Chapter 3: Freaks without tacit understanding
Chapter 3: Freaks without tacit understanding
At the MacReady garage, Tony Leon lifted the hood of a pickup truck and motioned with his finger to his boss in the driver's seat to step on the accelerator so that he could observe the engine operation.
However, Anderson, the owner of the auto repair shop and the number one mechanic, did not step on the accelerator in coordination with him as usual.
Tony raised his head and looked at Anderson in the driver's seat, and asked in confusion: "I thought we could work together to participate in the TV show "Cooperation"."
"Kid, the guy who really has a rapport with you is at the gate." Anderson said to Tony with a smile while biting a sandwich.
Tony turned around and saw his younger brother Tommy Hawke standing at the door of the auto repair shop.
"He is the only freak in the Hawke family who has no tacit understanding." Tony retracted his gaze and said to Anderson while pulling off the gloves on his hands:
"I'll be back soon, Anderson."
"Of course no problem, my good boy, you just have to make sure you fix the car today." Anderson nodded.
"I will." Tony threw his gloves on the engine, turned and walked towards Tommy Hawke, looking at Tommy as he walked, and used harsh words:
"Look, Mr. Tommy Hawke, the future rocket expert, professor, scientist and other high-ranking position holder of America, is here. What can I do for you?"
"I need you to lend me a car." Tommy said straight to the point.
Tony was stunned for a moment, staring at Tommy for a few seconds, then put the cigarette in his mouth: "Wow, I guess you don't need a car to go to school."
"I have to make some money to ensure that I won't be exploited by you and Dad and have to sleep on the street, right?" Tommy took a look and took out a lighter to light it.
Tony clapped his hands and smiled. "Hey, brother, have you finally figured it out? You should have said Goodbye to that shitty high school a long time ago! Want a long-term job? I have a good recommendation. By the way, you should move back here tonight and we'll have a party to celebrate your dropping out of school and let..."
"I didn't drop out of school, I just took a day off. Please lend me a car with gas. If possible, lend me two hundred dollars. It doesn't matter if you don't have it. I can borrow money from Ruby in the Italian community, but first I need a car." Tommy Hawke said to Tony.
Tony looked around, then down at his cigarette: "Boy, are you crazy? You want to go with Ruby and those guys? Two hundred dollars? You know that guy's interest is very high, right?"
"I need some capital. If everything goes well, I might be able to pay the money back before dinner." Tommy shrugged at Tony.
Tony asked seriously, "What business? Tommy, what business?"
"It's a small business, a student's small business." Tommy also spoke seriously.
"I got an advance on my salary from Anderson yesterday because I bailed out my dad. I can't ask him for money anymore, but... the car is fine, and the money is fine. Wait for me." Tony said to Tommy while biting a cigarette, then turned and walked towards Anderson.
The two chatted for a while, and soon Tony got into an orange Chevrolet five-door family sedan in the repair shop and slowly drove to the door. Tony lowered the window and tilted his head towards Tommy:
"Get in the car, man, let's go get the money."
Tommy Hawke got on the passenger seat: "I went to Ruby to borrow money, it's no different from you going there, he knows me."
"But I'm your brother, kid. You can only take the money from me. I'll borrow money from Ruby to avoid him getting in trouble with you." Tony held the steering wheel and looked ahead with focused eyes: "I'm your brother."
Warwick is a small town with a population of 78, of which 12% are Irish, 5% are Italian, 3% are British, 2% are black, and the remaining % is equally divided among other races. With a population of only , it has two major gangs, the Charleston Gang composed of Irish people, and the New England Mafia composed of Italian people.
As for the black gangs that were raging in other cities in the United States? In Rhode Island, blacks looked more like gentlemen than whites.
The poor black people living in Warwick, who make up 3% of the total population, have been educated and taught politely by the white people, who make up 95% of the total population.
Italians mainly gather in the Italian residential area in the southern part of Warwick. Ruby, as Tommy mentioned, is a peripheral member of the New England Mafia.
However, whether it is the Irish gang or the Mafia, they are insignificant to most people in Warwick, and many people may never have any intersection with them in their lives. These gangs have long stopped collecting protection fees and extortion as their main business, and instead operated illegal casinos, smuggling, gambling, opening bars, usury and other businesses.
Ruby is a warm-hearted Italian young man, or at least he looks warm on the surface. He runs a handmade leather goods store. Many Italians would borrow money from him when they are short of money. As long as they repay the loan on time, everything will be fine.
"Ruby." Tony pushed open the door of the leather shop and greeted Ruby, who was wearing a leather apron and making handmade belts.
Ruby looked up at the two brothers Tony and Tommy who came in and said, "Tony, Tommy, long time no see."
"Oh... I got into some trouble, so..." Tony began.
"Come on, Tony, let's get straight to the point. Since we're all Italian, everyone who comes to see me is in trouble. Just tell me how much you need." Ruby looked up and interrupted Tony, then smiled and continued to lower her head, measuring the length of the belt with a ruler.
Tony exhaled, "Two hundred bucks. I need two hundred bucks."
"OK." Ruby put down the ruler in her hand, turned and walked to the safe in the corner, took out ten twenty-denomination bills from it, then locked the safe, walked back and handed them to Tony.
Tony reached out to take it, but Ruby didn't let go. Instead, she looked at Tony with a smile: "Tony, how long do you want to borrow it for?"
"Tonight... before your leather store closes?" Tony looked at Tommy uncertainly, then said.
"You need to pay me back two hundred and twenty dollars. I don't like customers to borrow money short-term, so the interest rate will be higher." Ruby looked at Tony: "Deal?"
"Deal." Tony nodded, and Ruby let go of her hand, letting Tony take the two hundred dollars.
After getting the money, the two walked out of the store. Ruby continued to lower her head to measure the belt. While busy, she said, "I have to go home for dinner at seven o'clock in the evening. So, if you don't see me here and plan to send the money you owe to my house, you need to pay two hundred and forty-two dollars."
When they walked out of the leather shop, Tony handed the money to Tommy Hawke, who put it in his pocket: "I will pay it back before tonight."
"Well, now you can go and do your student's little business." Tony took out a cigarette, lit it, took a puff, and smiled at Tommy.
