Chapter 533 Trivia in Life
Chapter 533 Trivia in Life
"What do you think they'll talk about when they get together? It won't be like what we just did, will it?"
Alice suddenly became worried, then mimicked a man's gruff voice and asked, "'Brother, what do you think of my daughter?' 'She's a lovely little lady, though her lips are a bit thick.'"
“I should ask her to shave before she comes out in public.” Even the usually serious Lant repeated Donna’s words with feigned composure, though a smile was already overflowing in her eyes.
Donna's expression became somewhat out of control; she bit her lip, trying hard not to laugh out loud.
If she couldn't hold back her laughter here, it would spread everywhere like a flood breaking through a dam.
“Well, it was just a joke. I think men will probably talk about work when they meet for the first time.” Miss Lant coughed twice. “A career is a man’s jewel, everyone says so.”
They discussed the topic, and to Donna's surprise, they all thought Clayton's profession was the most interesting.
“He must see all sorts of strange and wonderful things every day, and each one comes with a unique little story,” Miss Alice said.
"But aren't the things university professors research also quite unique?" Donna asked, puzzled by her envy.
If Clayton had the choice, he would definitely want to be a university professor.
“My dad’s major is ‘Animal Behavior’. Although I also love animals, I can’t stand that he’s always hanging out with them. Ugh, that strong smell of fur is hard to get rid of even after a shower. It takes a week to get rid of it after leaving the work environment. I never thought there would be other people in this profession.”
“I understand.” Miss Lant nodded in agreement. “I’ve been to his car dealership. The animal smell was so strong that I would sneeze just standing at the door.”
Hearing their complaints, Donna was somewhat relieved that Clayton usually took care to cover up his own scent, burning incense in the house and wearing perfume.
Otherwise, she would be covered in the smell of fur by now.
“Sigh—” Lant’s expression suddenly darkened, and he sighed.
This reaction made Donna nervous.
"what happened?"
“My father has been acting strangely lately. Even though his job doesn’t require him to go out often, he’s been leaving home frequently and only comes back to rest at night. He doesn’t even have time to talk to us. If I hadn’t gotten sick this time, he probably wouldn’t have come back until tonight.”
Fortunately, she was unaware of her father's debts.
Donna tentatively asked Alice, whose parents had also come on a whim.
It seems Miss Lant was right. If Mr. Ashley hadn't insisted on coming, he would have preferred to handle everything outside.
My father was a man of strong will throughout his life.
Donna played with her friends for a while, using magic without restraint, pouring different colored inks onto drawing paper and then commanding them to flow and paint, or opening the window to summon birds down for her friends to pet and feed.
Despite Clayton's assertion that these extraordinary abilities should be kept hidden, every girl in the school was discussing magic. They tried drawing magic circles to keep the air fresh, placing apple cores under their pillows to dream of their future prince charming, and concocting strange potions to maintain their skin. Secretly circulating occult-related newspapers and magazines was commonplace. No one thought having magic was strange, and some girls were even regarded as magic masters. It was in this atmosphere that Donna gradually broke the taboo and showed her true abilities.
However, she remained cautious; apart from Lant and Alice, no one else at the school knew she was a witch.
"If Father knew you could use magic, he would forget the priest's sermons and treat you as an honored guest."
Miss Lant's unintentional remark touched Donna, and she began to carve out a new shape for her future in her heart.
Once their guardians finished their business and began calling for their daughters, the three friends dispersed to say goodbye.
Donna and Clayton rode home together. The evening breeze at the end of February had lost its chill, and they could comfortably chat while enjoying the breeze.
The girl sat sideways on the saddle, her relaxed body rising and falling with the horse's back. Since she had magic, she didn't need to watch the road much while riding; she could simply let the horse follow Clayton on its own.
"What kind of people are Mr. Kerry, Mr. Melcher, and Mr. Ashley?"
“Mr. Melcher,” Clayton said thoughtfully, still savoring the conversation: “Very knowledgeable, a naturalist. And he even knows Sir Jonard, that old man never associates with mediocre people.”
Donna tilted her head, asking curiously, "Are they from the Elders Council again?"
"No, he only accepted Sir Jonard's funding. I only just learned that the Sir has been generously supporting these scholars. Both local universities have teaching buildings and experimental equipment donated by the Sir."
As for Mr. Yasser
When Mr. Yashir was mentioned, Clayton suddenly looked troubled.
“I don’t mean to say he’s an indecisive person, but I sincerely hope that I’m the last person to talk to him.”
"I guess that's what he means by being indecisive," Donna concluded.
“That’s not entirely true,” Clayton said, expressing his desire to salvage Mr. Ashir’s dignity, but realizing that success seemed too difficult, he dropped the subject after saying only half a sentence. “The Earth Mother Cult has been proselytizing everywhere lately, so be careful with you and your friends when you get back to school.”
Donna responded, then asked in confusion, "Was this also part of your conversation?"
Clayton nodded: "Mr. Ashir has caught their eye. They sold him a piece of information that there is an oracle cave in that abandoned mine outside the city. This is most likely a hoax, a fabricated legend created by the Earth Mother Cult to attract investment. Only a good person like Mr. Ashir, who is particularly good at listening to others' opinions, would believe them."
Donna rolled her eyes where he couldn't see her: "Kerry, you don't have to beat around the bush. Calling Mr. Yashir directly won't hurt my friendship with his daughter."
“Fine, Mr. Ashir is an idiot,” Clayton said bluntly. “But I still have to investigate this Oracle Cave myself to see what’s going on.”
"Why? Is your adventurous spirit stirring again?"
"Of course not, but this matter is closely related to me."
Clayton straddled the horse with a light and graceful gait, making the horse appear small in comparison, but his superb riding skills mitigated some of the oddity.
"At the end of March, there will be a grand horse racing event in Sasha City. Such events are held every year, and even Elder Grone's forest has permanently reserved a racetrack for it. Such a grand event is bound to involve gambling. If someone believes the Earth Mother Cult's lies about the Oracle Cave and tries to use the information provided by the Oracle Cave to gamble on the horses, and the Earth Mother Cult intends to take advantage of this to expand its influence, then some unexpected events could very well occur that affect the fairness of the event."
"Don't ask why they only know how to bet on horses when they see an oracle cave that can make important prophecies. If these people are so stupid as to believe that the Earth Mother Cult has a oracle cave, then it is very likely that they will use it to bet on horses."
"So you're going to be a jockey for this horse racing event?!" Donna looked at her uncle with surprise.
"No, I want to be the referee. With my resume, there will be no controversy in getting this position."
Clayton looked down at his massive, powerful physique: "A skilled rider depends not only on the rider but also on the horse. The key to horse racing is the cooperation between rider and horse; one side's excellence alone is not enough to win. Unfortunately, my weight no longer allows me to be a good rider. No horse can carry nearly four hundred pounds and win this kind of race."
"But at least I can still be a referee, which is a way to contribute to my beloved sport and also make a name for myself."
Even so, Donna still felt heartbroken for him.
She remained silent.
Clayton trained in riding for at least twenty years, and it was definitely one of his favorite sports. However, as his body grew stronger, he became less of a good rider, a situation that would frustrate and dishearten anyone.
Clayton shook his head, sensing her thoughts from her expression.
"Don't worry, I lost the mindset of being a good rider a long time ago, and I haven't been able to correct it since."
"Why is that?" Donna asked in confusion. Little Cherry turned her horse's head slightly beneath her, nimbly avoiding a pedestrian.
“A good rider respects his horse; it is both a mount and a close student to the rider. But I have ruined many of the students I liked, and I can’t go back to that mindset.”
At this point, Clayton sighed, his bright yellow eyes gleaming in the night: "Our country's horse breeding is terrible. The royal family doesn't have a dedicated department for it, and private breeding is constantly interrupted for various reasons. As a result, our horses are of very poor quality. During the war, in order to ensure that our cavalry wouldn't be outpaced too much by Taunton's fine horses, we cavalrymen were required to inject our horses with a stimulant before each charge. That stuff was highly toxic, which meant that even if they weren't injured in battle, they would die from the illness after just a few battles."
“Every time I ride my horse to the highway, I think of those horses that were poisoned. After retiring, I couldn’t recapture the joy I had as a rider. I still love riding, but I only enjoy watching others perform.”
"That ride in the fairyland was actually the most enjoyable ride I've had in recent years, but that's because I knew my mount was an ancient horse, and there were no stimulants in the fairyland."
Just as Donna was feeling sad about her uncle's plight, he suddenly changed the subject.
"Miss Asir knows you can use magic, right?"
Donna practically jumped off her horse. She stammered, unable to think of a proper way to exonerate herself. Little Cherry, however, had been ordered to ride alongside Clayton and couldn't retreat to the back. She was left to face Clayton's scrutiny.
Fortunately, it wasn't investigated.
"I'll know when I see Alice."
Clayton gripped the reins, his eyes fixed on the road, and said to himself, "You thought you'd never see her again after leaving Wonderland, so you told her everything about us. Turns out you're in the same school and even in the same dorm. She knows you have magic, so there's nothing to hide from her, but the first step for a secret to cease to be a secret is when a second person finds out."
Donna gave an awkward smile.
"Actually, there's another reason. Everyone at school is very enthusiastic about discussing magic, and I can't just avoid talking about magic whenever it comes up; that would be too strange."
Clayton's chin bobbed up and down, it was hard to tell if he was nodding in approval or if it was just a natural reaction to the bumpy ride.
"That's understandable, girls like divination and magic, but you still need to be careful not to let the teachers believe you really have magic."
"Why is that?" Donna couldn't help but ask.
Clayton turned to her, surprised that she would ask such a question:
"Silly child, you attend a church school."
