drove to a nearby fried chicken and hamburger restaurant. The average price per person was five or six dollars, which was enough to make the two idiots, Lily and Hall, so full that their eyes rolled back and they vomited.
After dinner, Harris bought some old magazines from a nearby bookstore.
Back at Carter's house, Martin sat on the sofa, picked up a magazine, and said to Elena, "Calculate the rent."
Then he turned and pointed at Lily: "Idiot, shut up!"
Lily's words got stuck in her throat, and she started coughing. She tried to defend herself, "I didn't say anything."
Elena went to find the account book.
Martin was flipping through a magazine and picked up something that turned out to be an astronomy magazine. The page he turned to was introducing a recently discovered star.
It seems that many new stars are discovered every year? Martin picked up the magazine and shook it at Harris: "Have you studied astronomy?"
Harris was reading a book seriously, without even looking up: "Forgot? I'm a member of the astronomy club. Don't ask me to introduce you to the stars, I'm in a public middle school."
Elena came out of the bedroom with a notebook and said as she flipped through it, "I don't know how Emma negotiated with Jack, but the rent for half a year is $1000."
Martin thought it must be what they talked about in bed, and said, "I'll transfer it to you on Monday."
Just like Fack, Elena never treated Martin politely and immediately glared at him: "Idiot, do you want to learn from that bastard Jack to default on your debt? This is until the end of March, and it's almost June!"
Lily finally seized the opportunity: "Because if he defaults on his debt, he will feel better when he does something stupid."
The astronomy magazine was thrown out and hit Lily in the face. Martin said simply: "I'll give you $2000."
Elena was very generous: "I don't want the interest."
"I have a meeting with a friend this afternoon, you guys continue." Martin got up and went out.
Elena picked up the clothes basket and followed Martin to the next door to pack up Martin's changed clothes.
The washing machine here was sold many years ago, and Martin takes all his dirty clothes to Elena's place to be washed.
Martin was used to it, so without saying anything, he got in his car and drove to downtown Atlanta and came to the coffee shop where he had been last time.
Buckley, a reporter from the Atlanta Star, was already waiting here. When he saw Martin, he said, "I got some information."
Martin took out the $200 he had prepared and pushed it to Buckley: "This is yours."
Last time, Martin asked Monica's freelance journalist friend what the market price was for asking reporters for information and buying materials.
Buckley put away the money and said, "In a few days, a director of the Atlanta Methodist Association, a man named Milton, will attend a large-scale skills training press conference. He is the most hardline conservative opinion leader of the Methodist Association."
He opened the bag, took out the collected information, and handed it to Martin: "The speech that triggered the protest of the Freedom Society - the view that women are just family subordinates and must follow the will of the family - was publicly published by him."
Martin quickly scanned the text and asked, "Has this person made even tougher remarks in the past?"
Buckley nodded. "Yes, he is a die-hard conservative."
Martin went to look at Milton's information. What Barkley provided was naturally not a secret, and most of it could be found by reporters.
One of the passages caught Martin's attention. Of Milton's three marriages, two failed because the woman cheated on him. When the woman filed for divorce, she accepted an interview with the media and said that Milton was useless.
Martin thought for a while and said, "Barkley, my friend, I may need your help in a few days."
Barkley looked at the money, then at Martin's well-dressed clothes, and said without any hesitation: "We are friends, I must help you with this. If you need me anytime, give me a call. I'll be there anytime."
Martin made a phone call gesture: "Wait for my call."
Buckley took the money given by the civilized people and left the cafe in a happy mood.
I'm just writing stories for tabloids, it's for making money, it's not shameful.
Martin came to the club and went to Vincent's office. "Boss, I have carefully read various newspapers in Atlanta these days. The media no longer mentions the name of the Beast House, which is not conducive to further expanding the club's popularity."
Vincent gained practical benefits from his fame and was very concerned about it. He said, "We can't really sue the Methodist Church. Civil litigation takes a long time and costs a lot of money. It's not worth it."
At the last press conference, Martin’s accusations were so loud that he actually sent a lawyer’s letter.
Martin said, "Boss, it was the Methodist Association that took the initiative to cause trouble for us last time. Why can't we take the initiative to cause trouble for them? Let's go to the bastards of the Methodist Association to protest, and then call the media reporters."
"Let the media hype it up again?" Vincent thought it was possible: "Are you sure?"
Martin added: "I saved Kelly Gray, the director of the Freedom Society last time. Ms. Gray hired me as a part-time social investigator for the Freedom Society. We can use the name of the Freedom Society."
Vincent thought of Martin's key role in the club's explosion, and agreed: "Sure, the personnel expenses will be calculated as hourly wages."
Martin thought to himself that people who come to him on their own initiative are really worthless.
